DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILY SITS ON THE FRONT STEPS OF A HOUSE IN LAKE PLACID, NEW YORK (1887)

stoop

A family therapist might find it interesting to analyze this portrait of three women and a man sitting on the front porch of a house in Lake Placid, New York. The therapist might note that three of the subjects are looking off in one direction while the young woman (sitting the closest to the bottom) is staring in the opposite direction. What is going on with this young lady? Not only is she oppositional but she is displaying horrible posture (slouching), and a “bored out of her mind” expression. The gentleman in this image is also exhibiting an interesting expression. He looks like the cat that ate the canary as he flashes a mischievous grin. He is holding a book/magazine. Perhaps the reading material is humorous. The four individuals in this photograph seem totally disconnected from each other. If the four subjects comprise a family, than they seem to be lacking warmth and a sense of being a cohesive unit. This photograph has an inscription on the reverse side. The inscription states “The Westside, Lake Placid, 1887”. The name of the photographer can be found embossed on the lower left hand corner of the image. His name is listed as “H. T. Hull, Amateur”. The word amateur appears so that viewers of the image would know that the photograph was not taken by a professional photographer. When photography became available to non professionals, there would be competitions held for amateurs so they could have places to exhibit their best photographs. This photograph measures 8 1/4″ x 6 1/4″.

A FATHER AND HIS YOUNG SON: FIRST AND SECOND VIOLIN IN NORTH ADAMS, MASSACHUSETTS

music family

This cabinet card features a father and son posing for their portrait at a photography studio in North Adams, Massachusetts. Both father and son are standing by their violins. Sheet music rests on a music stand. Hopefully the boy has memorized his part because there is no way he is going to be able to read the music due to it being elevated so far above his head. Dad seems to be rather self absorbed as he poses for the camera. It is as if he is oblivious to the presence of his son. It is interesting that the photographer chose to photograph the musical pair in a faux outdoor setting. Placing the subjects in a faux parlor or music room seems more appropriate. Nevertheless, this is a terrific photograph. I have been unable to decipher the photographers name and would appreciate any assistance in the effort from any cabinet card gallery visitor. Visitors have played an important role in providing research and background information throughout the gallery’s history and their efforts are greatly appreciated.  SOLD

ITALIAN CABINET CARD FEATURING A MOTHER AND HER YOUNG DAUGHTER

ITALIAN CAB_0001

This cabinet card portrait is an immigrant to the Cabinet Card Gallery from somewhere in Italy. The image features a young mother with her arm affectionately around the shoulders of her adorable daughter. Mom is holding a fan and the daughter is holding a small purse. Both the mother and daughter share intense expressions though the daughter is also displaying a wide-eyed questioning look at the photographer. Neither the subjects in this image or the photographer are identified on this well posed cabinet card.

TENDER PORTRAIT OF A MOTHER AND DAUGHTER IN LEAVENWORTH, KANSAS

LEAVENWORTH_0006

The love between a mother and her daughter is quite evident in this cabinet card portrait by the Bauer studio  in Leavenworth, Kansas. Note the intimate quality of this image. The little girl displays a loving look and has her right arm draped over her mother’s right shoulder and has her left hand touching her mothers’ upper arm. The reverse of the cabinet card has printing advertising the address of P. H. Bauer’s studio. The building was located on the northwest corner of Shawnee and Fifth Streets.  P. H Bauer’s father, Sebastian Bauer was a pioneer Kansas photographer. He was active in Leavenworth between 1865 and 1887. His son, Pius Henry Bauer (1861-?) started sharing his fathers studio in 1878 and they soon joined as partners. He opened his own gallery in 1887 which he ran past 1900. In 1886 and 1887, a Mary Bauer worked in the gallery. She was reported by one source to be Pius’s sister and by another source to be Pius’s wife.

FAMILY PORTRAIT OF PARENTS AND THEIR FOUR CHILDREN TAKEN IN AN ALLEY SOMEWHERE IN SPAIN

SPANISH FAMILY_0003

This cabinet card portrait immigrated to the Cabinet Card Gallery from Spain and the photograph was likely taken there. The image features a set of parents and their four daughters. The youngest child is sitting in a wood wagon and is accompanied by a doll. It is not clear in what setting this photograph was taken. Is the family inside a studio, or are they actually being photographed in an alley? I’m guessing that they are in a studio and the photographer has created an outside scene within his studio. Be sure to note the family members great hats.

PARENTS AND THEIR FIVE CHILDREN IN SAN PAULO, BRAZIL

FAMILY PORTRAIT_0005This family portrait features a mother and father along with their five children. Mom and one of her daughters are holding umbrellas while dad balances a book on his knee. The eldest son is wearing a sailor suit and has his arm wrapped around his little brother who is sitting on a tricycle. Another brother stands alone on the opposite side of the wall than where the rest of his family is located. Does this have some psychological meaning, or is this just where he was posed by the photographer. The photographer is the Perez studio which was located in San Paulo, Brazil.
