SALVATION ARMY COUPLE IN POTTSTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA

This cabinet card photograph features a couple dressed in Salvation Army Uniforms. They are likely a married couple considering the familiarity evident by the woman resting her hand on the mans shoulder. The man is holding his hat on his knee and is wearing a Salvation Army Badge. The photograph was taken at Lachman’s Studio in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. A photographic journal (1894) cites a studio called Isaac S. Lachman & Son located in Pottstown. Anthony’s Photographic Bulletin (1901) reports the “recent death” of Isaac Lachman.

TWO PLUMBERS IN SCRANTON, PENNSYLVANIA

This cabinet card features two workmen, photographed by Washer, of Scranton, Pennsylvania. Both men are  holding adjustable wrenches. The men may be plumbers or some other type of tradesmen. One man is wearing work clothing while the second man is wearing a neck tie. One could humorously posit that the man with the tie must be management. The photographer is likely Edward Washer, a Scranton photographer mentioned in photography journals of 1911 and 1914.

LITTLE BOY FOUND IN SEASHELL IN PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLANIA

This cabinet card is a portrait of a little boy sitting quite comfortably in a sea shell chair. He appears disinterested in his surroundings at the Lies’s Studio in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He looks cute in his polka dot bow tie and fancy clothing. The seashell chair prop in this photograph is very unusual; in fact, such a chair has not come to the attention of the Cabinet Card Gallery ever before. The photographer, George Lies, deserves credit for his creativity.

BABY ON A BEARSKIN RUG IN COLUMBIA, PENNSYLVANIA

This photographic is a terrific portrait of an adorable baby photographed by Wm. Bailey of Columbia, Pennsylvania. The baby is wearing a long gown and appears to be lying on a bear skin rug. PRETTY WOMAN POSES FOR PHOTOGRAPHER IN “LAND OF THE BEAVER” (TAMAQUA, PENNSYLVANIA)

A very pretty woman poses for her portrait at the studio belonging to a photographer named Baily, in Tamaqua, Pennsylvania. The woman appears very fashionable in her high collar dress. Tamaqua is located in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania and is about 35 miles south of Wilkes Barre. The name of the town comes from the Native American word Tamaqua; which means “Land of the Beaver”. The town was in Pennsylvania’s coal region and thrived in the late 1890’s and early 1900’s. Baily’s studio was founded by David Baily circa 1862. An 1892 edition of Anthony’s Photographic Bulletin reports his retirement after 30 years in his occupation. The article adds that he was succeeded by his son Elmer D. Baily. The format of this photograph suggests a time period that makes it likely that this portrait was done by Elmer Baily.

THREE CHILDREN IN READING, PENNSYLVANIA AND TWO OF THE BIGGEST BOW TIES IN AMERICA

Three children pose for this cabinet card photograph by Strunk of Reading, Pennsylvania. The boys are wearing the largest bow ties in America. Are they bow ties or are they scarves, that is the question? The kids are very cute in their fancy outfits.  The photographer is John D. Strunk (1856- ?). YOUNG GIRL WITH INTERESTING BRAIDS IN MEADVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA

smallgirl_0005This Cabinet Card is a photograph of an intense looking young girl with interesting tube like braids. The photographer is A. R. Fowler of Meadville, Pennsylvania. Meadville is in northwest Pennsylvania. A historic event occurred in Meadville when a Black man tried to register his kids into public school and was turned away. He appealed the decision and the court declared the segregation law of 1854 unconstitutional and outlawed segregation in Pennsylvania in 1881.
