This cabinet card captures two precious little girls riding a toy horse drawn wagon to market. Note the terrific detail of both the toy horse, and the backdrop. The horse appears to be covered with fabric and has leather saddle bags and a tail made from hair. The printed German title below the photograph, “Ruckkehr vom Markt.”, translates to “smooth traffic from the market”. The card is dated 1884 and was photographed in Germany. The publisher of this photograph was E. Linde, who was located in Berlin, Germany.

A FAMILY OF FIVE POSES ON THE ISLAND OF FOHR (INDOOR FISHERMEN)
A couple and their three children arrive in Wyk auf Fohr, the only town on the island of Fohr. Fohr is the second largest of the North Frisian Islands on the German coast of the North Sea. The family is on the island to vacation. They decide to walk around the town and happened upon a photographer’s studio. The photographers name was Wilhelm Muller. The family decides to go into the studio for a portrait, believing that a photograph of them would make a great souvenir of their trip to the seashore. The photographer had a wonderful beach backdrop, as well as props, including fishing nets and an oar. The resulting photograph makes the family look like they are ready for a day of serious fishing. For some unknown reason, it was decided that mom should pose with an open book on her lap. Is she bored, or is she studying a text on fishing? The family likely had fun on their vacation because the area they were visiting, was a noted resort town. Here is a historical tidbit. From 1842 to 1847, Danish King Christian VIII chose Wyk as his summer vacation spot, which attracted even more tourists. In 1844, Hans Christian Andersen followed the King to Wyk and made the following comment about Wyk’s beach: “I bathed every day and I must say it was the most remarkable water I have ever been in”.
STYLISH FAMILY IN MINDEN, GERMANY (1905)
A stylish and well dressed family pose for their portrait at the studio of J. Loerb in Porta Westfalica, Minden, Germany. It seems that someone forgot to tell the woman on the right that she was supposed to wear a light colored dress. Oops! Writing on the reverse of the image indicates that this photograph was taken in 1905.
WOODSMAN IN CLAUSTHAL, GERMANY
This occupational cabinet card features what appears to be a Woodsman and his axe. He is holding a metal tool in his left hand. Hopefully, a visitor to this site can identify the name and purpose of this particular tool. The mysterious object actually looks like an animal trap. Note the ladder in the background and the cut wood in front of him. He appears to be sitting on an overturned wheelbarrow. The photographer of this image is Friedrich Zirkler, of Clausthal, Germany. Clausthal is a town in Lower Saxony in the Harz Mountains. The area was known for its mining activity at the time of the photograph.
THREE ADULTS IN A BIZARRE POSE IN MITTWEIDA, GERMANY
This cabinet card captures three fashionable adults engaging in nonsensical behavior. It is difficult to assess what is happening in this photograph. Perhaps the threesome are actors in a play. The woman on the left appears to be wearing two purses, both have long leather straps. The woman on the right also seems to have a long leather strap hanging from her shoulders. What is the purpose of these leather straps? Hopefully, a visitor to this site will have the answer, or at least, a hypothesis. The photographer of this photograph was Richard Brand of Mittweida, Germany. It appears that Mr. Brand could have taken a better picture if he positioned himself closer to the subjects. Such a photographic strategy would have eliminated his photographing the edge of the floor mat in this photograph. This photograph was certainly not an image that Richard Brand could proudly exhibit. Four adorable siblings pose for their studio portrait in Zweibrucken, Germany. The three sisters and their young brother/sister are pictured with some toys. Note the ball and a book. The oldest girl is holding the youngest child. Three of the children have bows in their hair. The photographer is E. Marr. Marr is mentioned in the American Journal of Photography (1890).
TWO FASHIONABLE AND ADORABLE CHILDREN IN DRESDEN, GERMANY
This image presents two adorable and extremely well dressed children posing for their portrait at the studio of L. Markus, in Dresden, Germany. They are dressed in the finest fashion for cool weather. Their mother appears to have had a great sense for what was fashionable in children’s clothing. The young lad’s outfit shows a nautical influence.

This cabinet card photograph of a very fit and athletic looking young man. He was obviously a turn-of-the-century gym rat. He appears to be a wrestler, or perhaps a gymnast. He is wearing a medal received for some athletic accomplishment. The photographer was Georg Brems of Bremen, Germany.
THE FEUERBACH BOOK CLUB MEETS IN GERMANY (CIRCA 1900)
This photograph captures two couples gathered around a table. There are books on the table and one gentleman is holding a kindle. Ok, so its not a kindle, but you must admit it looks like a kindle. When photographer Julius Berthold took this photograph, Amazon was just a river; not a corporation. Berthold’s studio was located in Feuerbach, Germany. Feuerbach is a district of the city of Stuttgart.
