PARADE : ADA, OHIO : SOUTH MAIN STREET : GAR : RPPC : 1907

This undivided back vintage postcard features a birds-eye view of a parade on South Main Street that took place in Ada, Ohio in 1907. On view are a group of patriotic American veterans marching down a major thoroughfare. It is very likely that some of the uniformed men in this parade are Civil War veterans and members of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR). This postcard photo includes a US flag and a billboard advertisement for Kemp’s Wallpaper. This postcard was postmarked in 1907. The card has a commemorative stamp honoring Captain John Smith of Jamestown fame.  SOLD

SWEET BABY CHILLING IN WICKER CHAIR : ADA, MINNESOTA : CABINET CARD

This cabinet card captures a very cute baby posing on a wicker chair. The baby is wearing a long gown and has a terrific sweet facial expression. The photographer is Halvor William Thune (1857-1932). He was born in Iowa of Norwegian native parents. He opened a gallery in Ada, Minnesota in 1883 and Thune still operated the gallery in the 1920’s. He was civically active and held a number of county and village offices including Mayor of Ada and Chief of the Fire Department. Thune also found time to operate his farm. This cabinet card has excellent clarity and is in good condition (see scans).

OKLAHOMA PORTLAND CEMENT CO. : ADA, OKLAHOMA : VINTAGE POSTCARD : AERIAL VIEW

This vintage postcard features the Oklahoma Portland Cement Company. The firm was located in Ada, Oklahoma. The company appears to have a very large facility and close access to the local railroad. The Oklahoma Porland Cement Company was built in 1906 and had the capacity to utilize twelve rail cars a day. This postcard is a lithograph by Stall Studio. The card was published by C.T. Photochrom (Curt Teich, Chicago, Illinois). SOLD

MAN WITH SPIKED HAIR IN GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN

GRAND RAPIDS MANA young man with a “spiked” hairstyle poses for his portrait at the Schellhous studio in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The gentleman is wearing a checkered jacket with a pocket handkerchief, and  his watch chain shows under his jacket. The photograph is dated 1886. The photographer of this image, Loran Webster Schellhous is listed in the Grand Rapids business directory between at least 1884 through 1893. He also operated photography businesses at various times in Colon, Coldwater, and Coopersville, Michigan. The Ada Historical Society (Michigan) indicates that Schellhous’s wife, Martha Catherine Faxon (1831-1905) was also a photographer. She is recognized for her work photographing leaves of various plants.
