Black Man in Chicago

black-man-in-chicago_0002

This distinguished looking black gentleman posed for this photograph at the studio of Huszagh in Chicago, Illinois. Check out the interesting backdrop and props. Note the pattern on the curtain and how his right hand is resting next to a pair of gloves on what seems to be a fur covered table. Do you think that this well dressed gentleman is wearing his best suit or, judging by his attire, do you think he may be a member of the clergy? Let me know your opinion.

I have a family photo of my g-g-grandmother and her 3 sons in the same studio with the same props (curtains and fur rug). I have tentatively dated it ca. 1885, but I’d be interested to know if there is a date on the photo “Black Man in Chicago” shown here.

Unfortunately, there is no date listed on the reverse of this cabinet card. I would suggest that you research the date that Huszagh operated his photo studio in Chicago. That information may help you date your family photograph.
