MISS LESLIE CHESTER: A THEATRICAL ACTRESS WHOSE BEAUTY COMPENSATED FOR HER LACK OF TALENT
Celebrity photographer, Sarony, of New York City, produced this head and shoulders photograph of actress, Leslie Chester. The actress is wearing an incredible hat. A review of one of Ms Leslie’s performances appeared in Life (1886). The review states that “Miss Leslie Chester is so pretty that her dramatic sins can be magnanimously pardoned”. The review goes on to report that Ms Chester “appears (in a role) as an ambitious amateur, who has no idea of acting and the part is distinctly appropriate.” Hopefully, Ms. Chester was as thick skinned as she was beautiful.

ATTRACTIVE FAMILY IN BERLIN, GERMANY (1912)
This cabinet card image is a portrait of an attractive family. The father has a terrific mustache and the mother is holding an open book of photographs. She is a slight woman who looks as if she has just seen a ghost. The couples two daughters are adorable. The photographer is Gericke whose studio was located in Berlin, Germany. The reverse of the card has an inscription indicating that the photograph was taken in 1912.
AN OFFICER AND TWO LADIES IN FRANKFURT, PRUSSIA
This cabinet card features a military officer and two women seated at a table. All three individuals appear quite austere. On the table are two small books and a bowl with contents that include a pair of scissors. Perhaps this is a family photograph, but there is likely an interesting story about the lives of the subjects in this photograph. The photographer of this image is Franke & Karcher of Frankfurt. At the time of this portrait, Frankfurt was ruled by Prussia.
THREE ADORABLE CHILDREN IN CONSTANTINOPLE, OTTOMAN EMPIRE
This cabinet card dates back to the days of the Ottoman Empire. The photograph features three very adorable children posing for celebrated photographer, Theodore Servanis of Constantinople. As the musical group “They Might Be Giants” describe musically, the city of Constantinople became known as Istanbul (1930). The children in this image are wearing cute bonnets and two are holding toys while the third has a basket of flowers.
TWO BOYS AND A HOOP TOY IN ST. LOUIS MISSOURI (SHADES OF THE LITTLE RASCALS)
This cabinet card is an image of two street kids posing with their hoop toy. The boys have a mischievous expression and appearance reminiscent of the boys who were featured in the vintage television series, “The Little Rascals”. They are wearing wonderful caps. Caps like these must be the predecessors of the baseball cap seen on similar aged boy of today. The studio that produced this photograph was the Metropolitan Photo View Company of St. Louis, Missouri. No further information has been located about this studio or concerning the identity of the two “Our Gang” members. This cabinet card features a baby in an ornate baby carriage. The child is covered by a fur blanket and has a comfortable looking pillow. The photographer is P. D. Werts of Iowa City, Iowa. Werts is mentioned in two photography journals from 1894. One of the journals includes one of his photographs of Iowa’s Governor and the Governor’s wife.
