AN EXTREMELY ATTRACTIVE COUPLE AT THE BEACH

This vintage photograph captures an extremely attractive couple at the beach. At least, I think they are at the beach. The pair are wearing bathing suits and are sitting on a blanket which indicates their location may be a beach. However, where is the sand and the water? This photograph measures about 3 1/2″ x 5 1/4″ and is in very good condition (see scans).

A BEVY OF BEAUTIES AT A BEACH ON THE BLACK SEA IN ROMANIA

girls at beach roumania 2A “bevy” of beauties? I’ve never used that word before. What is a bevy? I looked up the word and learned that a “bevy” is a “large group of people of a particular kind”. The “particular kind” in this vintage photograph are pretty young woman in their bathing suits at the beach. The beach is located in Romania and is at the edge of the Black Sea. Some of the women are using parasols to protect themselves from the sun. The reverse of the photograph has a stamp indicating that the photo was taken in Contanta, a city on the shores of the Black Sea. It is located in southeastern Romania. I would love to know the story behind this image. Are these young ladies, friends on a beach trip, or are they models posed by a professional photographer? What’s your guess? This photograph measures about 2 1/4″ x 3 1/4″.    SOLD

These vintage real photo postcards are meant to be provocative. Risque photos must have boosted postcard seller’s sales. Although these images are rather tame by today’s standards, they are not so tame for their time (early 1900’s). The model photographed for these postcards is shapely and has a pleasant smile. The postcards were published by well known photographer, Alfred Noyer. They are part of a series (no. 2916).  The celebrated photographer supervised a large photo studio in Paris. The Noyer Studio operated from 1910 until the 1940’s. Many of his early postcards were reproductions of artworks. He also produced illustrated patriotic postcards during World War I. With the onset of the 1920’s he began producing postcards of children and women. Many of the postcards he produced of women were nudes or risque images. Some of his postcards list his name while others are simply marked “AN”.   These  postcards were produced in France. They have excellent clarity and are in very good condition (see scans). (SOLD)

BATHING BEAUTIES: TWO YOUNG WOMEN ENJOYING A DAY AT THE BEACH

This vintage real photo postcard features two pretty young women enjoying a day at the beach. These bathing beauties are flashing wonderful smiles at the photographer. There is an abundance of interesting things to note in this image. Check out the bathing suits, sun umbrella, beach chairs, and the tents scattered around the beach. This color tinted postcard may have been considered risque during the era of it’s publication. This postcard was printed in England and published by the National Herald. The photographer is listed as “Underwood”. It is my hypothesis that this postcard was actually produced by the publishing company of Underwood & Underwood. This New York firm existed between 1882 and 1920. The company was founded by photographers Elmer and Burt Underwood in Ottawa, Kansas. The headquarters was moved to New York City in 1897. The firm grew and soon had offices in Toronto, Canada and London, England. Underwood & Underwood was known for publishing stereo-views, and in fact, they published nearly 40,000 titles. In 1910 they began to supply news photos for newspapers and postcard publishers. It appears that the image seen in this photo postcard was supplied by Underwood to the National Herald. Underwood & Underwood was sold to the Keystone View Company in 1921. This postcard is in excellent condition (see scans).

THE LITTLE BOY AND THE SEA (RUSSIAN VINTAGE PHOTOGRAPH)

This vintage real postcard is unique and adorable. A little boy is at the helm of a miniature sailing ship, not far from shore. Beach goers and large boats can be seen in the background. The toy ship commanded by this child is amazingly realistic down to the tiniest details. A logo below the photo states “Anana Kypopm” (the photographer?) and is dated 1964. The photographer’s logo displays a light house and a sailboat which indicates that the photo studio shooting this photograph was likely located in a beach resort town. The photo measures about 5 1/2″ x 3 1/2″.

DUTCH LADIES ON THE BEACH SITTING IN UNUSUAL SUN CHAIRS

This interesting vintage real photo postcard features two women at the beach. Hopefully its not too hot, because if so, these ladies are shvitzing. The wicker seats placed on this beach also serve as shelters. Beach umbrellas must have been popular sometime after this photograph was taken. Note the gentleman in the background of this photograph. He is wearing a white shirt, white apron, and white cap. He is likely a cook or a waiter attending to the culinary needs of the beachgoers. Printed on the reverse of the postcard is the word “briefkaart” which is the Dutch word for “postcard”. Therefore this portrait was likely taken somewhere in the Netherlands.  SOLD

PRETTY WOMAN ON THE ROCKS (1932 REAL PHOTO POSTCARD)

A very pretty woman sits on the rocks and poses for this splendid vintage real photo postcard portrait. The woman sits on the rocks along the shore of an unidentified body of water. The young woman is wearing a summer dress and has a parasol beside her. It is amazing to me how, dressed in a relatively tame fashion, she is just as attractive as any scantily clad model that appears in the Sports Illustrated bathing suit issue. I will admit, that the photographer most certainly posed her to reveal her partially uncovered calves. I guess sexual provocativeness sells postcards as well as magazines. This postcard has a message that is dated 1932. It was published by L. Bergeret of Paris, France. I don’t know if there is a connection between L. Bergeret and Albert Bergeret (1859-1932). Albert was a leading French postcard producer in France who operated in the city of Nice. In 1900 he produced 25 million cards and by 1903 he published 75 million postcards. I am wondering if L Bergeret may have been a successor to Albert Bergeret. L. Bergerets images seem to cluster in the 1930’s.

A PRETTY WOMAN WEARING A BATHING SUIT AT THE BEACH IN ORIVAL, FRANCE (1933 REAL PHOTO POSTCARD)

A pretty young woman, with her hands on her hips, poses in her bathing suit at a French beach. She flashes a sweet smile at the photographer. Note her bathing cap. An inscription on the reverse of this vintage real photo postcard indicates that the photo was taken in 1933 in Orival, France. Located in the Seine-Maritime department, Orival is in Northern France. The village is in the woods and situated on the banks and cliffs of the river Seine. This image is a particularly nice French beach photo.  (SOLD)
