PORTRAIT OF STAGE PERFORMER MISS NELLIE BODEN (PHOTO BY ERNEST DYCHE OF BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND)

This vintage real photo postcard features dancer and vocalist Miss Nellie Boden. Research revealed a dearth of information about this pretty young woman. The photographer of this image is Ernest Dyche (1887-1973). He operated a studio in Birmingham, England. He was a self-taught photographer who opened his first studio around 1910. His studio was near the Bordesley Palace Theatre and Dyche became very involved with theatrical portraiture. In addition to photographing stage performers, he also produced individual, group, family, and wedding photographs. He was succeeded by his son, Ernest Malcom Dyche (1921-1990). The younger Dyche, photographed a large number of the black residents of Birmingham. His work documented members of that community and has been the subject of modern day exhibitions. This vintage postcard is in very good condition.

PRETTY LITTLE GIRL DRESSED FOR WINTER IN DOVER, NEW HAMPSHIRE

A young girl wearing a winter coat and winter hat poses for her photograph at Miller’s Photo Company in Dover, New Hampshire. She is wearing a striped coat with big buttons and has a large fur muff to warm her hands. Judging by my observation of many cabinet cards, the striped coat is not typical winter wear for the era. The large stripes on the coat makes it look like prison garb. Note the fake snow in the background of this image.  The reverse of the photograph has a printed advertisement that indicates that photographer Miller’s main gallery was located in Birmingham, Connecticut. The likely photographer of this cabinet card was William E. Miller. Miller had a number of studios located in Connecticut. His gallery locations included the towns of Ansonia, Birmingham, Derby and Shelton. Miller is credited with taking some of the photographs for a book entitled The History of the Old Town of Derby, Connecticut 1642-1880 (1880). MAJESTIC GREYHOUND IN BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA

This cabinet card is an excellent portrait of a majestic looking greyhound (possible whippet) . The dog sits on a bench with as much regal bearing as any king sits on a throne. The photographer of this image is Abner L. Blanks. He is known to have operated his studio in Birmingham, Alabama,  between 1888 and 1890, but may have also been in business there during other years.

WOMAN WITH A BANJO ON HER KNEE IN BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND

banjoThis Cabinet Card portrait captures a woman posing with a banjo on her knee at a photographers studio in Sparkbrook, England.  Ok, so the banjo is not quite on her knee.  Is this woman a musician or entertainer of note? Unfortunately, there is no identifying information on the reverse of this photograph, so her identity remains a mystery. Sparkbrook is an inner city area of Birmingham, England. The photographer is Woodcock.
