PORTRAIT OF A PRETTY AND FASHIONABLE YOUNG WOMAN IN KREFELD, GERMANY (CDV)

This carte de visite portrait features a a nicely dressed pretty young woman. The top of her dress is quite busy. It includes a high collar, lace trimming, and two wide ribbons. Her dress seems rather large for her figure. Perhaps she had recently lost a significant amount of weight. Another possibility is that she borrowed the dress from the studio’s wardrobe collection. Some photographer’s did in fact provided their subjects with clothing for their photographs. This photo was taken by Samson & Company. The studio operated in Krefeld, Germany. At the time of this writing, the Cabinet Card Gallery had three other German photographs that were taken by “Samson & Co.”. The other Samson photos were taken by studios located in three different German cities (Duisburg, Barmen, and Karlsruhe). I do not know if the four studios were independent of each other, or if they were all owned by the same individual. If they shared an owner, it would mean that “Samson & Son” was like the “Starbucks” of retail German photography. This cdv portrait is in good condition (see scans).

TWO PRETTY WOMAN WEARING KIMONOS : A CLOSE-UP VIEW

This vintage real photo postcard features two very pretty young women wearing kimono type dresses or robes. The fabric patterns are beautiful. Occasionally, I encounter cdv’s, cabinet cards, and postcards featuring women wearing kimonos. These early photographs document that kimono popularity in the western world was evident as early as the 1880’s. The postcard was published by “NPG” (Neue Photographische Gesellschaft) as part of a series (no. 208/4). The company was a leading bromide photo printing company for many years. A. G. Steglitz, is also noted as the publisher and this photo was published circa 1905 in Berlin, Germany. Note the initial “F. E. D.” at the bottom of the image. The initials stand for Friedrich Eyfried, the printer of this card. The company was located in Dusseldorf, Germany. This postcard is in good condition. Note the slight discoloration in and near the bottom left hand corner of the card.   SOLD

FIVE BEAUTIFUL YOUNG SIBLINGS IN DUREN, GERMANY

The parents of these five siblings must have been pleased when the photographer, Robert Ophoven, gave them this portrait. The children are beautiful, well dressed, and well posed. All three girls are wearing jewelry and their hair was carefully styled for this portrait. It is also interesting to note the intimacy between the three girls. the middle girl has an arm around the shoulders of one sister while her other arm is being grasped by her other sister. This image was photographed in Duren, Germany.  SOLD

GERMAN SOLDIER POSING IN FRONT OF A WAR PLANE (WORLD WAR II SNAPSHOT)

pilot plane It’s wartime. To be exact, this snapshot photograph features a World War II German soldier posing in front of a military airplane. I can not identify the name of the aircraft, though I would guess the plane is a bomber or transport plane. Note the decal of the stag near the nose of the plane. It looks similar to the John Deere logo (see images below). I wonder if the decal was on all planes of this model, or if it was placed on the plane by it’s crew. The snapshot is printed on AGFA Photopaper. The company was founded in Berlin, Germany in 1876. This image is on photo paper (AGFA-Brovira ) that was produced during WW II.  (SOLD)

PORTRAIT OF ACTRESS GERDA MAURUS AND HER AIREDALE

cuban milkman 4

cuban milkman 5 The lovely actress seen in this vintage real photo postcard is named Gerda Maurus (1903-1968). She is posed next to a beautiful Airedale terrier. This unusual profile photograph was taken by celebrity photographer Alex Binder. His studio was located in Berlin, Germany. Maurus was active in film and television between 1928 and 1968. She was an Austrian actress of Croatian descent. Maurus was the daughter of an engineer/inventor. She grew up in Vienna and received training as a singer and dancer. She hit the stage at age fifteen. The IMDb biography of Maurus describes her as ” a strikingly beautiful blonde with high cheekbones an expressive blue eyes”. She began her career on the stages of Vienna. She was “discovered” by director Fritz Lang and he cast her in the female lead in the silent film “Spione” (1928). Lang was smitten by maurus and his marriage was destroyed. She then appeared in a number of German films during the Weimar and Nazi eras. Maurus married director Robert A. Stemmie in 1937. He directed her in  “Daphne and the Diplomat” (1937). Like many actresses of her time, her acting career was hurt by the introduction of “talkies”. Further complicating matters was her nebulous association with Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels. This relationship had negative impact on her career after World War II. Due to lack of film offers, Maurus retreated to the German stage. The IMDb filmography of Gerda Maurus lists 33 credits. Here is a side note about Airedales. The first World War increased the popularity of Airedales because they became famous for their bravery on the battlefield. In the US, Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, and Warren Harding all owned Airedales. In the 1920’s, Airedales became the most popular dog in the US. This postcard was published by Ross Verlag and is part of a series (no. A1320/1).  (SOLD)

The photographer was Max Seifert. He operated a studio in Freiberg, Germany. Freiberg is a town located in the the Free State of Saxony, Germany.  (SOLD)
