brand 3 1

CUTE LITTLE GIRL WAITS FOR HER SHIP TO COME IN AT STUDIO IN WOLGAST, GERMANY

wolgast

This cabinet card portrait features a little girl, dressed in traditional costume, waiting at a faux dock for a ship to arrive. It will be a long wait because she is standing inside the studio of Hermann Sontag (Art Publisher) which had two location inside of Germany. He had galleries in the towns of Wolgast and Zinnowitz. I understand why the words “Kunst-Verlag”  (Art Publishing) is beside Mr. Sontag’s name. The backdrop in this portrait is masterful as is Sontag’s use of props (trunks and fishing nets). The child in this portrait is adorable. Note her interesting shoes and that she is holding a bouquet of flowers.

A LITTLE BOY AND A BIG SWING IN CORSICANA, TEXAS

swinger

This cabinet card portrait captures a well-dressed handsome little boy holding a large swing in a studio portrait by the Harper studio in Corsicana, Texas. The lad is unsuccessfully holding back a smile as he looks at the photographer. He apparently was enjoying posing for the cameraman. Using swings as props in cabinet card images is not extremely rare but this is one of the finer “swing images” that I’ve seen. To view other cabinet card photographs that employ swings, click on the cabinet card gallery category “Swings”. According to advertising on the front of this cabinet card, Harper had other branches of his studio located in Texas. Besides Corsicana, he operated in Tyler, Mexia, and Waxahachie. Further research that Harper also operated other studios in Texas (Bryan, Temple, Ennis, and Calvert). Apparently, Mr. Harper was quite an entrepreneur.   (SOLD)

A VERY BEAUTIFUL BABY IN ELWOOD, INDIANA (MAY BE A POST MORTEM PHOTOGRAPH

babyThis cabinet card features a very beautiful baby wearing a long gown. Her hair is styled beautifully and her eyes are wide open. This sweet baby looks like a doll. She is either wearing flowers on her gown or else someone has placed flowers on her. At first I thought this was a lovely portrait of a baby girl. However, the longer I have owned this image, the more I think that this is a post mortem portrait. The little girl’s expression and the size and placement of the flowers has led me to believe that her poor soul had departed before the photographer took this photograph. This photograph really tugs at my emotions. The image was taken by the Rodgers & Manson studio (Gem Gallery) in Elwood, Indiana.

MEET JETTIE OFFERLEE: A WIDE EYED YOUNG GIRL AND HER CUTE DOG IN WARREN, PENNSYLVANIA

GIRL AND DOG_0001

The pretty wide eyed young girl sitting in the wicker chair snuggling with her cute dog is named Jettie Offerle. Her name is listed on the reverse of the photograph. The child appears to be happy as she poses for the image. She has long hair and is wearing a plaid dress. Her dog appears to be a cocker spaniel or a poodle. The photograph was taken at the Savage studio in Warren, Pennsylvania. G. W. Savage was the photographer of this vintage photograph. His son, Charles A. Savage (1912-1972) was a noted photographer and taught photography at a college that became the Rochester Institute of Technology. Research disclosed that this child’s actual name was Jetta Offerlee. The 1900 US census reveals that Jetta lived with her mother, Lottie V, Offerlee and her sister and brother-in-law. The family lived in Warren. Lottie was born in Sweden and at the time of the census worked as a dressmaker.  The 1910 census found Jetta, age 21, still living in Warren but living as a boarder and working as a stenographer for an insurance company. Further research disclosed that Jetta married a man named Raymond S. Thorpe. She died at age 75 (1963) in Mount Lebanon, Pennsylvania.

EYES WIDE OPEN: BABY POSES IN ROCKING CHAIR IN EAST CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS

BABY

This vintage photograph features a baby posing in a rocking chair at the Cambridge Studio in East Cambridge, Massachusetts. The baby is wearing a gown and has a necklace around her neck. Her expression looks like she is trying to make sense out of the situation as she poses in front of the photographer. This portrait is unusual in that the photographer chose to produce an excessively close-up portrait.
