TWO FATHERS HELD HOSTAGE BY THEIR RIFLE WIELDING YOUNG SONS…. LARGE PASSIVE DOG

Despite the title of this entry, this photograph is far from a hostage situation. Instead, two dandies pose with their young children and a larger Retriever dog. Both children are holding rifles, presumably toy rifles. The identity of the photographer, the identity of the subjects, and the location of the studio, are unknown..This remarkable cabinet card portrait has excellent clarity and is in very good condition (see scans)

DAPPER & HANDSOME : SAMUEL E. LEIBOWITZ : PLAID SUIT & BOWLER HAT : JEWISH AMERICAN HISTORY

This vintage real photo postcard features a handsome young man named Samuel E. Leibowitz. He is certainly a dandy. Note his bowler hat, wide shirt collar, and his plaid suit. Samuel must have been happy about his appearance in this photograph. He was proud enough to send it to his friend, Louis Schwartz. This postcard brings up a lot of questions. What was Samuel Leibowitz’s story? Who was he and where was he ? What was his relationship to Louis Schwartz? Were Leibowitz and Schwartz recent immigrants to the United States? This postcard offers a glimpse into (presumably) Jewish American history. The Velox stamp box on the reverse of this photo postcard indicates that this postcard dates back to sometime between 1907 and 1914. This postcard is in very good condition (see scans).

PORTRAIT OF A HANDSOME AND STYLISH TOP HATTED DANDY IN MEADVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA

The gentleman featured in this cabinet card portrait is truly a dandy.  Like the definition of “dandy”, he appears to place much importance on physical appearance, good grooming, and fashion. Dandies tended to use refined language and engage in leisurely hobbies.  Another supposed characteristic of dandies is that although they exhibit an appearance of nonchalance, they were actually very self absorbed. The gentleman seen in this photograph is handsome, fashionable, and well groomed. Note his top hat. The photographer of this image is A. R. Fowler. He operated a studio in Meadville, Pennsylvania. This cabinet card has gold beveled edges, excellent clarity, and is in excellent condition (see scans).

SIX OF THE DANDIEST DANDIES YOU EVER DID SEE

This looks like a group photo at a “dandy convention”. The convention must be fun because these six gentlemen seem very jolly. The men are dressed identically except for their hats. Four of the men are wearing straw boaters. Note that the fellows are all wearing high collars, cummerbunds, and white shoes. My “dandy convention” theory is just an attempt at humor. More likely, these happy guys comprise a performing group. All but one of the men are young and handsome. The older gent (seated) is smoking a cigarette. If you are unfamiliar with the term “dandy”, here is a definition of the term. A dandy is a man that is inordinately devoted to style and fashion in their appearance and dress.
