Helen Tracy: Stage Actress

tracy

Helen Tracy (1850-1924) was an American stage actress. A series of roles in the plays of Shakespeare is included in her acting resume. She’s wearing very interesting earrings and a great hat.  The Cabinet card comes from the studio of Sarony, one of the renowned photographers of theatrical stars and other celebrities.

  1. I read somewhere (I think it was a thesis on the actor John McCullough) that Helen Tracy & McCullough had an illegitimate daughter c. 1869, Virginia, who also became an actress.

    • You are quite correct. I did not know that Virginia Tracy was illegitimate but I know that she appeared in both theatre and film. Virginia Tracy (1874-1946) was an actress and a writer of stage and film stories. As an actress she appeared in at least nine Broadway productions and several films. It would be interesting to know more about her writing career.

      • I can’t find much about Virginia. Though she did write a book about stage actors I intend to read sometime: Merely Players

Helen seems to have been a fast friend of McCullough’s – one of those romance-in-friendship affairs. I recently found an article in the NY Dramatic Mirror about McCullough’s last performance debacle, and the author places her there prominently:
