PORTRAIT OF FOUR LOVELY AND BEAUTIFULLY DRESSED JAPANESE STUDENTS IN FUKUI, JAPAN (VINTAGE PHOTOGRAPH)

japanese girls

japanese girls 1

This vintage photograph features four lovely and beautifully dressed Japanese girls. Two of the girls are holding parasols and all four are wearing hair bows. The previous owner of the card shared some information about this image. I was told that the girls were students and dressed in Hakama style. Hakama are a type of traditional Japanese clothing. The Imperial Chinese court wore trousers during the Sui and Tang dynasties and the Japanese adopted this style in the sixth century. Hakama are tied to the waist and fall down to near the ankles. They are worn over a kimono. According to the previous owner this wardrobe was popular among students during the Meiji period (1868-1912) and Taisho period (1912-1926). This photograph was taken during either the latter Meiji era or sometime during the Taisho era. The photographer of this wonderful image is S. Noji and his studio was located in Fukui, Japan. The city is located on the coast of the Sea of Japan. This photograph measures about 8 1/2 ” x 6 1/2″.   SOLD

TWO PRETTY WOMAN WEARING KIMONOS : A CLOSE-UP VIEW

This vintage real photo postcard features two very pretty young women wearing kimono type dresses or robes. The fabric patterns are beautiful. Occasionally, I encounter cdv’s, cabinet cards, and postcards featuring women wearing kimonos. These early photographs document that kimono popularity in the western world was evident as early as the 1880’s. The postcard was published by “NPG” (Neue Photographische Gesellschaft) as part of a series (no. 208/4). The company was a leading bromide photo printing company for many years. A. G. Steglitz, is also noted as the publisher and this photo was published circa 1905 in Berlin, Germany. Note the initial “F. E. D.” at the bottom of the image. The initials stand for Friedrich Eyfried, the printer of this card. The company was located in Dusseldorf, Germany. This postcard is in good condition. Note the slight discoloration in and near the bottom left hand corner of the card.   SOLD

THREE EXQUISITE FRENCH WOMAN WEARING KIMONOS IN TOULON, FRANCE

This vintage photo postcard is simply exquisite. Three pretty women, wearing Japanese kimonos, pose for their portrait at the photographic studio of E. Meunier, in Toulon, France. At the turn of the century, kimonos and textiles from Japan captured the interest of fashionistas in Europe and the United States. Women began wearing kimonos as indoor fashion and some women used kimono fabrics to make western dresses. Over time, Japanese kimono fashion became absorbed into Paris Haute Couture. Occasionally, I encounter cdv’s or cabinet cards featuring women wearing kimonos. These early photographs reveal that kimono popularity in the western world was evident as early as the 1880’s. I have seen other real photo postcards with portraits of western women wearing Japanese fashion. However, this image is very special. The women are clutching Japanese fans and one of the ladies is holding a Japanese umbrella (wagasa).    SOLD

PORTRAIT OF A LITTLE GEISHA GIRL (CDV)

GISHA CDV

GISHA CDV 1

This cartes de visite portrait features a smiling barefoot little girl dressed as a geisha. She is holding an Asian style umbrella. Geisha girls are Japanese women who are entertainers. They perform ancient traditions of art, dance, and song. They wear traditional costumes and make-up. There was a time that geisha fashion was popular in the Western world. Both adult women and young children, in the west, would wear this Japanese fashion. It is not uncommon to find cabinet card era (late 19th and early 20th century) photographs of Western women wearing kimonos. This cdv photograph measures about 2 5/8″ x 3 5/8″.  (SOLD)GISHA CDV 2
