This vintage real photo postcard features German film actress, dancer, and screenwriter Maria Solveg (1907-1993). She was also known as “Maria Matray”. Solveg was a star of the late Weimar film era. She married her mentor, director and choreographer, Ernst Matray. When Hitler rose to power, Solveg, who was Jewish, fled the country. She came to the United States in 1936 and launched a career as a choreographer and writer. She worked in Hollywood as a choreographer or assistant director during the 1940’s. Her well known movies included “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” (1939), “Pride and Prejudice” (1940), and “Dr Jekyl and Mr Hyde” (1941). In the 1950’s she wrote scripts for television. She became a German citizen again in 1960. The IMDb gives Solveg 52 credits for writing and 22 acting credits. This postcard was published by Ross Verlag as part of a series (no.2078/1). (SOLD)
This portrait photograph is a 1983 press photo featuring celebrated German cartoonist, Loriot (1923-2011), sitting at his work desk. He was also known as Vicco von Bulow. Born in Prussia to an aristocratic family, his artistic talent was evident during his early school years. During World War II he was a military officer on the eastern front. In addition to being a talented cartoonist; he was a comedian, humorist, film director, actor, and writer. He is most associated with his cartoons, but he also had a television series and two movies. He loved classical music and opera and once humorously conducted the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Loriot won many awards during his career for his creative talent. SOLD
This original carte de visite portrait features a well dressed pretty young woman She was photographed at the studio of renowned photographer, Karl Lutzel. His studio was located in Munich, Germany. There is an inscription on the reverse of the cdv. I had difficulty obtaining a complete translation. I believe that the inscription states that the woman in the photograph is the wife of Bernhard Fischer. It is also my theory that “Schraidy?” was her maiden name. I would appreciate any help with the translation. (SOLD)

This vintage real photo postcard features German born film actress, singer, and nurse, Leila Negra (1930-). She looks adorable posing with her teddy bear. She spent the beginning of her career as a child film actress in the 1940’s, became a singer post World War II, and in the late 1950’s, she became a nurse. Her father was a British sailor who emigrated there from Ghana. He was not involved raising Leila. Her mom was the daughter of a white German woman and a Creole man from Martinique. Due to her mothers family not accepting the birth of Leila, her mother placed Leila in an orphanage where she remained for the first three years of her life. Her mother took her from the orphanage and moved to Hamburg to be near Leila’s grandmother. Leila’s mom worked as a musician. When Leila was ten years old, her mother died from a botched abortion. Leila’s parenting was taken over by her grandmother. Growing up, Leila was exposed to horrible racism. The Nazis ended her education and placed her into forced labor in a factory. Her film career was initiated by Joseph Goebbels, Germany’s Minister of Propaganda. He was recruiting black children to play African natives in government UFA films. Her film debut was in “Munchhausen” (1943). The IMDb credits her with six film appearances. In 1957, she began training as a nurse. Nursing became her second career. The sixth image (postcard 4) is a vintage real photo postcard portrait of Ethel Barrymore. The postcard was published by Albert Hahn who was based in New York City (200 Broadway) and Hamburg. Hahn operated his company between 1901 and 1919. The postcard was produced in Germany sometime in the decade of 1900-1910. The postcard is part of a series (no. 5271). (SOLD)
Postcard 5 offers a profile view of Miss Barrymore. The postcard was published by the Rotograph Company as part of the Rotograph Series (No. A 112). The photographer of this image is Burr McIntosh of New York City. William Burr McIntosh (1862-1942) lived an interesting life. Among his job titles listed by Wikipedia, are photographer, lecturer, film studio owner, silent film actor, publisher of the “Burr McIntosh Monthly”, reporter, and radio and early film pioneer. His sister was Nancy McIntosh, a noted operatic soprano. He was a graduate of Lafayette College in 1884. His most noted film role was his appearance in D. W. Griffith’s film, “Way Down East” (1920). Wikipedia notes that he appeared in 53 films between 1914 and 1934. This vintage postcard is in very good condition.
