This cabinet card features a portrait of a young Mennonite couple. Note the couples plain style of dress, the young man’s beard, and the woman’s bonnet. The reverse of the photograph has an inscription noting that the couple’s name is “Mr. and Mrs. D. T. Wagner”. An additional note on the verso states “return to Ida Buckingham, Oakley, Illinois”. Ida Buckingham (1886-1964) was likely a relative of the pictured couple and possessed the photograph during some period of her life. The photographer of this image is W. H. Farley. This is a particularly interesting portrait. – I was under the impression that Mennonites were like the Amish, inasmuch as they shunned having any portraits or photographic images of themselves. – A wonderful card. Thanks again!
When I lived in Iowa, the Mennonites were referred to as “backsliding Amish”!
After a little research, I feel pretty sure the subjects in the photo are David Timothy Wagner (Wagoner) and his wife, Virginia. Ida Buckingham would have been his niece. Her mother, Susannah L. (Wagner) Buckingham and David T. were siblings. Ida’s obituary is on FindAGrave at http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Buckingham&GSiman=1&GScid=1966841&GRid=66781720&. From Ida’s obituary, it would seem that David T. and Virginia were members of the Church of the Brethren, not officially affiliated with the Mennonites until 1985. The Church of the Brethren members were noted to have beards, but no mustache, and whiskers that would not inhibit the “kiss of peace” or traditional greeting of a kiss on the cheek.
You have amazing research skills. Although my research found David and Virginia Wagner, I never found their connection to Ida Buckingham or any information pertaining to the church of the brethren. I felt I didn’t have enough info to identify the Wagners in my entry. However, your research tied everything together. Thanks.
I love the old photos and the challenge of putting names with faces. I have many old photos of my family, including a few cabinet cards, with no names. Just wish I could do as well with my own family photo identifications.
