This vintage real photo postcard features a men’s Baseball team. The players are uniformed and the name of the team is the “Comets”. It is unknown whether the team represents a school or college or even a semi-pro team. The photograph also includes non uniformed older men who presumably are coaches. Note the houses and the antique car in the background. The driver of the car is looking out the car window at the photographer. SOLD
This vintage photograph, from the Bryan Goodman Collection, features a little known brand of an American automobile. “The Rugby” was produced by Durant Motors Company of New York City. The vehicle was nearly identical to Durant’s Star car. The Rugby was designed for export markets. The Star car could not be exported due to copyright issues. There already was a company called Star Motors that was located in the British Commonwealth. The Rugby was built from 1923 through 1928. In 1928 the Star name was changed to Durant and the cars were exported under the Rugby name until 1932. Rugby’s were built in Elizabeth (New Jersey), Lansing, (Michigan), Oakland (California), and Leaside (Canada).This photograph has a inscription on it’s reverse. The inscription states “Out with the Rugby for a Spin”. Mom certainly has a wide smile. It appears that her driving adventure was lots of fun. (SOLD)
This rare vintage real photo postcard features two men sitting in an antique convertible car manufactured by the Colby Motor Company. The firm was located in Mason City, Iowa. The company attempted to introduce the concept of sport cars to the American public. They designed an interesting automobile but failed in their attempt to reach American buyers. The company produced their first car in 1911. Their cars sold between 1400 and 1800 dollars. They offered seven different body designs. The car had a powerful 40 horsepower engine on a lightweight chassis. The “semi racing model” was built for sport, speed, and even racing. Not surprisingly, the company quickly got involved with automobile racing, known then as road racing. They hired Indianapolis driver Billy Pierce and Colby cars won several races in his Colby “Red Devil” racing car. It wasn’t long before Pierce was killed in a racing accident while driving that car. Due to financial shenanigans, the company went out of business after just three years. It is speculated that they made about one thousand cars. Today, there is only one known Colby in existence. It can be found at the Kinney Pioneer Museum in Mason City. Note what looks like prize ribbons on the left side of the image in front of the passenger. These ribbons may represent awards won by the Colby car in regard to racing or design. SOLD
This vintage lithographic postcard features a street scene (First Avenue) in Sandpoint, Idaho. Note the old cars, parking meters, and mountains in the background. The street scene includes a number of signs advertising a grocery, a camera store/studio, hotel, cafe, and a big man store. The most “cool sign” is the Mobil Gas sign with the Pegasus logo. The caption on the reverse of the card states that the street is situated near the beach and marina on Lake Pend Oreille. The town was associated with forest products, agriculture and the tourist trade. At the time of the publication of this postcard, Sandpoint had a population of about five thousand. This postcard was published by The Ross Hall Studio, located in Sandpoint. The card was postmarked in 1956. SOLD
This vintage real photo postcard features seven young women who appear to be having fun as they pose for their portrait as they sit in a faux automobile at an unidentified photo studio. These women are likely a group of friends. They are very fashionable and glamourous. It is curious that six of the seven women are wearing hats while the seventh appears to either be a non conformist, or left hers at home. Take note of the only woman that is wearing a white outfit. She has a wonderful playful “cat ate the canary” expression. A close-up photo of the vivacious young lady has been provided. SOLD
This vintage press photo features two Hollywood starlets and a cocker spaniel posing at a Los Angeles junk yard in support of the war effort (World War II). They are sitting on a junked car. A sign in front of them states “A Salvage Heap Will Build A Jeep” and is a reminder to the public that they need to recycle and not waste items and materials that could be useful in fighting the war. The actresses appearing in this photograph are Elyse Knox and Marjorie Lord. The caption on the reverse of this photograph comments that the starlets beautify the salvage heap. Elyse Knox (1917-2012) was an American actress, model and fashion designer. She is known for appearing in “The Mummy’s Tomb” (1942) and the war morale booster film, “Follow The Boys” (1944). Knox was also a popular pin-up girl during the war. She retired in 1949 after acting in 39 films. Marjorie Lord (1918-2015) was an American television and film actress. She played opposite Danny Thomas in the TV series “The Danny Thomas Show”. Her first appearance on Broadway was at age 15 and in total, she was on the Broadway stage four times. The IMDb gives her 79 acting credits. The stamp on the reverse of this photograph indicates that the photo was taken for Acme Newspictures Inc. (Los Angeles Bureau). SOLD
This vintage photograph features two young men standing next to their automobile. One of the men has a hand on his hip and he is appearing very confident and comfortable in front of the camera. This photo was purchased with a group of photos that were purchased in the Texas Hill Country. Some of the photos in the group were definitely taken in Texas. It is likely that this photograph was taken in Texas too. This image was developed by Foxco in San Antonio in 1947. The company has an interesting history. The Fox Photo Studio was opened by Arthur C. Fox in 1906 in San Antonio, Texas. Fox sold the studio for seven hundred dollars to Carl D. Newton in 1909. Newton was a clever entrepreneur. One of his gimmicks was to offer a free camera to anyone buying three rolls of film and prepaying developing and printing fees. His successor to the business was Carl D Newton II. By the mid 1930’s Fox advertised itself as the world’s largest Kodak finishers. Their processing plant was in operation around the clock. The company expanded and opened facilities in Dallas, Houston, Louisiana and Oklahoma. The company grew and grew and ultimately reached 12,000 dealers nationwide. In 1986, the company was sold to Kodak. Carl D Newton III kept the retail division of the business, calling it Fox Photo. Later, the business changed hands a number of times until it faded into history. SOLD
A mother and her two children pose pose for a photograph in front of their house. Two cars can be seen in the background. The three family members are standing on a dirt driveway. Mom is dressed plainly. She is wearing glasses. The daughter appears to be wearing a dress that is too short. The little boy is possibly wearing pajamas. His hair is uncombed and he is barefoot. My guess is that the family had little time to prepare to be photographed as not much effort went into looking their best. This photograph was found in the Texas hill country. (SOLD)
This vintage lithographic postcard features a photo of Bill James Chevrolet Inc. The car dealership was located on 3721 South Grand, in St. Louis Missouri. Note the two Chevy signs and the sign advertising the “New Car Show Room and Sales Office”. Also note the parked station wagon, the Corvair, and the pickup truck.
