Victorian Mourning Woman Veil Saylor Lancaster PA Cabinet Card Gold Edges 1880s

This striking antique cabinet card photograph, dating to approximately 1885–1892, features an elegantly dressed Victorian woman whose name is faintly handwritten above her portrait, reading “Linda Jacobs,”. She wears an elaborate dark dress, long gloves, and a distinctive bonnet trimmed with decorative beads, from which a long dark veil falls gracefully over her shoulders and down her back. A large bow is tied beneath her chin, and her solemn, dignified appearance suggests that she may be dressed in traditional Victorian mourning attire, although this cannot be established with certainty. The portrait is mounted on an attractive deep burgundy card with beautiful gold beveled edges. The photographer was Benjamin Franklin Saylor (1838–1920), a prominent Lancaster, Pennsylvania, photographer. Saylor established himself in Lancaster during the 1860s and operated his photographic business for more than five decades. His work is represented in the historic photographic collections of LancasterHistory, reflecting his contribution to documenting the people and communities of Lancaster County. The reverse is blank.
