Cdv photographs of Miss Marberg can be found in the collections of the Vienna Museum, as well as the Vienna Theater Museum. This photograph was taken by Moriz Muller Jr.. He operated a photo studio in Vienna, Austria. The reverse of the photograph displays a number of European photography awards the studio won in the 1870’s. This photograph has been trimmed to fit into an album or frame. SOLD
This vintage photograph features a pretty Geisha girl. Presumably, the photo was taken in Japan. Geisha girls are Japanese women who are entertainers. They perform ancient traditions of art, dance, and song. They wear traditional costumes and make-up. This photograph measures about 3 1/8″ x 4 1/2″ and is in excellent condition.

This vintage real photo postcard features actress and singer, Miss Aileen Davies (1902-1981). At first glance, this image appears to be a photograph of a pretty woman on a bad hair day. However, this is actually a photograph of Miss Davies playing the role of “Mad Margaret” in “Ruddigore”. The comic opera was also known as “The Witches Curse”. The production was presented by the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company and the music and libretto was written by Gilbert and Sullivan. It was first performed in 1887 for a run of 288 performances and was revived in 1920. The “Gasbag” (2006) quotes a review of Miss Davies performance in a 1926 revival of “Ruddigore”. In regard to the actress, the reviewer admires “her prissy delivery and skittish style” and describes her “wonderful sexy lift ” into song. This photo postcard was published by Parksle Pictures as part of a series (No. 157). Davies is best known for her role in The Mikado (1926). This vintage real photo postcard features an older woman with a unique sense of style. Note her large feather hat, wire rimmed glasses, necktie, and long fur coat. The woman has a very sweet facial expression. The AZO stamp box indicates that this postcard dates back to sometime between 1904 and 1918, has excellent clarity, and is in very good condition (see scans). SOLD
This vintage real photo postcard features a nurse, wearing a red cross armband, tending to a wounded soldier. The soldiers comrade is providing support by putting his arm around the shoulder of his compatriot. Both men are armed. Note the backpack on the back of the standing soldier. In addition, note the medical supply box held by the nurse. The stamp box of this postcard has an interesting story. “NBC” (Neue Bromsilber Convention) was a price cartel established in 1909 that continued until the 1930’s. The purpose of the cartel was to ensure that the minimum price charged for postcards was kept at a sufficiently profitable level. A number of postcard publishing companies joined the cartel in an effort to stave off the effect of competition on the pricing of postcards. This card is part of a series (no. 6511/12). This vintage real photo postcard features a portrait of three visitors to Coney Island. Coney Island is a neighborhood and entertainment area in New York City’s borough of Brooklyn. The postmark on this card was stamped in 1908. By that time, Coney Island was well known for it’s amusement parks. In fact, between 1880 and World War II, Coney Island was the largest amusement area in the United States. The city of New York built a boardwalk to be utilized by visitors. Where there are boardwalks and amusement parks; there are photo studios. One of these studios was the “Dream Studio” and the threesome seen in this photo found their way there to create a souvenir memory. The “Dream Studio” was operated by Mr. H. Tarr. It was located on Surf Avenue at West 6th Street. The 1911 Dreamland Fire burned down Mr Tarr’s photo studio, but in a short time, it was reopened. SOLD

These vintage real photo postcards feature beautiful stage actress Marie Studholme (1872-1930). The English actress and singer was known for her supporting and starring roles in Victorian and Edwardian musical comedies. Her theater career spanned from 1891 through 1915. Her roles included appearances in “An Artists Model” (1895), “The Messenger” (1900), and “Lady Madcap” (1906). Marie Studholme’s beauty made her one of the most popular postcard models of her time.
Postcard 1 is a wonderful portrait of Miss Studholme in costume for the stage production of “Miss Hook of Holland). The play was an English musical comedy. It opened at the the Prince of Wales Theatre in 1907 and ran for 462 performances. It originally starred Isabel Jay and Harry Grattan. The play also ran on Broadway. Studholme starred in the title role in “Miss Hook of Holland” on a long provincial tour from 1907 to 1910. This vintage photo postcard was published by Rotary Photo (no. 4890 A) and the photo was taken by the Foulsham and Banfield studio. This postcard has an interesting message. Rather than signing the card, the writer left his identity a secret by signing it with one word, “Guess?”. The postcard is postmarked “1908”. The card is in excellent condition (see scans).
Postcard 2 is part of the Rotary Photographic Series (no. 4188 A) and was printed in England. Miss Studholme’s portrait was photographed by the celebrated Foulsham & Banfield studio. Although photo postcard portraits of Miss Studholme are common , this particular photograph is uncommon. (SOLD)
Postcard 3 is also part of the Rotary Photographic Series (no. 348 K). This photograph highlights the beauty of Miss Studholme. The postcard is also aimed to be erotic judging by the generous view of the actress’s cleavage. The photography studio that produced this image is W & D Downey of London, England. This studio was well known and highly respected in England. They advertised themselves as photographers specially appointed to photograph the imperial and royal families of Europe and they photographed many other celebrities. Although Studholme posed for many postcard portraits, this particular photo postcard is uncommon. The postcard is in excellent condition (see scans).
Postcard 4 is a member of the Rotary Photographic series (No. 24 L), just like Postcard 1 and Postcard 2. In this portrait, Miss Studholme flashes a beautiful smile. The low cut dress that she is wearing is a bit risque for the era. It appears that she was not adverse to the idea of suggestive poses. The photographer who took this portrait photo of Marie Studholme is a well known female photographer named Lizzie Caswall Smith. Smith (1870-1958) was a British photographer who operated in the early 1900’s. She specialized in photographing members of society and celebrities. Many of her photographs were used for postcards. She was involved in the Women’s Suffrage movement and photographed many of the leading suffragettes. She also photographed many actors including Billie Burke and Maude Fealy. She operated the Gainsborough Studio from 1907 through 1920 (309 Oxford Street) and moved to a new location (90 Great Russell Street) where she remained until she retired in 1930 at the age of 60 years-old. Her most famous photograph is a portrait of Florence Nightingale taken in 1910. It was auctioned in 1908 and sold for 5500 pounds which is an equivalent today of nearly 8,000 dollars. The National Portrait Gallery has 84 portraits associated with Lizzie Caswall Smith. The postmark stamped on this postcard indicates that it was mailed in 1907. The message on the card is written to a 13 year-old girl. The writer of the card apologizes for not sending a letter sooner and explains “but I’m so busy”. It is interesting to note that “excuses” have not changed much over the last hundred years. SOLD

This vintage real photo postcard features a handsome and well dressed young man reading a magazine or newspaper. He is wearing a suit with a high collar dress shirt, a tie, and a pocketchief. His slicked back hair is neat. Occupationally, this gentleman is likely a professional of some kind. The photographer of this postcard portrait is Florencio Bixio. He was a talented photographer who operated photo studios in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was active between at least 1900 and 1930. He died in Buenos Aires in 1933. A number of his photographs can be found in the Cabinet Card Gallery. This is an uncommon themed postcard. The card has a Kolux stamp box. I believe that Kolux is a type of camera. I can find no information about their involvement in postcard publishing. This photo postcard is in good condition (see scans)

This cabinet card portrait features three young sisters and their small dog. The girls are wearing cute identical dresses. The girls may have been posing for this photograph for awhile and at least two of the siblings seem to have lost their patience. The youngest child, appears to be near tears or actually in tears. The oldest girl is rolling her eyes at the photographer while the middle child appears relatively nonplussed, The dog is wearing dog tags. I had no idea that dogs wore dog tags as early as the turn of the century.The photographer of this image is Richard Brand. He operated a studio in Mittweida, Germany. He was an award winning photographer. The front of the card lists medals he had won in Amsterdam, Dresden, and Weimar. This photograph was taken in either 1901 or shortly thereafter.This cabinet card is in excellent condition (see scans). (SOLD)
