This cabinet card features Madam Naomi, who appears to have been a side show “fat lady”. The term “fat lady” is a despicable and derogatory way of describing someone overweight; yet the term found common use at circuses and fairs of the era of this photograph. Pencilled on the reverse of this image is the information that Madame Naomi was born in Michigan and at the time of the photograph, she was 30 years old. A further “fact” provided is that her arms had a circumference of 27 inches. Madam Naomi is not looking too comfortable in this portrait. She is wearing an interesting hat and one would guess that it would take her a long time to button all those buttons on the front of her dress. The newspaper The Weekly Statement (1890) has an article about a Madam Naomi appearance in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The article states that Naomi was advertised to appear in a museum and to “bestow her hand, heart, oleaginous sweetness, and a deed to a $5,000 farm to any young man who would marry her”. The offer was accepted by an insurance man from New York, Thomas J. Crowley; who came to Fort Bend and joined her on the museum stage to accept her hand in marriage. The photographer of this image is Baker, whose studio was located in Columbus, Ohio. There were many photographers named Baker operating out of Columbus when this photograph was taken. Many of the Bakers were relatives who operated the Baker Art Gallery. It is not clear which Baker or which studio is the source of this image. However, the initials below the photograph appear to be “LMB” which would indicate that the photographer was Lorenzo Marvin Baker (1834-1924).L. M. Baker was part of the Baker Art Gallery family. This cabinet card photograph captures baby sitting comfortably in a luxury baby carriage. There will be no discomfort from the sun for this cute baby; courtesy of the large umbrella built into this Rolls Royce of baby prams. The photographer is Tresize,of Germantown, Ohio. Research reveals that Ohio had a number of photographers named Tresize, and it is unknown which Tresize is responsible for this image? Dayton, Ohio was the home of The Tresize Brothers Studio as well as photographer S. P. Tresize. Samuel P. Tresize was a photographer located in Logan, Ohio. J.Q. A. Tresize was a photographer in Zanesville, Ohio and a partner in the Photography Studio named Jaquary and Tresize. William C.Tresize was a photographer in McConnelsville, Ohio. Florence Mette Young poses for her portrait at the studio of Fred S. Crowell, in Mount Vernon, Ohio. Florence is well dressed and apparently likes jewelry. She is wearing two rings, two bracelets and a necklace. Florence appears to be deep in thought. What might she be pondering about? The 1880 U.S. census reveals that she was born in 1862 and at the time of the census, she was living with her parents, Charles and Angelina Young. Her father was a farmer and her mother was a homemaker. The photographer of this cabinet card, Fred S. Crowell, can also be found in the 1880 census.He was born in 1844 and lived with his wife Ella, and their three children. Other research reveals that there was a Fred Crowell from the Mount Vernon area who enlisted in the 142nd Regiment of the Ohio Infantry during the Civil War.. He served only during 1864. Crowell trained as a photographer under Anna Payne, and worked in the profession in Norwalk, Sandusky, and Cleveland, Ohio. He then opened his own studio in Fredericktown in 1866. In 1869, he moved to Mount Vernon where he established another photography studio that was in business until at least 1889. This terrific cabinet card features a uniformed fireman wearing insignia on his chest and belt that indicates he was likely a member of the first brigade of his department. The photographer is Ernest F. Feiger (1832-1900) of Pomereoy, Ohio. He was a portrait and landscape photographer active in Pomeroy between 1860 and 1891. Feiger was a native of Pennsylvania. His son, Harry E. Feiger, joined the studio by 1887. SOLD
A pretty woman, wearing a beaded top, poses for her portrait in the studio of Allison H. Nichols (1849-?) in Findlay, Ohio. Nichols was born in Michigan, and after completing his education, went to work for his photographer uncle, A. M. Cheney of Charlotte, Michigan. Nichols became his uncles partner in the business but then moved to Findlay, in 1876. He operated a studio there until 1898. The subject of this photograph is identified as Flora E. Leonard and she was photographed at the Nichols Studio located at 79 Main Street in Findlay. SOLD
This photograph captures an adorable dark skinned girl with ringlet curls posing with her large doll. The little girl and the doll are well dressed. The child is wearing a cute patterned paisley dress. The amount of detail seen on the doll’s facial features is terrific, as is the little girl’s smile. The girl is dark complected. Many cabinet card sellers would advertise this image as being a photograph of a Native American, Black, or Hispanic little girl. Obviously, there is no way to know the ethnic origin of this little girl but unscrupulous sellers would have no problem advertising a possibility as a certainty. Collectors of antique photographs must beware of such practices within the hobby. The photographer is the Armstrong studio in Paulding, Ohio. SOLD
This lithographic postcard features a street scene in Gallipolis, Ohio. The town is located in Southeast Ohio along the Ohio River. There is a lot happening on Second Avenue as seen on this postcard. An older couple poses for their portrait in the studio of Filson an Sons in Steubenville, Ohio. The senior partner in the Filson studio was Davison Filson (1829-1899). He was a plain and ornamental painter and photographer. He was born in Pennsylvania and was of Irish descent. He settled in Steubenville in 1851. He worked as a master painter and bookseller before taking up photography in about 1863. In 1867 and in 1881, he made visits to the Far West where he did much outdoor photography. He was renowned locally for an exhibit he presented which was a montage of portraits of 12,223 deceased local residents and distinguished visitors (1897). Filson’s son was Charles P. Filson (1860-?). He was a sculptor, photographer and a portrait, landscape, and still life artist. He used crayon, ink, watercolor, and oils. He joined his father’s studio as a photographer in about 1879. He moved to La Jolla, California in 1937. Among his better known portrait subjects were civil war notables, Edward Stanton and Colonel George McCook. Daavison Filter also had a daughter that was a noted artist. Anna Filson (1857-?) was an artist active in Steubenville. This vintage lithographic printed postcard features a a view of the St. John’s Evangelical Church and Parsonage located in Kenton, Ohio. The church remains active in Kenton today. The same woman appears in each of these two photographs by the Baker Art Gallery of Columbus, Ohio. The woman is very pretty. She is wearing a black bow in her hair in both photographs and in the profile portrait she is wearing a hair comb. There is a lot of bare skin in these photographs which make them a bit risque, though tastefully done.
