PRETTY EDWARDIAN YOUNG WOMAN AND HER WHIMSICAL HAT

This vintage real photo postcard features a beautiful young woman and her whimsical hat. She is looking over her shoulder and looking coyly at the photographer. The postcard was published by Paul Finkenrath, the Berlin postcard publishing and printing business. It is part of a series. (no. 1018). The Paul Finkenroth company made quality photo postcards and the company was heavily oriented toward export. They were known to be responsive to printing postcards that they’re customers desired over time. They were quite profitable but closed in 1911 when protective tariffs interfered with their business. The company was established by Paul Finkenrath and Paul Grasnick in 1897. The partnership lasted about a year and then Grasnick left to start his own lithography studio. The postmark on this postcard indicates that it was stamped in Kortrijk, a Belgian city in the Flemish province of West Flanders. It was postmarked in 1916 and has a Belgian stamp.

BEAUTIFUL FRENCH PERFORMER: BLEUETTE D’ARTOIS

This vintage real photo postcard features pretty French performer Bleuette D’Artois. She is beautifully dressed. In fact, she appeared in a postcard series called “Queens of Fashion”. The postcard was published by E.L.D. (E. Le Delay), a company located in Paris, France. The postcard is part of a series (no. 4264). The postmark is dated 1918 and the postcard was postmarked in Merbes-le-Château, Belgium. The postcard has a Belgian stamp.

BELGIAN STAGE AND FILM ACTRESS: JANE MARNAC

This vintage real photo postcard features pretty Belgian stage and film actress, Jane Marnac (1892-1976). She appeared in dozens of parts on stage and sang in numerous operettas. She is well known for appearing in “Au temps des valses ” (1930), a play by Noel Coward that played at the Apollo Theater. She is also remembered for her role in “The Darling of Paris” (1931). Wikipedia provides a list of twenty of her play appearances (1912-1938) and notes that it is an incomplete list.  Wikipedia also lists six films (1911-1931) in which Marnac made appearances.  In regard to her personal life, she was born in Brussels, Belgium. She married an English officer in 1927. This postcard was published by K.F. (Kunzli Freres) of Paris, France and is part of a series (no. 2315). The company was one of the largest pioneer postcard publishing houses. The company was established in 1874. It had offices in Zurich and Paris. Beginning 1898, it became known for publishing postcard maps throughout Europe. The photographer who took Miss Marnac’s portrait seen on this postcard, was Leopold Reutlinger.

LITTLE GIRL WITH CYMBALS AND LOTS OF PERSONALITY (POSTCARD FROM ANTWERP, BELGIUM)

This vintage postcard features an adorable little girl playing the cymbals. She is wearing a flower wreath in her hair and a wonderful smile. The postcard was published by NPG (“Neue Photographische Gesellschaft”) and is part of a series (no. O 1448). The postcard has a Belgian stamp that was postmarked in 1909.  The postcard is addressed to someone living in Anvers (Antwerp), which is a Flemish city in Belgium.

PORTRAIT OF A BELGIAN SOLDIER IN LEOPOLDSBURG, BELGIUM

This vintage real photo postcard features a uniformed Belgian soldier. He is holding a pair of white gloves and a riding crop. Note the soldiers shiny boots and the overcoat which he has draped over his shoulders. Note that soldier is wearing spurs. He is a cavalry officer. Printing on the reverse of the postcard indicates that the photographer was the LUX studio in Leopoldsburg, Belgium. LUX was also the name of a French postcard publisher and the spelling of Leopoldsburg printed on the card is in French. Therefore, I am unsure which explanation concerning LUX is true. What I do know is that the town of Leopoldsburg is located in the Belgian Province of Limburg. This postcard dates to the 1920’s. Hopefully, a visitor to the Cabinet Card Gallery will be able to translate the message on the postcard and leave a comment informing other visitors to the blog.   SOLD

SWEET PHOTOGRAPH OF A LITTLE BOY RIDING A ST. BERNARD (VINTAGE REAL PHOTO POSTCARD)

This vintage real photo postcard features a sweet little boy dressed in winter clothing riding a large St. Bernard dog. Of course the dog is a stuffed toy but it sure looks realistic. In fact, the dog may actually be a stuffed “real” dog. This winter scene photograph is a rare find. The image was produced by a private studio. There are two photographer stamps on the reverse of the postcard. One stamp is from “Le Bon Photographe” (The Good Photographer?) which was located in Ostende, Belgium. Ostende is a coastal city in West Flanders. The second stamp states “Studio Universele” which was located in Brussels.   SOLD

PORTRAIT OF A TEENAGE BROTHER AND SISTER IN GAND, BELGIUM

This cabinet card portrait features what appears to be teenage siblings. They are posing at the studio of Nestor Schaffers in Gand (Ghent), Belgium. The sister is well dressed. Note her lace sleeves, collar, and bib. The brother is wearing a double breasted jacket and a bow tie. He has adopted a Napoleon type pose by placing his hand under his jacket. The sister has her hand affectionately on her brother’s shoulder. The cabinet card has a distinctive red border.

ATTRACTIVE AND FASHIONABLE COUPLE IN ANVERS (ANTWERP), BELGIUM

A very attractive and fashionable couple pose for their portrait at the Henry studio in Anvers, Belgium. The gentleman appears to be holding gloves. His top hat is visible on the table behind him.  The lovely lady is wearing a beautiful dress and a fancy hat. She is also wearing white gloves and holding a bouquet of flowers. This image may be a wedding photograph. The backstamp of the cabinet card indicates that the photographer, Henry, was the winner of a photography medal at the World Exposition in 1894.  Anvers, the home of Henry’s studio, was a port and financial center in northern Belgium. The city is located on the Scheldt river and was a center for the diamond industry.  Anvers was also the home of the first stock exchange (1460).  Anvers is the french name for Antwerp.
