This carte de visite photograph features an adorable little girl. She is well dressed and is holding a parasol. This cdv photo was taken at the Berlin (Germany) studio of Sophus Williams. Mr. Williams was a significant figure in the early days of photography. His photographs are cited in many articles and they appear in multiple esteemed museums. Sophus Williams’s actual name was Sophus Vilhelm Schou. He was of Danish origin but became a German photographer and publisher. He was born in Copenhagen in 1835 and he died in Grabow, Germany in 1900. He went to London in 1859 and at an unknown date, moved to Berlin where he passed himself off as being British. He was married to Agnes Klitz (1843-1911). In 1868, Sophus partnered with businessman Rudolph Gustav Leonhard Reinhold Knaak , to buy out an art dealer’s trading company (E. Linde & Co). The firm was located in Berlin, Germany. Sophus Williams published the work of many photographers and participated in Vienna’s 1873 World Exhibition. His publishing firm was well known for many formats, including Stereoscopic photos, Carte de Visite images, Cabinet Cards, and Leporellos. What are Leporellos? They are printed material folded into an “accordion-pleat” style. The method is also known as a “concertina fold”. Williams’s “Linde & Co” was well known for their photographs of paintings. Williams was active in Berlin through much of the 1860’s and 1880’s. Sophus Williams succumbed to a heart attack in 1900. His work can be found in high profile museums such as J Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles, CA) and the George Eastman Museum (Rochester, NY), The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York City), The British Museum (London, England), and The Altes Museum (Berlin). This vintage real photo features dancer/actress Lydia de Rostow. She is dressed in a dance costume that accentuates her shapely figure. The photograph was taken by Felix studio, which was located in Paris, France. Luminous-Lint describes Felix as a “photographer of couture in the first decades of the 20th century in France”. He was an early fashion photographer who operated, according to Luminous-Lint, during two decades (1900-1920). The name “R Guilleminot” is printed on the reverse of the postcard. Guilleminot was a firm based in Paris that manufactured photographic plates and papers. Much of their photo paper was used for printing real photograph postcards. The company existed between 1858 and 1994. This vintage postcard portrait is in very good condition (see scans).

A pretty young woman poses for her portrait in this cabinet card photograph taken by Jacob C. Banta of Watertown, New York. The woman is wearing her hair up and a serious expression as she stands by an open ornate gate. Mr Banta can be found in the 1880 US census. He was born around 1832 and lived with his wife Sarah and 21 year-old daughter Lillie in Watertown. At the time of the census he was working as a photographer and local business directories indicate that he kept that employment until at least 1891. This vintage photograph features a close-up portrait of two women. My opinion is that the two ladies are mother and daughter. An interesting aspect of this photo is that the image presents contrasting emotions. The mother appears intensely serious. She is absolutely not relaxed. The daughter presents a sweet smile and a happy mood. She appears relaxed and well poised in front of the camera. This photograph measures about 5 1/2″ x 3 5/8″ and is in excellent condition (see scans).

Dolly Davis (1896-1962) was a French film actress. She is described by IMDb as very pretty and very “lively”. She was very active in film during the 1920’s. That was also the height of her popularity. She appeared mostly in comedies. She often acted in films with her companion, Andre Roanne. She appeared in international films near the close of the silent film era. She continued to act with the advent of sound films. She retired in 1937 and focused on painting. The IMDb reports that she has 52 film credits ranging from 1920 through 1936. This vintage real photo postcard is part of a series, “Peugeot 12 six Collection”. Miss Davis is seen entering into a chauffer driven luxury automobile. The photographer of this image was GL Manuel Freres. The studio was founded by brothers Gaston and Lucien Manuel. This vintage provocative real photo postcard features a pretty young woman sitting on a loveseat, and beckoning for the attention of someone outside the range of the camera. She is offering that person a bouquet of dark flowers. The woman is dressed in a risque fashion. Her attire is not exactly everyday wear. One wonders if she is wearing a costume portraying a gypsy, or is perhaps, a flapper. The pictured woman is showing more bare skin than would normally be expected from a woman of this era. Note her unusual and interesting head covering. The AZO stamp box on this postcard reveals that it was produced sometime between 1918 and 1930. The postcard is in very good condition (see scans).

This vintage real photo postcard is a wonderful example of an occupational image. My only issue with this photograph is that I am uncertain of the subject’s occupation. My first hypothesis is that the man is a wallpaper hanger. My second guess is that he works with cement or tile. His tools should reveal his occupation but I know little about such things. Hopefully, a visitor to the Cabinet Card Gallery will leave a comment and reveal this tradesman’s line of work. This photo postcard portrait presents the man, his work clothes, and his tools with great detail and clarity. He is well poised, has a great smile, and gives an impression of being a friendly nice guy. This vintage postcard has excellent clarity and is in excellent condition (see scans).

This vintage real photo postcard features a tall and thin young woman posing for her portrait at Chung’s (?) Studio in the town Port of Spain, Trinidad. She is wearing one of her nicest dresses for the occasion. Her accessories include white gloves, a bracelet, earrings and a pretty hat. The AZO stamp box indicates that the postcard dates back to sometime between 1926 and the 1940’s. The city of Port of Spain is the capital city of Trinidad and Tobago. Note the photographer’s embossed stamp at the bottom center of the card. SOLD
