The following is a rough translation of the caption into English. “At the camping, caravanning and sports fair, which was held at the Port of Versailles Exhibition Center, the election for ‘Miss Camping’ and ‘Miss Caravanning’ took place this afternoon.” The caption continues and identifies “Miss Camping” as Miss Gisele Candy, a sixteen year-old high school student, and “Miss Caravanning” as Miss Liliane Dupont, a nineteen year-old secretary. This vintage photograph features a teenage dancer on stage. Her flapper dance costume fits the times. She was performing in 1926, during the Jazz Age. The photograph is signed in the lower right hand corner. It is signed, “Obenaus Studio”. Research reveals that there was an Obenhaus studio operating in the the 1920’s in three locations in upstate New York (Albany, Troy, and Schenectady). The studio has a photograph in the Library of Congress. The photograph is entitled “Miss Yonkers, 1924” and it shows a young woman wearing a bathing suit and Miss Yonkers sash. She is seated on a small table and has her feet raised and her hands behind her head. Interestingly, she is wearing the same cutesy expression as the dancer in this photograph. SOLD

This vintage real photo postcard features Reina Nieves Gonzalez, the 1919 Queen of the Pangasinan Carnival. Pangasinan is a coastal province in the Philippines. Winning the contest was a big deal. There was no national carnival in Manila in 1919 due to ongoing World War I. The Pangasinan Carnival drew national attention. It was very well attended. Reina was only fourteen years old when she was crowned Queen. Her beauty was admired throughout the country. Real Photo postcards of Nieves, such as this one, became very popular in Manila and throughout the country. Her photos even outsold the images of previous Manila Carnival Queen winners. Nieves was born in 1905 to a ruling class family that lived in Pangasinan. A year after her reign, at the age of fifteen, she married Don Manuel Moran. He later became a Chief Justice and an Ambassador. In 1973, Nieve’s granddaughter won the Miss Universe contest, representing the Philippines. The photographer credited for the photograph on this postcard, is quite famous. Jose Nepomuceno is considered the father of Filipino Films. He started the first Filipino motion picture company in 1917. Prior to his movie production career, he was a successful and well known photographer. He was innovative and inventive. He was the first photographer in the Philippines to take photographs at night. He was the official photographer for beauty contests, carnivals and even official government events. SOLD

SYBIL WISE : BEAUTY CONTEST WINNER AND FILM ACTRESS
This vintage real photo postcard features British beauty contest winner and film actress, Sybil Wise (1901-1971). The “hand painted” card honors her third place finish in the Daily Mirror’s beauty competition. Miss Wise had a film career between 1928 and 1955. Her filmography includes five films. She was best known for her appearance in ” Adventurous Youth” (1928) and “Scarlet Pimpernel” (1955). The postcard was published by Rotary Photo as part of a series (No.M46-3). MISS SPAIN : CONTESTANT IN THE MISS EUROPE BEAUTY CONTEST
The pretty young woman seen in this vintage real photo postcards is a contestant in one of the early 1930’s Miss Europe beauty contest. She represented Spain in the competition.The Miss Europe contest was established by a French journalist in 1927. Most of the women in this event had won their own country’s national beauty contest, and used the Miss Europe contest as a warm-up for the Miss World pageant. This postcard was published by the well known and acclaimed photographer, Alfred Noyer. His Paris studio operated between 1910 and the 1940’s. Miss Spain’s portrait was photographed by the studio of M. Pergay. (SOLD)

MISS BULGARIA, SEVENTEEN YEAR-OLD VERA RUSINOVA COMPETES IN THE 1993 MISS WORLD CONTEST

This vintage photograph features the beautiful contestant from Bulgaria that participated in the 1993 Miss World Contest. This young lady’s name is Vera Roussinova (aka Vyara Rusinova). Miss Rusinova was only seventeen years old at the time of the contest. She did not place in the top ten finishers, but she likely had an amazing experience participating in the event and serving as Miss Bulgaria for a full year. The winner of the 1993 Miss World title was Lisa Hanna, representing Jamaica. In total, there were 81 contestants participating in the pageant which took place in Sun City, South Africa. This vintage photograph measures about 5″ x 7″ and is in excellent condition (see scans).

ROSE FESTIVAL QUEEN : PORTLAND, OREGON : (1947)

This vintage real photo postcard features the Queen of the 1947 Portland, Oregon, Rose Festival. The newly crowned Queen is named Georgene. She is pretty and is flashing a wonderful smile. She looks majestic wearing her crown, dressed in a royal robe, and clutching a large bouquet of roses. The festival has an interesting history. The Portland Rose Society was founded in 1888 and the group began with a backyard rose show. By 1902 the society was hosting a parade and pageant, in addition to the rose show. The first Rose Festival and Flower Parade was held in Portland in 1906. The parade included decorated floats, wagons, people and horses. The first “official Porland Rose Festival occurred in 1907. The Rose Festival Parade included an “electric parade” of illuminated floats. In 1930, the festival began selecting a Rose Festival Queen. The Queen was selected from a group of nominees representing local high schools. These high school seniors were called princesses. Research reveals that the young woman pictured on this photo portrait postcard is Georgene Ormston. She was a student at “Girls Poly” high school in Portland. (SOLD)

The pretty young woman seen in this vintage real photo postcards is a contestant in the 1931 Miss Europe beauty contest. She represented Spain in the competition. Her name was Ermelina Carreno (1912-1999). She became Miss Spain when she won the competition representing the region Castilla-La Mancha. A book about her was written by Enrique Sanchez Lubian and published in 2009. The book was entitled “Ermelin: The Beauty That Gave Birth To The Republic: Origins Of The Misses Contests In Spain, 1929-1932”. The Miss Europe contest was established by a French journalist in 1927. Most of the women in this event had won their own country’s national beauty contest, and used the Miss Europe contest as a warm-up for the Miss World pageant. This postcard was published by the well known and acclaimed photographer, Alfred Noyer. His Paris studio operated between 1910 and the 1940’s.
