This carte de visite photograph features actress, Miss Elizabeth Weathersby (1849-1887). She was born in London. Weathersby began as a burlesque performer at a young age. She came to the United States in 1869 as a member of a touring troupe. When the tour ran into financial problems, Weathersby was signed by Lydia Thompson to become a member of the “British Blondes”. The Blondes were extremely popular in New York that season. They were a burlesque troupe and their theatrical repetoire included comedy, pantomime, satire, improvisation, and song and dance. The show was saucy. The acts included cross-dressing, risque costumes and off color jokes. The company’s six month tour was extended to nearly six years. They returned to the US two more times to play to large audiences. The burlesque troup stirred up lots of protest and controversy, spawning an anti burlesque movement. This form of entertainment was considered disgraceful, indecent, and unnatural. Eliza was a popular member of the troupe. Weathersby married socialite, actor, comedian Nathaniel Goodwin and they formed their own burlesque company that was active between the late 1870’s until Eliza became ill in 1884. She died three years later in New York City. Her death was the result of a flawed gynelogical surgery. During her career, Weathersby appeared in 7 Broadway plays between 1870 and 1873. He operated a studio in Hoboken, New Jersey. At some point in his career he partnered in a photo studio named “Nagel & Fritz”. Nagel worked as a photographer from at least 1869 through 1887. (SOLD)
This carte de visite photograph features a handsome man with a full wirey beard. He has piercing eyes. Writing on the reverse of the cdv identifies the gentleman as “Timothy Borden (Barden?). The photographer of this photograph is Charles Bohm of Denver, Colorado. His studio was located at 284 Fifteenth Street. He is cited in a number of sources as the former employer of Frank Albert Rinehart (1861-1928) who became a famous American artist for his photography capturing Native American personalities and scenes. To view the work of Alfred Edward Rinehart, Frank’s brother, click on the category “Photographer: Rinehart”. Charles Bohm was an engraver, a jeweler and a real estate developer. He was born in Germany in 1846 and his family came to the United States to escape the democratic revolution of 1848. For many years the Bohm family lived in New Jersey where he became an apprentice in a design and engraving business. After a two year trip to Denver, he returned to New York where he designed copper plates, illustrated magazines, and organized the Palette Art Club. In 1872 he moved back to Denver and established a business offering design, engraving and photographic portraiture. He was active in Denver society and was a trustee for the water company and the library. Apparently, he loved speed and was involved in racing cars, horses and sleds. SOLD
This carte de visite portrait features Civil War Union Cavalry Major General, Hugh Judson Kilpatrick (1836-1881). He was a 1861 graduate of West Point and quickly rose in the ranks as the war progressed. As a General, he was considered to be reckless with the lives of his soldiers. He developed a disparaging nickname of “Kilcavalry” or “Kill-Cavalry” for his disregard of the lives of his men. After the war, he became the United States Minister to Chile. This cdv is on thinner than usual card stock. The photo has a bumped top right hand corner and is in overall fair condition. SOLD

His best known work was a series of novels known as the “Chronicles of Barsetshire”. He also wrote novels revolving around political, social and gender issues. This cdv’s photograph of Trollope was taken by Napoleon Sarony. Sarony was a celebrated and talented celebrity photographer based in New York City. (SOLD)

This carte de visite portrait features a sweet looking baby sitting in a wheelbarow. This wide-eyed child has a beautiful smile. The photographer of this cdv image was Lucien Pouget (1876-1915). He began his career as a luthier (maker of stringed instruments). Pouget worked as a photographer for about 15 years. His studio was on avenue de la Gare in La Chatre, France. In World War I, he became a Private in the 276th Infanry Regiment. His time in the service lasted only seven months. He was killed in the war in 1915. His wife, Marie Pouget succeeded her husband in his photography business. The business was still operating in 1936. This cdv has some edgewear and remnant of tape on the top of the reverse of the image. It is in overall good condition (see scans).
