MOTHER, FATHER AND YOUNG DAUGHTER POSE FOR FAMILY PORTRAIT IN SUTTON, NEBRASKA

family

A young family is captured in this portrait by Soderberg studio in Sutton, Nebraska. The family is well dressed. The mother is an attractive woman and her daughter is adorable. The little girl stands in front of her parents, clearly front and center in the photograph. One could hazard a guess that she was also front and center in her parents lives. Pont Sonderberg is listed by the Sutton Historical Society as one of the town’s early photographers. Langdon Road, a historical directory of photographers, asserts that Soderberg operated a studio in Sutton between 1890 and 1905. In addition, the directory states that he had previously been in business during the 1880’s as Smith & Soderberg in Marengo, Iowa.

FOUR GRANDDAUGHTERS GATHER AROUND THEIR GRANDMA FOR A FAMILY PORTRAIT (1898)

FAMILY

This photograph presents an unidentified family portrait from an unidentified photographer and location. A message is written on the reverse of the photograph and it states “Wishing Grandma many happy returns, May 4, 1898”  It is likely that the four girls in this attractive family are sisters and that the older adult in the image is their grandmother, although she could possibly be their mother. The grandmother/mother is seated at a table and holding an open book. One of the girls has a magazine or newspaper on her lap.   She also is wearing a change purse on her belt. The sister behind her is wearing spectacles, possibly a pince nez.

FAMILY OF THREE IN OTTUMWA, IOWA

OTTOMWA FAMILYA young couple poses with their baby at the studio of White and Hugus in Ottumwa, Iowa. The couple are well dressed and the family is nicely posed for their portrait. The husband is sitting on an interesting and ornate seat (prop). The woman has her hand affectionately placed on her husband’s shoulder and the husband keeps a careful hold on the couple’s extremely alert baby. No information about the photographers was found in  preliminary research. The town of Ottumwa is in southeast Iowa. It was a coal mining town. The state mine inspector reported that there were  15 mine shafts in the town in 1889. From 1890 through 1892 an exhibition center was built in the town. It was called the Coal Palace. Perhaps the gentleman in this photograph was associated with the mining industry.

THE KEMMER FAMILY POSES FOR THEIR PORTRAIT IN LINCOLN, ILLINOIS

LINCOLN FAMILYThis cabinet card features a family portrait of a mother and father with their two adult sons and their young daughter. The family is well dressed. The father has a terrific beard and mustache.  All three men in the image display the chains from their pocket watches. The photograph was produced by the Tandy studio in Lincoln, Illinois. An inscription on the reverse of the image identifies one of the subjects as “Mr Fred Kemmer, 612 College Avenue, Lincoln, Illinois”. Research has provided some information about the family pictured in this cabinet card photograph. The father in this image is Mr.Fred Kemmer (1846-?). He was born in Germany. The mother in the photograph is Hannah Kemmer and she was six years the junior of her husband Fred. The 1880 US census finds Fred and Hannah living in Mount Pulaski, Illinois with two sons and a daughter. The children were named Fred (age 6), Ella (age 3) and Charles (age 2). The 1900 census notes that Fred and Hannah were living in Lincoln with a daughter named Lucy (age 14) and that Fred Sr.was listed as working as a “landlord”. The children seen in this photograph are likely Fred, Charles and Lucy. Research also revealed information about Fred W. Kemmer Jr. (1873-1944). He was born in Lincoln and died in Mt. Pulaski at age 71. He was educated  through the fourth grade. He was married in 1899 to Carrie Backle (1877-1951), who was a Nebraska native. Fred was a farmer. The 1900 census revealed that he lived in Mt. Pulaski with his wife and 8 month old daughter, Beattrice. He still lived in Mt. Pulaski at the time of the 1940 census. The photographer of this image is Walter S. Tandy. A large collection of glass plate negatives taken between 1880 and the early 1900’s is curated by the Lincoln Heritage Museum at Lincoln College in Lincoln. Tandy’s death, at age 83, is announced in the Bulletin of Photography (1918). Most people would guess that Lincoln, Illinois was named after Abraham Lincoln but few would surmise that the town received it’s name before Lincoln became President. The town was named Lincoln in 1853.  Abe Lincoln had practiced law in the town between 1847 and 1859.

FAMILY PORTRAIT IN DULUTH, MINNESOTA

duluth family_0003A well dressed family looks quite handsome as they pose for their portrait at the Christensen studio in Duluth, Minnesota. The father is wearing an unusual tie while the son is wearing a more traditional tie and a wing tipped collar shirt. The mother is wearing a pin on the neckline of her dress. The photographer of this cabinet card is John Christensen. The Bulletin of Photography (1916) reported that Christensen was one of several Duluth photographers who signed a petition urging the licensing of traveling photographers who passed through the city. The petition stated that these traveling photographers enlarged pictures at very low prices but then compelled people to purchase very expensive frames. They also charged customers in advance to enlarge family photos and then left town without doing the work or returning the treasured photographs.

PRETTY YOUNG MOTHER WITH TODDLER SON IN HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT

JOHNSTONE HARTFORD_0004A pretty young mother and her toddler son pose for their portrait at the Johnstone studio in Hartford, Connecticut. Mom is looking at the photographer with a suspicious expression while her son appears quite unhappy and terrified. Photography Journals of this era often contained articles about how to achieve the best photographs of children. Either this child was exceptionally difficult to distract or calm down, or Mr Johnstone was unfamiliar with the aforementioned literature. The 1903 Hartford directory lists Christopher Johnstone as a photographer located at 45 Pratt Street. Wilson’s Photographic Magazine (1904) reports that Johnstone was the President of the Photographers Association of New England.
