S.S. PRESIDENT HARDING SAILS PAST THE STATUE OF LIBERTY IN NEW YORK HARBOR

This vintage postcard features the S.S. President Harding passing the Statue of Liberty in New York harbor. The SS President Harding was the sister ship of the SS President Roosevelt and both were “Harris Class Transports” built for trooping and cargo duties during World War I by the US Shipping Board. Neither saw service in the war. The President Harding was sold to Belgian interests and was ultimately sunk in 1940 by an attack from German aircraft. The ship was built in 1921 as a passenger ship. It was launched in 1923. Originally, the ship was owned by the United States Lines, a shipping company that operated cargo services (1921-1989) and ocean liner service (until 1969). Kermit Roosevelt, son of President Theodore Roosevelt, was one of the founders of the company. The ship was in the news a number of times. In 1939, the SS President Harding answered an SOS from a French tanker (W. Emile Miguet) and rescued the crew. It was presumed that the tanker was sunk by a German U-Boat. A second newsworthy event occurred in 1939. The liner got caught in a hurricane and suffered 73 injured (23 seriously). Immediately prior to the second World War, the the SS President Harding was involved in the rescue of fifty Viennese Jewish children from the future grasp of Nazi Germany. The ship transported the children to the United States. The plan was for the parents to eventually follow them but few actually made it out of the country in time. The oilette painting reproduced on the front of this postcard was painted by the famous German marine artist, Willy Stower (1864-1931). The painting is dated some time in the 1920’s. A logo for the United States Lines can be seen on the reverse of the postcard. This postcard is in excellent condition (see scans). SOLD

MARIA VANONI: PRETTY STAGE ACTRESS AND SOMEBODY’S “TRUE FRIEND”

New York City celebrity photographer, Benjamin Falk, produced this photographic portrait of stage actress Maria Vanoni. The reverse of the cabinet card appears to be inscribed by the actress who wrote “Your true friend, Maria Vanoni”. Miss Vanoni received mention in Folio (1884) when she appeared in “Orpheus and Eurydice” as a member of the Miles & Bartons Opera Bouffe Company. She was described as “a graceful sprightly actress of the French school”. “Opera Bouffe”was a genre of late 19th century French operetta. This genre was known for its components of comedy, satire, parody, and farce. This cabinet card portrait is in good condition. Note the crease in the center right area of the image (see scans).  (SOLD)

PORTRAIT OF A FASHIONABLE CURLY HAIRED YOUNG CHILD IN NEW YORK CITY

This photograph of a young child is from the studio of Professor David Ehrlich of New York City. The child is beautifully dressed and is holding a toy in his left hand and standing beside a chair with a toy ball on the seat. A sketch of Prof. Ehrlich and a sketch of his studio can be found on the reverse of the photograph (see scan below). The author of the blog, “Cabinet Card Photographers”, has researched Professor Ehrlich. It was found that Mr. Ehrlich had a photo studio at 160 East 66th Street between 1892 and 1902. In 1902, he appears to have moved his studio to 157 East 75th Street. He made a number of moves after that. He is last listed as a photographer in a 1913 business directory. He then switched professions and became a music teacher. The Professor must have possessed a strong drive to teach. While a photographer, he gave photography lessons to the public. It seems that he truly earned the title of “Professor”. This cabinet card portrait is in very good condition.

PORTRAIT OF AN ADORABLE LITTLE GIRL WEARING TRADITIONAL CLOTHING (PORTUGAL / BRAZIL)

This vintage photograph features a beautiful young Portuguese or Brazilian girl wearing traditional clothing. Her dress is very detailed and pretty. She is well accessorized. Her jewelry includes a number of necklaces and a ring. I find her head covering fascinating and unusual. The writing on the reverse of this photograph is Portuguese. It is written that this girl’s name is “Maria Amelia Porto” and that the photo was taken in either 1910 or 1916. An illegibility issue does not allow distinguishing which of the two years are written. SOLD

WORLD WAR 1 MEDICS : A GROUP PORTRAIT

I could really use some help here. Who are these men? Which branch of the military are they from? What nation’s armed services do they serve in? The previous owner of this vintage real photo postcard stated that the men seen in this image are a group of World War 1 medics. I can not confirm his statement, but it is true, that the soldier sitting in the middle of the bottom row, has red cross patches on both of his upper sleeves. At least this man, seems to be in a medical unit. Another clue might be the observation that the gentleman, third from the left in the top row, appears to be wearing a World War 1 era uniform. Speaking of uniforms, why is it that all eight of the men wearing badges on their hats, have different badges. These men’s uniforms are certainly not uniform. I am eager to hear cabinet card gallery visitors opinions about the identity of this military group. This postcard is postally unused, has excellent clarity, and is in very good condition (see scans). ADDENDUM: A knowledgeable visitor to the Cabinet Card Gallery has shared some information concerning this postcard. The visitor confirmed that these are WWI soldiers (1914-1918). The men were serving in different battalions of the British Army. Most of the men are wearing uniforms reserved for wounded soldiers. The uniforms are called hospital dress. There is also confirmation that the soldier I identified as a medic is indeed a medic.
