BEAUTIFUL PORTRAIT OF THREE SISTERS : F. BIXIO : BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA

This vintage real photo postcard features three sisters with beautiful smiles. The young woman posed in the center is holding a book. Interestingly, upon close examination, the book is actually a photographic journal called “Studio Light : Magazine of Information for the Photographer”. The photographer of this postcard portrait is Florencio Bixio. He was a talented photographer who operated photo studios in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was active between at least 1900 and 1930. He died in Buenos Aires in 1933. Bixio specialized in studio portraits, wedding portraits, and photos of entertainers. He also was a correspondent for the magazine “Caras and Caretas”, as well as a producer of photo postcards. Between 1900 and 1930 he opened photography studios in partnership with two other photographers. These studios were called “Bixio and Merlino” and Bixio and Castiglioni”. He was of Italian descent and emigrated to Argentina in 1896. He died in Buenos Aires in 1933. (SOLD)

A WINTERTIME FAMILY PORTRAIT IN WINDSOR, NEW YORK

This cabinet card features a family portrait taken in Windsor, New York. The family constellation appears to be composed of a father, mother, two adult sons, and a little girl who was likely an afterthought. The four older subjects are all holding their hats and the young girl has mittens hanging from her coat. The entire family is well-dressed. The photographer is listed as Conrad and the studio is listed as being located in Windsor, New York. However, the reverse of the image has a printed advertisement for the Binghamton Art Gallery, located at 493 Court Street, in Binghamton, New York. Windsor and Binghamton are about sixteen miles apart. Perhaps Conrad had studios in both towns. The 1900 U.S. census lists a photographer living in Binghamton named Edward E. Conrad. Note the confirming monogram on the center bottom of the cabinet card indicates that  the photographer’s initials are “E. E.”.  Edward Conrad (1857- ?) lived with his wife Susie, their three school age daughters, and a boarder.  Edward and Susie were married in 1887. The 1920 U. S. census discloses that at age 63, Edward was still a photographer, and owned his own gallery. He still lived with Susie (age 52), but his children no longer lived home. However, there was still child rearing to do in the Conrad home. The couple lived with their two and a half year-old grandchild. The reverse of this card has a line of glue residue on it’s top. The photograph has excellent clarity. Overall, this cabinet card is in very good condition (see scans).

A SOLDIER AND HIS FAMILY IN BREST, FRANCE

This vintage real photo postcard features a uniformed soldier and his family. He is wearing a pin with the number “253” on his collar. This likely indicates that he was in the 253rd regiment. Note the wrapping around the bottom of his pant legs. I wonder about the purpose of the wrap. The soldier’s wife looks almost out of the photo. She is stiff and and looks disconnected from her son and husband. The soldier’s son is wearing a navy style shirt. The soldier looks intense but proud. “Photo Pierre” is the name of the studio that produced this postcard. The photographer was located in Brest, France. SOLD

PORTRAIT OF A MOTHER AND THREE DAUGHTERS : WITH LONG LONG HAIR : CABINET CARD

This cabinet card portrait features a family of four posing for their portrait at an unidentified photo studio. Mom is wearing a dark dress with a veil. Is she in mourning? Note the length of the two oldest daughters hair. Their hair is quite long. to say the least. This cabinet card was found in a shop near Bethel, New York. The photo is from the earliest part of the cabinet card era. My hypothesis is that the photo dates back to sometime between the 1860’s and early to mid 1870’s. SOLD

PORTRAIT OF A FAMILY OF SEVEN IN RICHLAND CENTER, WISCONSIN

This cabinet card photograph features a lovely family of seven. Mom did not take long rest periods between each of her five children. The family dressed nicely for their trip to the photographer’s studio. The photographer of this cabinet card was the Hillman studio of Richland Center, Wisconsin.  The 1900 US census reports that William J. Hillman was a 51 year-old photographer, born in New York, and living in Richland Center with his wife Caroline (age 54) and his son Charles B. (age 22). Charles B.Hillman was listed as working as a photographer. The Photographic Times (1907) printed a paper read by Hillman. The paper was entitled ” The Successful Photographer” and the advice given in his presentation was excellent and would  be relevant and helpful to modern day business owners. If Hillman was alive today, he would have been an incredible business consultant. The Bulletin of Photography (1914) contains an announcement that the Hillman studio was sold to Frank Dickson. (SOLD)

AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN UNIFORMED OFFICER & HIS YOUNG DAUGHTER : WORLD WAR I : 1917 RPPC

This vintage real photo postcard features a uniformed Austro-Hungarian army soldier posing with his young child. I believe the soldier holds the rank of Corporal in the military. This photo was taken in 1917; during World War I. One can’t help but wonder what the impact of the war was on both father and child. This photo postcard has light corner wear and is in overall good condition (see scans).
