THE LADY IS A VAMP: BEA GOLL, BEGUILING HUNGARIAN ACTRESS

This vintage real photo postcard features Hungarian actress and dancer, Bea Goll (1927-1914). Information about this pretty performer is sparse. In 1941, she danced in a revue. At 15 years of age, she married film producer, Antal Takacs. During the second World War, she appeared in seven films. She is considered to be one of the primary Hungarian actresses that played the role of the Hollywood style “vamp”. What is a “vamp”? The Merriam Webster dictionary defines “vamp” as a woman who use charm and guile to seduce and exploit men.  In 1948, Goll left Hungary with her husband to settle in Switzerland. She remained there until her death. This photo postcard was published by Film-Foto-Verlag and is part of a series (#A3902/1). The postcard has excellent clarity and is in excellent condition (see scans).

PORTRAIT OF TWO WORKERS AT THE TELEGRAPH OFFICE IN LONDON, ENGLAND

This cabinet card portrait features a young man in uniform and a young woman wearing a uniform type dress. The man’s cap has a patch that appears to show a horse and rider. The woman is wearing glasses as well as jewelry. Note her large watch. What is the story that goes with this lovely couple. Are they even a couple? They could be siblings. Is the young man wearing a military uniform? The previous owner of this photograph stated that this is a portrait of two telegraph workers. The man in uniform was described as a telegraph delivery boy (man). The website “Photographers of Great Britain and Ireland 1840-1940” tells the story of the photographer who produced this photograph. Henry Bown (1841-1921) began his career as a photographer sometime between 1871 and 1876. At the time that he produced this cabinet card, he had six photo studios around London. This photo came from his studio on New Kent Road. Henry had five sons involved in his business. In 1919, his son Charles Bown took over the business. PORTRAIT OF A WELL DRESSED AFRICAN AMERICAN MAN (1926-1940’S)

This vintage real photo postcard features a full length portrait of a well dressed African American man. Note his sporty cap. He appears to be a relatively young man and is displaying a serious expression. The man”s nam and the photographer’s name and location are unknown. The AZO stamp box on the reverse of the postcard indicate that the photo was taken sometime between 1926 and the 1940’s.   SOLD

PORTRAIT OF THE MOST ADORABLE SIX YEAR OLD LITTLE GIRL YOU’VE EVER SEEN (1924)

This vintage real photo postcard features a portrait of one of the most adorable little girls that I haver seen. The reverse of the postcard indicates that this photograph was taken in 1924 and the young lady in the image is six years old. Whoever dressed this child for her day at the photo studio, had a keen fashion sense. In addition the child’s facial expression is charming and priceless. The little girl appears as if she is preparing to go for a walk on a rainy or rain threatening day. The unidentified photographer was gifted. I wish I could see more of his/her photographs. The locale of the photo studio is also unknown. It is possible that this photograph was taken in Canton, Ohio; since that city is listed as the home of the intended receiver of this postcard. This photo postcard has excellent clarity and measures about 3 3/8″ x 5 1/4″. This unique and magical postcard is in very good condition (see scans).

PORTRAIT OF EIGHT MEN IN THE GERMAN COUNTRYSIDE DRINKING BEER; ONE IS WEARING A DRESS (1927)

This vintage real photo postcard features a group of German beer lovers gathered around a keg in a country-side setting. This photograph is a treasure trove of interesting elements. First, the keg of beer is labelled with the title “Memories in Lindau 1927” (translated from German). Second,the bruiser in the center of the back row is holding a beer mug on steroids. It is likely that no one will challenge or fight him for the huge glass of dark beer. Finally, what is the story about the gentleman/lady in the center of the middle row. To quote the Kinks, “Girls will be boys, and boys will be girls”. It is likely that the man wearing the dress, seen in this postcard, did so for fun. It is not unusual to see cross dressing in photographs from this era. Generally, wearing opposite sex clothing in these images was done for entertainment, rather than for sexuality reasons. Women also dressed as men in photographs. Vesta Tilley (1864-1952) was an English music hall performer who was one of the most famous male impersonators of her time. She was a star in both Britain and the United States for over three decades (see her photo below). Returning to the subject of the beer drinking celebrants, we learn from the writing on the keg, that they are partying in Lindau, Germany. Lindau is a major town and an island in Bavaria. It is located on the eastern side of Lake Constance (Bodensee in German). The origin of Lindau’s name is thought to be the “linden tree”. Lindau is known for being near the Austrian, German, and Swiss borders. This vintage postcard has excellent clarity and is in very good condition (see scans).

PRESS PHOTO OF FIVE EASTERN AIRLINE STEWARDESSES ON A PICKET LINE AT JFK INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (1973)

This vintage press photo was taken by the Associated Press while they were covering the Eastern Airlines stewardess strike that occurred in 1973. The photograph features five of the airline’s stewardesses on a picket line. The picket signs indicate that the women were seeking improved retirement benefits and higher wages. The stewardesses were picketing at JFK airport in New York City. They are identified by name in the caption. This was a “Wildcat Strike”, which is defined as a strike action taken by union workers without the support or approval of the union leadership. Eastern Airlines was in business between 1926 and 1991. Ironically, labor disputes was one of the significant reasons that the airline failed. This photograph formerly resided at the library of the “Plain Dealer”. The Plain Dealer is the major newspaper in Cleveland, Ohio. The paper has been around for awhile; it was founded in 1842. The photo measures about 7 1/4″ x 10″ and is in excellent condition (see scans).

LIZZIE EVANS: THEATER AND VAUDEVILLE STAR KNOWN AS “THE LITTLE ELECTRIC BATTERY”

This cabinet card image is a portrait of vaudeville and musical theater entertainer, Miss Lizzie Evans (c1864- 19? ). She is known for her performances in New York City and Chicago from the 1880’s through the early 1900’s. The New York Times once described her performing skills as similar to celebrated actress, Lotta Crabtree. The website “Broadway Photographs” states that she was “small, flat-chested, and intelligent looking rather than beautiful, she captured attention by her cleverness on stage and her unflagging energy”. Her nickname was “The Little Electric Battery”. Evans was born in Mount Vernon, Ohio. She made her stage debut in 1882, as a 17 year-old. She joined the Nobles theater company where she performed a role in “The Phoenix”. After leaving the Nobles company she joined C. E. Callahan where she starred in plays for nine years. Her roles included parts in “Fogg’s Ferry” and “The Buckeye”.  A New York Times (1881) review of her appearance in “Foggs Ferry” reports that her performance was “earnest and vivacious”. The reviewer also stated that “Miss Evans has no voice for song” but that her talent as an actress should allow her the luxury of avoiding any “vocal efforts”. After leaving her association with Callahan’s company, Evans retired for two years. Apparently she had trouble staying away from the theater lights, which was evidenced by her appearance in “Old Kentucky”. She than performed in vaudeville until the 1900-1901 season. Following her vaudeville appearances she formed her own troupe. Her biography indicates that the lure that took her away from musical theater was that vaudeville offered both top billing and big money. She was married to the famous comedian, Harry Mills in 1891. This portrait of Miss Evans was taken in 1885, according to the inscription in the reverse of the photograph. The photographer was D. H.Anderson who operated a studio on Broadway in New York City. Anderson used the same photo studio formerly occupied by the famed photographer, Matthew Brady. Anderson had worked in various other American cities before moving to New York in 1881. He became known as a talented celebrity photographer. This cabinet card is in good condition (see scans).      (SOLD)

The tintype is in good condition with the minimal to moderate blemishes that are often associated with this type of image (see scans). Tintype photography was most popular during the 1860’s and 1870’s.

PORTRAIT OF A DARLING YOUNG CHILD WEARING A FUZZY KNITTED WINTER OUTFIT

This original vintage photograph features a darling child sitting in an iron chair and wearing a knitted winter outfit. The fuzzy pants and sweater are accompanied by a matching beanie hat The child is displaying a tight lipped smile which promotes an impish impression. The photographer and the locale of his/her photo studio is unknown. The photograph is on thinner photo paper stock than that used for cabinet cards or cdvs. The photograph measures about 6″ x 2 3/4″ and is in excellent condition. Glue remnants on the reverse of the image indicate that the photograph is a former resident of a photo album (see scans).  (SOLD)
