TWO ENGLISH BOYS AND THEIR YORKSHIRE TERRIER

twokidsanddog

W. H. De Lan took on the challenge of photographing the two boys and their dog featured in this cabinet card portrait. Dogs tend to have difficulty comprehending photographer’s instructions so producing a good photograph of a dog is quite a respectable feat. The compliant dog in this photograph appears to be a Yorkshire Terrier. The boys in this image are well dressed and the seated child has a pocket watch. Research yielded little information about W. H. De Lan. One source stated that he operated his studio in Bridge End which is a village in Northumberland, England. A second source reported that he was a photographer in Bradford, a borough of West Yorkshire.

TWO SIBLINGS AND THEIR PET DOG POSE FOR A PORTRAIT IN EAU CLAIRE, WISCONSIN

kidsdogf_0008

Two young children and their pet dog pose for their portrait at the Bonell studio in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Big brother and little sister look intently at the camera as does their canine friend. In fact, the dog must have been well trained to sit on a stool for a long enough time to be photographed. The children are well dressed. It is unusual to see a boy as young as the subject in this photograph wearing a suit and accessorizing with a pocket watch. The kids in this image are cute but the dog steals the show. The photographer of this image is Frederick Bonell. In addition to having a studio in Eau Claire, he also conducted business in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. At the time of this photograph his Eau Claire studio was located on the corner of Barstow & Gibson Streets. One source states that Bonell worked as a photographer between 1879 and 1890. TWO COUPLES AND A SMALL DOG IN WAASASSA, FINLAND

WASA FAMILY_0011

Signe Liljequist photographed these two couples and a small dog in his studio in Waasassa, Finland. It is very possible that the older pair are the parents of the two younger adults. The younger and older man share what appears to be a family resemblance. The four subjects in this photograph are nicely dressed and the younger man has an admirable mustache. To view other great mustaches, click on the category “Mustaches (Only the Best)”. The town of Waasassa has held a number of other names over history. Presently, the town is called Vaasa. TWO YOUNG BOYS LOOKING VERY GQ POSE WITH THEIR DOGS IN CEDAR FALLS, IOWA

BOYS TO MEN_0003This old photograph has seen better days but what a terrific image. The photographer, Clay from Cedar Falls, Iowa, took on a great challenge. It is difficult enough to photograph one dog, but Clay had to photograph two dogs and two young boys. Clay was up for the task and the resulting photograph is a visual treat. The boys in this image are dressed like young men. They are wearing jackets and ties Be sure to note their shoes and their hats. Accompanying the boys are two dogs. One canine looks like an airedale while the other resembles a border collie. Amazingly, both the boys and the dogs are looking directly at the camera.

A WOMAN AND HER LABRADOR RETRIEVER IN HONESDALE, PENNSYLVANIA

lady and a labJ A Bodie of Honesdale, Pennsylvania photographed this lady and her lab at the Bodie Art Studio located on the Keystone Block. The woman is holding a wonderful large hat featuring what appears to be long feathers. The lady and her canine companion are posed atop bales of hay. The dog is likely a labrador retriever and he or she has very expressive eyes that seem sad and lonely and begging for attention. The photographer of this cabinet card is either Joseph Alonzo Bodie (1852-1935) or his son, Joseph A. Bodie Jr.. Junior followed his father into the family business. The senior Bodie learned photography from E. I. Stearns and in 1875, Bodie bought half interest in Stearns’s studio. By 1878, Bodie became the sole proprietor of the studio. The Bulletin of Photography (1912) reported that Bodie’s studio was totally destroyed by fire and the loss was valued at $2500.00 and was only partially covered by insurance. In a later issue, the same journal stated that Bodie had rebuilt the studio.

burmesedog_0005

A long haired and very well dressed young lad poses with his dog at the Rockwood studio in New York. The boy is wearing interesting leggings and a terrific hat. His dog appears to be a Burmese Mountain Dog but that is simply an uninformed guess. There is an unusual notation below the image; “Printed on N. P. S. extra brilliant albumen paper”. The photographer, George Rockwood of  New York City was a noted celebrity photographer. It is possible that the boy featured in this image may have been a child actor.
