PORTRAIT OF A FAMILY OF SEVEN IN RICHLAND CENTER, WISCONSIN

This cabinet card photograph features a lovely family of seven. Mom did not take long rest periods between each of her five children. The family dressed nicely for their trip to the photographer’s studio. The photographer of this cabinet card was the Hillman studio of Richland Center, Wisconsin.  The 1900 US census reports that William J. Hillman was a 51 year-old photographer, born in New York, and living in Richland Center with his wife Caroline (age 54) and his son Charles B. (age 22). Charles B.Hillman was listed as working as a photographer. The Photographic Times (1907) printed a paper read by Hillman. The paper was entitled ” The Successful Photographer” and the advice given in his presentation was excellent and would  be relevant and helpful to modern day business owners. If Hillman was alive today, he would have been an incredible business consultant. The Bulletin of Photography (1914) contains an announcement that the Hillman studio was sold to Frank Dickson. AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN UNIFORMED OFFICER & HIS YOUNG DAUGHTER : WORLD WAR I : 1917 RPPC

This vintage real photo postcard features a uniformed Austro-Hungarian army soldier posing with his young child. I believe the soldier holds the rank of Corporal in the military. This photo was taken in 1917; during World War I. One can’t help but wonder what the impact of the war was on both father and child. This photo postcard has light corner wear and is in overall good condition (see scans).

PORTRAIT OF A MOTHER AND HER TWO YOUNG DAUGHTERS IN CAMBERWELL, ENGLAND

camberwell

This vintage real photo postcard presents a portrait of a mother and her two young daughters. Some may claim that this is actually a portrait of three sisters. I’m sticking to my interpretation, though I recognize that my hypothesis is debatable. The two young children are cute and appear unintimidated by the photographer or the photographic process. The older daughter is holding some flowers. This photo postcard was produced by Moore’s Studio which was located in Camberwell, a district in South London, England. This vintage postcard is in very good condition (see scans).

FAMILY PORTRAIT : CHILD HOLDING DOLL : VINTAGE PHOTO : SAN PAOLO, BRAZIL (1932)

This vintage photograph is portrait of a handsome family. The children are adorable. One of the girls is holding a doll. The youngest child is sitting in a miniature chair. There is an inscription in the top left hand corner of the image. The inscription is written to “Aunt Emilia” and was written in San Paolo, Brazil, in 1932. The photographer of this photo is identified in a light embossed stamp that is barely visitble in the bottom right hand corner of the image. Proper magnification will likely result in identification of the photographer and studio. A look at the reverse of the image reveals that it was once a resident of a photo album. This photograph measures about 6 1/2″ x 9″ and is in very good condition (see scans). (SOLD)

PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG FAMILY IN MIFFLINBURG, PENNSYLVANIA

Young parents pose with their two children at the James Haus studio in Mifflinburg, Pennsylvania. Dad is wearing a three piece suit with a bow tie. Mom is wearing a dress with many buttons and a collar pin. Both Dad and Mom are wearing very serious expressions like so many photographer subjects did during the cabinet card era. Dad has a bushy mustache and Mom has wavy or curly hair. She holds her baby securely on her lap. The older child is making sure he is standing close to his father and has his hand resting lightly on father’s leg. The photographer of this portrait is James Haus. He appears in both the 1870 and 1880 US census as a photographer. He was born in 1842 and married to Mary Haus. The 1880 census indicates that the couple had two children. Haus served as a private in the civil war and he served as a musician. Part of his service was with the Fifth Pennsylvania Infantry. This cabinet card portrait is in very good condition (see scans). Note the butterfly design on the reverse of the photograph.

PORTRAIT OF A FAMILY OF FOUR IN TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA

This cabinet card features a lovely portrait of a well dressed family of four. Note the father’s neckwear. Is he wearing a bow tie or is it an ascot-like accessory. As per usual for this era, the father is sitting and the mother is standing. I wonder if the reason for this popular pose is that husbands tended to be taller than their wives and that taller people added undesirable empty space at the top of images. This photograph was taken at the studio of Eppert & Son. The business was located in Terre Haute, Indiana. Charles Eppert was born in Indiana in 1836. He was one of eleven children. At the age of 21, Charles was working in a grist mill. Sometime around 1859, he moved to Terre Haute. He learned photography there and established his studio in 1860 at 111 Wabash Street. In 1862, Charles married Mary C. Badgely (1840-1931). The couple had two children. Mary joined Charles in the photography business which is illustrated by the 1870 US census which lists both Charles and Mary as photographers. The 1880 census indicates that the couple’s son, George, went to work as an apprentice in the family studio.. Sometime in the 1880’s, George joined his father to form Eppert and Son, the studio that produced this cabinet card photograph. The 1920 census reveals that Charles, despite being in his eighties, was still working as a photographer. He died in 1923. In researching Charles, I found a web site (Indiana Album) that featured a beautiful photograph of an eclipse that Charles had taken. This family portrait cabinet card has excellent clarity and is in excellent condition (see scans). SOLD
