This risque vintage real photo postcard (Postcard 1) features actress Anny Ondra. The postcard was published by Iris Verlag. The photograph is by Verleih Norbert & Co.. The postcard is part of a series (no. 5446). The photo seen on this postcard captures Ondra in a scene from the movie “Blackmail” (1929). This particular postcard is rare. I have searched extensively and have not been able to locate this particular image elsewhere. Anny Ondra (1903-1987) was a Czech film actress. She was born in Tarnow, Galicia, Austria-Hungary (now Poland). She was active in the movie industry between 1914 and 1957. She acted in Czech, Austrian, and German films in the 1920’s. She appeared in some British dramas, most notably, Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Manxman” (1929) and “Blackmail” (1929). The IMDb credits Ondra with over 90 acting credits between 1914 and 1957. She appeared in more than 40 films in the sound era. However, her career in British films was hurt by her thick accent. Check out the youtube video below. In this “test film”, Hitchcock “interviews” Ondra and makes her visibly uncomfortable and embarrassed by asking her very personal questions. She was married to German boxing champion Max Schmeling between 1933 and 1987. Schmeling was the world champion between 1930 and 1932. He is well known for his fights with African American fighter, Joe Lewis. Ondra’s father was a Czech, Austro-Hungarian military officer and she grew up in Tarnow, Pula, and Prague. At the early age of seventeen, she acted in the theater as well as in a film. When her family learned that she had acted in a film, they were extremely angry. In fact, she reported that she was given a beating by her father. Post World War I was a time, for many people, that being an actress was akin to being a prostitute. Ondra began to live with her boyfriend (her debut film’s director) but after some time, the relationship ended because she wanted a family and he wanted nothing to do with marriage. In 1933, after a three year romance, Anny married Max Schmeling. She had been in a film with the boxer (“Knock-Out”, 1935). It was a “happy” marriage and the couple remained together until her death in 1987. Ondra and Schmeling were hot names in Nazi Germany. German fascists tried to exploit them in order to popularize their movement. Schmeling was seen as a German superman while Ondra represented the blonde Aryan type. The two celebrities refused to collaborate. Schmeling turned down honors and even helped hide two Jewish children, saving their lives. However, because of Nazi propoganda, many believed that the couple had collaborated. As a result, Schmeling and Ondra suffered financially for their fictional cooperation with the Nazis. Ondra was portrayed in two modern day movies, “Ring of Passion” (1978) and Joe and Max (2002). (SOLD)

Postcard 4 is an uncommon vintage real photo postcard is of Dutch origin and was published by Remaco. The photograph shows Anny working in a tailor shop. She is pressing a shirt and smiling while she works. This photo likely captures a scene from one of Ondra’s films. Note the other woman in the photo busy at work on their tailoring tasks. This vintage real photo postcard features a pretty young woman looking intently at the camera. She appears to be a flapper. The postcard portrait is done in an art deco style. The young woman has beautiful eyes. This postcard was published by Clio as part of a series (No.1020). The card is dated 1910. My research discovered a nearly identical image in another postcard. That postcard was color tinted and and the caption under the models photograph stated “Happy New Year” in Dutch. SOLD
This mini trade card is advertising J. Baldon coffee and tea. The company was located in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The card features two adorable young girls sitting under an umbrella alongside their large dog. The dog dwarfs them in size. Note that this advertising piece is not printed on thick card stock paper. Instead, it is on thinner stock paper. This trade card was a premium that likely accompanied the purchase of one of Baldon’s products. This advertising item measures about 1.5″ x 2 25″. (SOLD)
This vintage real photo postcard features actress Maureen O’Sullivan (1911-1998). She is holding a ping pong paddle and standing next to a ping pong table. The Irish-American actress is best known for playing Jane in the Tarzan series of films. This postcard was published by Dutch publisher Jos-Pe. Arnhem. The card is part of a series (No. 432), and at the time this photograph was taken, O’Sullivan was under contract with Metro Goldwyn. The postcard is posted and has a Netherlands stamp. SOLD
This vintage real photo postcard features a photograph of the “J. Heemskerek” sailing into Cuba’s Havana Harbor. The postcard is labeled a “Souvenir of Cuba”. The “HNLMS Jacob van Heemskerck” was launched in 1939. The ship was a Tromp-class light cruiser that sailed for Netherland’s navy. It was decommissioned in 1969 and sold for scrap in 1970. The cruiser was named after Admiral Jacob van Heemskerk (1567-1607). The ship was designed to be a torpedo cruiser. The ship had not yet been armed when Germany invaded the Netherlands in 1940. She escaped to Great Britain where she was completed as an air defense cruiser. Winston Churchill visited the ship in 1940 and 1941. She was used to protect convoys and the ship seemed to be charmed because it never lost a ship under her protection. In 1942 she was assigned to the Dutch East Indies to reinforce the defense fleet. After another reassignment, in 1942, the ship took part in an operation to retake Madagascar. She then joined allied navy forces in Australia and resumed convoy duty. Toward the end of 1942, accompanied by an Australian cruiser, she attacked and damaged a German supply vessel/blockade runner. The damaged ship eventually had to be scuttled by her own crew. At the end of 1943, the “J. van Heemskerk” worked in the Mediterranean doing convoy duty. In 1945, the ship was the first Dutch warship to arrive in Amsterdam post liberation. After the war, the ship served as a barracks ship for naval trainees. In 1069, after decades of service, the “J van Heemskerck” was decommissioned. SOLD
This cartes de visite features a nicely dressed man with mutton chops and a chin beard. His arms are crossed across his chest and he has a look of confidence. Note that his hair is slicked back and is parted in the middle. The photo was taken by Albert Greiner (1833-1890) who operated a studio in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The postcard has a Dutch stamp and is addressed to someone living in Liwwadden, Netherlands. Liwwadden is the capital of the States of Friesland and has been inhabited since the tenth century. This interesting vintage real photo postcard features two women at the beach. Hopefully its not too hot, because if so, these ladies are shvitzing. The wicker seats placed on this beach also serve as shelters. Beach umbrellas must have been popular sometime after this photograph was taken. Note the gentleman in the background of this photograph. He is wearing a white shirt, white apron, and white cap. He is likely a cook or a waiter attending to the culinary needs of the beachgoers. Printed on the reverse of the postcard is the word “briefkaart” which is the Dutch word for “postcard”. Therefore this portrait was likely taken somewhere in the Netherlands. SOLD

This postcard was used in France and was postmarked in St. Vincent in 1906. The postcard was mailed to Sisteron, France. The postcard was published by the GL Company and is number 1174/5 in a series. The G. L. Company (1903-1920’s) was located in the Netherlands and was known for their real photo postcards featuring children and women that were used as holiday and general greeting cards. The also produced postcards that featured actresses and nudes as subjects. Most of the postcards they produced were hand tinted.
