This vintage real photo postcard features stage actress Olga Charna. She was a Russian soprano. The photo of Miss Charna was taken by the celebrated firm of the Dover Street Studios. The postcard was published by G. W. Saxby; located in Margate, England. The postcard has a postmark from Margate that is dated 1910. SOLD
This vintage photograph features a young girl riding on a toy airplane. The plane is actually a biplane. It looks very realistic. Note the decals on the wings. There are words painted on the fuselage. My guess is that they say “Paris – Rome”. The reverse of this photograph has an inscription in French. The notation indicates that the girl’s name is Raymonde and that the photograph was taken in 1930. Since I could only partially translate the inscription, it is possible that 1930 may actually be the date that the girl was born. This vintage photo measures about 4 1/2″ x 3 1/4″ and is in very good condition (see scans).

This real photo postcard features George Alexander, an English stage actor, theatre producer, and theatre manager. He began his professional acting career in 1879. He became interested in theatre management and in 1890, he leased a London theatre and began producing plays. In 1891, he moved to the St. James’s Theatre where he spent the rest of his career, acting and producing. Three of his most successful plays were Oscar Wilde’s ‘Lady Windermere’s Fan” (1892), “The Second Mrs Tanqueray” (1893), and Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest (1895). Alexander was born in Reading, Berkshire, England. His father was a travelling salesman. George was educated in private schools. He left school at the age of fifteen in order to pursue amateur acting. Upon becoming a professional actor, he joined a repertory company. That was followed by a stint in a touring company. He received positive reviews and his status as an actor rose. In 1882, George married Florence Jane Theleur (1857-1946). She shared his interest and involvement in the theatre and both also had strong engagement in public affairs. During the 1880’s, Alexander expanded his acting experience. His work for actor/manager, Henry Irving, provided him with an excellent theatrical education. During his time with Irving, George toured in the United States on two occasions. George served on the London County Council from 1907 to 1913. George was also a benefactor and a participant in many organizatIions that benefitted actors and the theatre. He also worked for charities like the Red Cross and the League of Mercy. In 1911, Alexander was knighted. He died from tuberculosis and diabetes in 1918. This postcard was published by Rotary Photo as part of a series (no. 4225 D). The portrait photo was taken by the celebrated studio of Ellis & Walery. The postmark on this card was stamped in 1907. This postcard is in very good condition (see scans).

This vintage real photo postcard features a pretty young girl holding a bunch of long stemmed flowers. She is dressed in white; white bow, white dress, and white shoes. She has an ethnic appearance. She may be from the Mediterranean region, or perhaps Central or South America. This postcard’s Artura stamp box indicates that it was published sometime between 1908 and 1924. SOLD
This cabinet card photograph features a very handsome man wearing fur coat in Prineville, Oregon. Note his wonderful mustache. This cabinet card portrait was taken by the Western Photo Association studio. The managers of the business were G. H. Ramsdell and F. P. Eastburn. A notation on the reverse of the photograph indicates that the subject of this photo is J. H. Nigle of Prineville, Oregon. The date of the photograph is noted as March, 1891. A preliminary search found little information about the gentleman in this photo. The U.S. General Land Office has an 1891 record of a John H. Nigle from Crook County (the location of Prineville). No other information was found. SOLD
This carte de visite portrait features actress Julie Marberg. She appears quite young in this photograph. She is wearing flowers in her hair and it appears that she is also wearing a hat or bow. Cdv photographs of Miss Marberg can be found in the collections of the Vienna Museum, as well as the Vienna Theater Museum. This photograph was taken by Moriz Muller Jr.. He operated a photo studio in Vienna, Austria. The reverse of the photograph displays a number of European photography awards the studio won in the 1870’s. This photograph has been trimmed to fit into an album or frame. SOLD
This vintage photograph features a pretty Geisha girl. Presumably, the photo was taken in Japan. Geisha girls are Japanese women who are entertainers. They perform ancient traditions of art, dance, and song. They wear traditional costumes and make-up. This photograph measures about 3 1/8″ x 4 1/2″ and is in excellent condition.

This vintage real photo postcard features actress and singer, Miss Aileen Davies (1902-1981). At first glance, this image appears to be a photograph of a pretty woman on a bad hair day. However, this is actually a photograph of Miss Davies playing the role of “Mad Margaret” in “Ruddigore”. The comic opera was also known as “The Witches Curse”. The production was presented by the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company and the music and libretto was written by Gilbert and Sullivan. It was first performed in 1887 for a run of 288 performances and was revived in 1920. The “Gasbag” (2006) quotes a review of Miss Davies performance in a 1926 revival of “Ruddigore”. In regard to the actress, the reviewer admires “her prissy delivery and skittish style” and describes her “wonderful sexy lift ” into song. This photo postcard was published by Parksle Pictures as part of a series (No. 157). Davies is best known for her role in The Mikado (1926). This vintage real photo postcard features an older woman with a unique sense of style. Note her large feather hat, wire rimmed glasses, necktie, and long fur coat. The woman has a very sweet facial expression. The AZO stamp box indicates that this postcard dates back to sometime between 1904 and 1918, has excellent clarity, and is in very good condition (see scans). SOLD
This vintage real photo postcard features a nurse, wearing a red cross armband, tending to a wounded soldier. The soldiers comrade is providing support by putting his arm around the shoulder of his compatriot. Both men are armed. Note the backpack on the back of the standing soldier. In addition, note the medical supply box held by the nurse. The stamp box of this postcard has an interesting story. “NBC” (Neue Bromsilber Convention) was a price cartel established in 1909 that continued until the 1930’s. The purpose of the cartel was to ensure that the minimum price charged for postcards was kept at a sufficiently profitable level. A number of postcard publishing companies joined the cartel in an effort to stave off the effect of competition on the pricing of postcards. This card is part of a series (no. 6511/12).
