PRETTY WOMAN LIVES HARD KNOCK LIFE IN MUNICH, GERMANY : CABINET CARD

A pretty woman poses for her portrait at the studio of Alois Koestler in Munich, Germany. She is shapely and beautifully dressed. Her facial expression gives her the appearance of someone who is extremely stressed. It is as if her eyes are saying “I can’t take much more of this pressure!”. She look frazzled and exhausted. I wonder if this is just pure personal projection on my part or if other observers of this photograph see this young woman as appearing overwhelmed?  Hopefully, some visitors to the cabinet card gallery will leave their impression in the comment section. It is interesting to note that this photograph may have been taken during difficult times in Munich. Pre war was certainly tense and stressful times. Following the outbreak of World War I (1914); the Allies blockaded Germany and there were food and fuel shortages in Munich. Perhaps the subjects “hard knock life” appearance has to do with the stressful impact the war had on civilian life.     SOLD

This vintage photograph features a lovely couple on the occasion of their wedding. Judging by their smiles, they seem very happy on their special day. The young woman is wearing an unusual hair ornament. The photographer of this image is unidentified. The stamp on the reverse of the photograph has the word “Penig”. Most likely, this photograph was taken in Penig, Germany.  The residue on the reverse of this photo reveals that it is a former resident of a photo album. ROSITA SERRANO : “THE CHILEAN NIGHTINGALE” LANDS IN NAZI GERMANY

This vintage real photo postcard features pretty actress and singer, Rosita Serrano (1912-1997 . She is casually dressed and is holding two adorable dachshunds. This photo portrait displays Rosita’s lovely smile. Serrano was a Chilean singer who obtained her major success in Nazi Germany between the 1930’s and the early 1940’s.  Her singing was known for her bell-like voice and her pitch-perfect whistling. She was known by her nickname as “The Chilean Nightingale”. Rosita was born in Chile. Her father was in the diplomatic corps and her mother was a popular opera singer. The family lived in Portugal and France . By 1936, the family moved to Berlin. Serrano’s initial success was in the Wintergarten and the Metropol Theater where she sang Chilean folk songs. This performance earned her a record contract. From that point, she performed in German. Many of her songs became very popular. In 1938, she began to appear in films. When she was between film roles, she toured with two popular dance orchestras. Minister Joseph Goebbels helped het her appearances on a Wehrmacht (military) radio show. In 1940, Serrano’s song “La Paloma”, became very popular throughout Germany. Serrano’s voice style is described as “coloratura soprano”. Her recordings were in German and Spanish. She sang songs in the folk and pop genre. Her songs included flamenco, rumba, tango and mambo. During a Swedish tour in 1943, she did a benefit concert for Jewish refugees. As a result of this performance, she was accused by Germany of being a spy. Rather than return to Germany and face possible arrest, she fled to Chile. Germany than banned her music. She went on tour to the United States but was not well received. It is conjectured that US citizens could not get enthusiastic about hearing Serrano’s German songs, so close to the end of World War II. She returned to West Germany to appear in films in 1951 and 1952. Besides those two movie roles, her German comeback was unsuccessful. She returned to Chile where she lived out her life. She was not welcomed upon her return to her native country. The public in Chile condemned her for performing in Nazi Germany. She died in poverty. It seems to me that Serrano had the unfortunate pattern of consistently being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Poor timing ruined this talented singer’s career. Serrano’s filmography includes 8 films between 1938 and 1952. This postcard was published by Film Foto Verlag, a subsidiary of  UFA Universum Film AG. Note the company’s horse logo on the reverse of the card. The photo was taken by Foto Quick and the postcard is part of a series (no. A3564/1). Check out the video recording of Miss Serrano seen below. This real photo postcard is in very good condition.

STYLISH MOTHER AND HER TWO CHILDREN IN BERLIN, GERMANY

berlin cab

berlin cab 1A beautifully dressed young woman and two children pose for a family portrait at the studio of C. Gunteritz, in Berlin, Germany. The young woman is likely the mother of the two children, although it is possible that she could be their older sister. The little girl is holding a basket of flowers and her younger brother has a toy rabbit on his lap. The young woman’s dress is made of material that is not commonly seen in cabinet card  photographs. Hopefully, a visitor to the Cabinet Card Gallery will be able to identify the dress’s material. This cabinet card portrait is in very good condition (see scans).

TWO YOUNG WOMEN POSE BY AN OPEN BOOK IN NEU-RUPPIN, GERMANY (1905)

PHILADELPHIA LADIES

PHILADELPHIA LADIES 1

Two lovely young women pose next to an open picture book which is sitting atop a stool-like table. The woman are nearly identically dressed. Their style of fashion is conservative. Their heads are close to each other and tilted toward each other. This pose suggests that there is some intimacy between them. Perhaps they are sisters. The photographer of this image is W. Gerlich and some of his photography medals are exhibited at the bottom front of this photograph. The medals are from exhibits held in 1900 and 1901 and this image likely was produced shortly after that time. An inscription on the reverse of the photograph indicates that the photo is from 1905. W. Gerlich conducted his photography business in “Neu Ruppin”, which was a Prussian town in Brandenburg, Germany. The studio was located on a street named for “Paradeplatz”, or Parade Square, which was located in downtown Zurich, Switzerland. This cabinet card photograph measures about 8″ x 4″.   (SOLD)

PORTRAIT OF A UNIFORMED MILITARY OFFICER IN FREIBERG, GERMANY

dark soldier

dark soldier 1 This carte de visite photograph features a German soldier. I believe that he is an officer  in his dress uniform. Note the white gloves that he is holding and his sidearm. I bet that his sheathed knife is a frightening weapon. He is wearing an awesome hat decorated with feathers. This photograph was taken circa the late nineteenth century. The photographer was Max Seifert. He operated a studio in Freiberg, Germany. Freiberg is a town located in the the Free State of Saxony, Germany.  (SOLD)

PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG WEDDING COUPLE IN SAALFELD, GERMANY

kraatzert

This carte de visite is a wedding portrait that was taken by the Kratzert studio in Saalfeld, Germany. Like many wedding photographs of the time, we see the groom sitting and the bride standing. The couple appear to be relatively young. The pretty bride is wearing a wedding gown with a high collar. She is wearing a necklace and holding a bouquet of flowers. The groom is well dressed in his three piece suit and is displaying a poor version of a pensive expression. He appears to be uncomfortable, while his bride seems significantly more relaxed. The couple were photographed at a studio in the town of Saalfeld, which is the capital of the Saalfeld Rudolstadt district of Thuringia. The town is located in the valley of the Saale River.  (SOLD)

ADORABLE LITTLE BOY AND HIS TOY IN MANNHEIM, GERMANY (1926 REAL PHOTO POSTCARD)

little boy

This vintage postcard features a little boy (possibly girl) dressed in cute winter clothing and holding a toy in his right hand. The toy may be a ring. The reverse of the postcard has an inscription indicating that the photograph was taken in 1926 in Mannheim, Germany. In addition, the name of the child may also be included in the inscription. The child’s name is not clearly legible to me, but appears to be “Hilde Marz”.The postcard was produced with scalloped edges. (SOLD)
