PORTRAIT OF A LITTLE GIRL WEARING A BONNET : HOLDING A DOLL OR PUPPET (1939)

This vintage real photo postcard features an adorable little girl holding a doll. It is possible that the doll may actually be a marionette puppet. Note the child’s bonnet as well as her apprehensive expression. A stamp on the reverse of the card reveals that the child was photographed by the Jupiter studio in Bucharest, Romania. The photo was taken in 1939. This vintage postcard has excellent clarity and is in excellent condition.

A LITTLE GIRL AND HER WOODEN DOLL IN PARIS, FRANCE

This vintage photograph features and adorable little girl sitting on a wall and holding her doll for all to see. I know very little about dolls, but, this one seems to be made out of wood. This photo was taken at a studio in Paris, France. The photographer was E. Chapuis. Preliminary research yielded no biographical information about Mr. Chapuis but he appears to have been a prolific photographer based on the number of his photos that are in the hands of collectors. This photograph measures about 2 1/4″ x 3 7/8″.  SOLD

PORTRAIT OF AN ADORABLE LITTLE GIRL AND HER KEWPIE DOLL (1926-1940’s)

clluloid flapper This vintage real photo postcard features an adorable little girl, seated on a bench, and holding a little doll. The doll appears to be a kewpie doll. Kewpie is a brand of doll which was modeled after a comic strip character created by cartoonist Rose O’Neill in 1909. The doll had a similar appearance to cupid. In 1912 the first kewpie doll appeared and it was a bisque doll. Later, the dolls were made of composition (1920’s), celluloid (1930’s and 1940’s), and later plastic kewpies made their appearance. A person knowledgable about dolls, told me that the doll seen in this photograph is made of celluloid. The AZO stamp box on the reverse of this postcard indicates that the photograph was taken sometime between 1926 and the 1940’s. This photo postcard is in excellent condition (see scans).   (SOLD)

ADORABLE GOLDEN HAIRED LITTLE GIRL GIVES HER DOLLS A BATH (REAL PHOTO POSTCARD)

This vintage real photo postcard falls under the category of  “incredibly cute”. The photograph shows an adorable curly and golden haired little girl giving her porcelain doll a bath in a wooden barrel tub. Two additional dolls are seated in a chair beside her awaiting their turn in the tub. Behind the little girl is a clothes line from which the doll’s clothes are hanging to dry. Scattered around are some unused clothes line pins and under the small table holding the tub, one can find the doll’s shoes. The scene is terrifically posed. The postcard is of French origin and published by Fauvette (#1302). The postcard is postmarked in 1913.   (SOLD)

A CUTE LITTLE GIRL AND HER BIG DOLL IN UTICA, NEW YORK

A precious baby girl, sitting on a chair, poses next to her large doll. The cute little girl has the most darling expression as she looks at the camera. She is wearing a necklace and a hair band. This cabinet card photograph was taken at the Scofield studio in Utica, New York. Charles H. Scofield (1845-1918) was active as a photographer in Utica between 1874 and 1879. A stereoview portrait by Scofield is part of the collection at the J. Paul Getty Museum, in Los Angeles, California. Scofield held a photography patent for an “adjustable camera and box”, according to the Anthony Photographic Bulletin (1886). The 1880 US census reveals that he was married to Fanny Scofield. A photographer named Charles Albert Scofield operated in Utica. He is listed in the 1894 Utica business directory, as well as, other editions. He was the son of Charles H. Scofield. This cabinet card photograph is in good condition. Note that there is slight fading, as well as some spots in the lower portion of the image (see scans).

ADORABLE LITTLE GIRL WEARING A FUR COAT AND HOLDING A DOLL

This vintage real photo postcard features an adorable wide-eyed little girl dressed in winter clothing. She is wearing a fur coat and a winter hat. The girl is holding a doll. This photograph was taken by Ferdinand Ertl and the postcard was published by Bradux (c.1930’s). The card is part of a series (86539). Ertl’s studio was located in the Tamsweg-Lungau region of Austria.   SOLD

This real photo postcard features an adorable brother and sister. The siblings are holding hands as they pose for this studio photograph. The boy looks handsome in his sailor outfit and the little girl appears precious as she holds her doll against her body. This postcard is of French origin and dates back to the 1920’s.   (SOLD)

PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG CHILD AND HER CHINA HEAD DOLL IN GIRARD, ILLINOIS

This cabinet card portrait features an adorable little girl with a terrific smile. She is holding her china head doll. The close-up view of the child makes this image quite special. The photographer of this photograph was Fred Jorns who operated a studio in Girard, Illinois. Frederick W. Jorns (1857-1943) was once partnered with William L Harrod in operating a studio in Girard. In addition they operated the Jorns and Harrod Palace Art Car. This was a mobile studio that travelled the rails stopping in towns in Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky. The studio car was pulled by an engine from the Cincinnati-Chicago and St. Louis Railroad. An 1892 photo of the studio rail car can be seen below. Fred is the gentleman wearing the suit. Jorn’s father, Gustav Jorns, immigrated from Germany in 1848. He married in 1856 and learned the photography business from his brother-in-law. Gustav established a photo studio in Springfield, Illinois. Gustav’s son, Fred learned the photography business from his father and set up his own studio in Girard. Fred married Lena Hann in 1884 and a portrait of the couple can be seen below.The couple travelled together on the Palace Art Car leaving their three children with relatives. Jorns sold his photography business around 1901 and became a grocer. He later resided in the Oklahoma Territory and then Houston, Texas. Please note the cabinet card portrait below which captures Fred Jorns reclining on a chaise. Initial research was unsuccessful in determining whether Fred Jorns operated his studio alone before he partnered with William Harrod or visa versa.

PORTRAIT OF A CHARMING LITTLE GIRL AND HER DOLL

This vintage hand-colored real photo postcard features a charming little girl holding her doll. The child has a wonderful smile. She is wearing a fancy white lace dress, a necklace, and a hair bow. The postcard was published in 1904 by Neue Photographische Gesellschaft (NPG) which was located in Berlin and Stuttgart, Germany.The company was in business between 1894 and 1948. It was founded by Arthur Black (1862-1943) and it became one of the most well known and largest companies involved in the production of postcards.The postcard is an Oranotypie. An oranotype is a trade name for a type of glossy real photo postcard published by NPG at the beginning of the 20th century.The postcard was mailed to someone in Paris, France and is postmarked in either 1906 or 1908 (it is difficult to decipher which date).  (SOLD)

PORTRAIT OF A LITTLE GIRL AND HER THREE BISQUE DOLLS IN BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS

This cabinet card portrait features a sweet little girl posing as she sits of an animal skin rug with her three bisque dolls. Interestingly, the dolls have similar faces but are three different sizes. The little girl has ribbons in her curly hair and flashes a wry grin at the camera. The child’s first name appears to be “Carol” as that is the name written on the cabinet card below the image. The photograph was taken by the Cunningham Studio in Boston, Massachusetts. Edward L. Cunningham appears in the 1900 US census. The data indicates that he was born in 1864 in the state of Maine. He married Ella B. Cunningham in 1885. The couple had at least one child, Edward L Cunningham born in 1889. At the time of the census the Cunningham family was living in Boston and Edward Sr. was working as a photographer. A number of business directories from the Boston area list the Cunningham studio. The directories were issued between 1883 and 1905. This cabinet card portrait is especially nice as it offers a close up view of both little Carol, and her collection of dolls.
