This cabinet card features a fashionable woman wearing an interesting, but not necessarily attractive hat. She is very thin waisted, thanks to a corset. The photographer is Siegel Cooper and Company of Chicago, Illinois. Siegel Cooper was a major department store in Chicago. Note the art work on the reverse of this cabinet card. I see an entire bird on that hat. Looks to be 1890s based on sleeves. Does the image have a bit of a lavender shade?
Yes. The hat is decorated with a dead bird with “pretty” feathers. Hats adorned with deceased birds were not an unusual fashion statement during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. That was a time when whole birds were considered desirable decorations on lady hats. This was to the detriment of many bird species that were nearly wiped out by hunters looking to make a quick buck from the millinery industry. In regard to the “lavender shade”, you are correct. The card has a lavender shade. Thanks for your interest and comment.
I had read that an updated developing process in the 1890s would sometimes give the print a lavender tint. Very interesting to have another method to date an image.
