MAJORETTE : PRETTY GIRL WITH LONG HAIR : BATON : BELLS : SCARBOROUGH

This vintage real photo postcard features a pretty teenage girl who appears to be dressed in a uniform. My guess is that she is a majorette of some sort. It seems that she is holding a baton and is wearing bells around her wrists. Her hat is unusual. She is grinning as she looks at the camera. This photograph was taken at the Boxell & Co. studio in Scarborough, England. The postcard is in excellent condition (see scans).

TWO BEAUTIFUL AND NICELY DRESSED YOUNG SISTERS POSE FOR THEIR PORTRAIT

The two pretty young girls in this photograph are nicely dressed and well poised. Their facial expressions give an appearance of maturity that is beyond their chronological years. The older girl has her hand on her hip; a pose that may communicate some impatience with the process of being photographed. The girls are likely sisters. The photograph is trimmed, so the name of the photographer of this image is unknown. The children are also unidentified.    (SOLD)

PORTRAIT OF A WOMAN AND HER LARGE NECKERCHIEF : DETROIT, MICHIGAN : CABINET CARD

This cabinet card portrait features a young attractive woman. She is dressed in an interesting manner. It looks like she is wearing a large neckerchief  held in place by a broach, but thats just my best guess. The photographer did an excellent job with the lighting in this photograph. The photographer of this image is C. R. Baker who was located at 35, 37, and 39 Monroe Avenue in Detroit, Michigan. Business directories for Detroit list Charles R. Baker as a photo printer beginning in 1876  and his listing soon changes to photographer and appears in directories through 1919. The Photographic Times (1884)  has a “seeking employment” ad placed by Baker. He was searching for a job as a “first class printer and toner”.  The 1900 U.S. census reveals that Baker lived with his wife, Sarah, and his 14 year old son Owen. Both Baker and his wife were 40 years old. The couple also appear together in the 1920 census. The census indicates that Charles Baker was born in Massachusetts and worked as a photographer.  (SOLD)

A TROUBLED WOMAN : NICE BRACELETS : CLEVELAND, OHIO

This original cabinet card photograph features a forlorn looking young woman. She is wearing two lovely bracelets. This image was photographed by Edgar Decker (1832-1905). He was one of Cleveland’s earliest and most renowned photographers. Decker was raised on a farm in New York. He grew up to be a shopkeeper. He developed an interest in photography. When he moved to Cleveland in 1857, he went to work in photography studios. After two years of experience, he opened his own studio, which operated for over 40 years. His subjects included many accomplished people including performers, businessmen, and politicians. In fact, Decker photographed four US Presidents, John James Audubon (ornithologist),  as well as General William Sherman. In 1862, he photographed encamped Union army soldiers before they left Cleveland to be engaged in the civil war. Decker won many awards in photography competitions. In 1887, he was elected President of the National Photographic Association. He served on Cleveland’s City Council from 1878 through 1882. Decker was succeeded by his protege, George Edmondson. Edmonson became a successful and well known photographer in his own right. (SOLD)

BESSIE WYNN: ACTED IN “THE WIZARD OF OZ” AND “BABES IN TOYLAND”

This cabinet card features a portrait of stage actress, singer, and comedienne, Bessie Wynn. She appears quite attractive despite her rather bizarre hat. Are those grapes atop her hat? Wynn was famous for her roles in the original cast of Victor Herbert’s “The Wizard of Oz” and “Babes in Toyland”. Wynn introduced the classic song, “Toyland”. She wrote the lyrics for “Toyland” as well as for other songs. She introduced several of Irving Berlin’s songs. Wynn was a showgirl in “The Little Duchess” company that featured Anna Held. Bessie Wynn played a number of “trouser roles”. These roles were defined as roles in which a female actress played a man in men’s clothing. Wynn acted in nine Broadway shows between 1900 and 1912. The photographer of this image was James Samuel Windeatt (1861-1944). The English census (1881) found Windeatt living in Callington, Cornwall and residing with his parents and older sister. His occupation at that time was working as a photographer. The next year he emigrated to the United States and worked as a photographer in Chicago, Illinois. He was a partner in the studio of Gehrig & Windeatt and later operated his own studio. He married his wife, Augusta, in 1888. Census data indicates that he had three daughters (Blanche, Charlotte, and Dorothy). SOLD
