This cabinet card portrait features a pretty young woman posing for her portrait at the Yvan Crewell studio, in Antwerp, Belgium. The woman is wearing a pretty checkered dress. Her belt and collar are wonderful accents. She is wearing gloves and holding a bouquet of flowers. Writing on the reverse of the photograph indicates that the photo was taken in 1895. I wonder what material that dress is made of, and whether the check has a name. More intriguing is the feeling that I’ve actually seen something–likely a dress–made of that kind of cloth. In my mind, the checks were red and white, and the cloth was a blend of cotton and wool.
