A HANDSOME GENTLEMAN IN VIENNA (CARTE de VISITE)

This carte de visite portrait features a handsome well dressed gentleman with a carefully manicured beard and mustache. The photographer of this cdv photo is Rudolf Krziwanek (1843-1905). He operated a photographic studio in Vienna, Austria between 1870 and 1905. He also ran a summer studio in Ischl (Austria) between 1879 and 1900. He took portraits of the Hapsburg Court. His photographs are part of the collections in the J. Paul Getty Museum, the National Portrait Gallery (UK), and the New York Public Library. At this point in time, there are three of Krziwanek’s photos in the Cabinet Card Gallery. Krziwanek was also an inventor. In 1905, he received a patent for a device which was used in an “air gas system”. He committed suicide that same year. Print on the reverse of the photograph states that the studio was next to the Cafe Weghuber, a popular coffeehouse. The establishment was in business between 1806 and 1865. It was founded as Cafe Eichhorn and renamed Cafe Weghuber in about 1840. Later, a park was built in front of the cafe and it became a venue for concerts and large parties. Since the Cafe Weghuber went bankrupt in 1865, it is safe to say that this photo was taken before 1865. This carte de visite photograph has excellent clarity and is in excellent condition (see scans).

MARAQUITA ROSTANO : A PRETTY DANCER (PHOTO BY GERLACH)

This vintage real photo postcard features dancer Maraquita Rostano. Although my research found other postcard images of Miss Rostano, I was unable to locate any biographical information. The postcard was published by Georg Gerlach & Co.. The firm was a real photo card publisher and printer based in Berlin, Germany. The postcard was part of a series (no725/3). The message on the card was written in 1910 and the card was addressed to En Ville (In Town). This postcard is in very good condition (see scans).

THREE ADORABLE LITTLE GIRL : TWO WEARING SHADES

This snapshot photograph features three adorable little girls standing in a field. A pair of the girls are barefoot and two of them are wearing sunglasses and wonderful smiles. The third child appears to be eating something that looks like a sandwich. The child on the left is holding a pail in her left hand. SOLD

S.S. PRESIDENT HARDING SAILS PAST THE STATUE OF LIBERTY IN NEW YORK HARBOR

This vintage postcard features the S.S. President Harding passing the Statue of Liberty in New York harbor. The SS President Harding was the sister ship of the SS President Roosevelt and both were “Harris Class Transports” built for trooping and cargo duties during World War I by the US Shipping Board. Neither saw service in the war. The President Harding was sold to Belgian interests and was ultimately sunk in 1940 by an attack from German aircraft. The ship was built in 1921 as a passenger ship. It was launched in 1923. Originally, the ship was owned by the United States Lines, a shipping company that operated cargo services (1921-1989) and ocean liner service (until 1969). Kermit Roosevelt, son of President Theodore Roosevelt, was one of the founders of the company. The ship was in the news a number of times. In 1939, the SS President Harding answered an SOS from a French tanker (W. Emile Miguet) and rescued the crew. It was presumed that the tanker was sunk by a German U-Boat. A second newsworthy event occurred in 1939. The liner got caught in a hurricane and suffered 73 injured (23 seriously). Immediately prior to the second World War, the the SS President Harding was involved in the rescue of fifty Viennese Jewish children from the future grasp of Nazi Germany. The ship transported the children to the United States. The plan was for the parents to eventually follow them but few actually made it out of the country in time. The oilette painting reproduced on the front of this postcard was painted by the famous German marine artist, Willy Stower (1864-1931). The painting is dated some time in the 1920’s. A logo for the United States Lines can be seen on the reverse of the postcard. This postcard is in excellent condition (see scans). SOLD

MARIA VANONI: PRETTY STAGE ACTRESS AND SOMEBODY’S “TRUE FRIEND”

New York City celebrity photographer, Benjamin Falk, produced this photographic portrait of stage actress Maria Vanoni. The reverse of the cabinet card appears to be inscribed by the actress who wrote “Your true friend, Maria Vanoni”. Miss Vanoni received mention in Folio (1884) when she appeared in “Orpheus and Eurydice” as a member of the Miles & Bartons Opera Bouffe Company. She was described as “a graceful sprightly actress of the French school”. “Opera Bouffe”was a genre of late 19th century French operetta. This genre was known for its components of comedy, satire, parody, and farce. This cabinet card portrait is in good condition.
