This vintage real photo postcard features a fashionable teenage girl posing for her photographic portrait at A. Cara’s studio in Fassano, Italy. The girl is resting an open book on the back of a chair. She is identified as Lina Carasso. Her portrait was taken in July, 1920. This real photo postcard is in very good condition (see scans). The pretty costumed blonde actress featured in this real photo postcard is Edy Vayland. She is wearing a fantastic headdress. This portrait is a bit risque for it’s era. Preliminary research revealed little information about this Belle Epoque theatre actress. One source labelled her a burlesque actress. The postcard is from the 1910’s and was published in Italy by A. Traldi from the city of Milan. Traldi operated in Milan from 1902-1918. The publisher concentrated on view cards of Europe and the Middle East. They are also known for a series published that focused on dogs. Research reveals that they produced a number of postcard portraits of European stage performers. Miss Vayland’s photograph was taken by the Badodi studio in Milan. This real photo postcard portrait is in excellent condition (see scans). SOLD
This vintage Italian real photo postcard features a pretty and fashionable woman and her elegant greyhound. She is holding the leash tightly. The woman is wearing four flowers on her jacket. Perhaps she was at a dog show and the photo was taken after the competition. The message on this postcard was written in 1941. This postcard is in very good condition (see scans). ADDENDUM: A visitor has corrected me about the dog’s breed. The dog is a Borzoi and not a Greyhound.

This vintage 1930’s photo postcard features three contestants in the Miss Europe contest. Most of the women in the competition had won national beauty contests in their own country and progressed to the Miss Europe contest as a warm-up to competing for the Miss World title. This photographic postcard presents Miss France, Miss Belgium, and Miss Italy. The three contestants are beautiful and marvelously dressed. This postcard was published by Alfred Noyer. His Paris studio operated between 1910 and the 1940’s. He was very talented and well respected. This vintage postcard is in very good condition (see scans). SOLD

The reverse of the card has the stamp of Milan photographer Attilio Badodi (1880-1967). He was a talented and very successful photographer of European celebrities. His photos immortalized many actors and actresses. He also did portraits of Benito Mussolini. The stamp box on this postcard indicates that it was published by K Ltd. sometime between 1918 and 1936. This vintage real photo postcard features Italian stage and film actress, Mimi Aylmer (also spelled Almieri) (1896-1992). She was a star during Italy’s fascist era. Aylmer was born in Rome. Her family was of the bourgeois class. At age seventeen, she made her debut as a chanteuse (female nightclub singer of popular songs). Shortly after her debut, she was hired by the Riviste Papa stage company. In 1914, she launched her film career. She starred in her first film and remained a major star for more than twenty years (until 1936). After World War II, she played character roles in two films before retiring from the entertainment world in 1959. In 1964, she moved to Bologna where she lived in a rest home for entertainment artists. The IMDb reports that Aylmer has twelve film credits ranging from 1914 to 1951. As this photo postcard demonstrates; Miss Aylmer was a pretty woman. She has an aura of sweetness and a nice half smile. This vintage real photo postcard captures an attractive young woman leaning against a column. This pose was likely borrowed from the art world. There are a number of paintings from the last century and before, that feature woman near, or leaning on columns. This photograph was taken in front of a studio seaside backdrop. The woman in this photo is flashing a somewhat sheepish smile. This postcard was mailed in 1952 between two Italian towns. The card was published by Bromofoto which was located in Milan. This postcard measures about 4″ x 6″ and is in very good condition.

This cabinet card portrait features stage performer, Alessandro Alexander Salvini (1861-1896). The photographer of this image is the famed celebrity photographer Napoleon Sarony. The eccentric and talented Mr Sarony, operated a studio in New York City. Sarony photographed a large number of actors and actresses appearing in New York theater. Alexander Salvini, as he was known in America, was born in Italy. His father, Tomasso Salvini was an esteemed tragedian actor. His grandfather also appeared on the stage. Alexander wanted to become an actor too, but his father steered him toward a different career. Alexander decided to become a sailor and after several voyages decided to switch careers. He enrolled in school to become a civil engineer. After receiving his degree in 1881, he came to America with an actor friend. Alexander’s intent was to find a job with a railroad, but instead, he spent a year traveling with his friend, assisting him, learning fencing and English. In 1882, he went to New York City to begin an acting career. He made his debut that same year, appearing in a play with actress Clara Morris. When Salvini’s father heard about his son’s success, he responded with an unsupportive cable stating “How dare you, sir, go on the stage without my permission”. Remember, the younger Salvini was 21 years old at the time of his debut. He replied to his father that he didn’t ask his father’s permission, because he knew his request would be denied. After his debut, Salvini hit the road with a traveling theater company and remained touring for two years. In 1885, Tomasso Salvini arrived in America for a tour. He hired Alexander as the stage manager and part-time actor. After traveling with his father’s company, Alexander started his own theater company. In 1886 he appeared in a series of plays at the Union Square Theater. His father returned to America in 1889 and Alexander joined his tour. When the tour ended, he went with is father to Italy. After a brief vacation, Alexander returned to America with a large amount of his father’s wardrobe which had been accumulated over many years. He also brought swords and armor from hid dad’s collection. Alexander and his company launched a new American tour and Salvini played a number of roles including Shakespearian parts. In the early 1890’s he married Maude Dixon, the leading lady in his company. Alexander had roles in two Broadway plays, “Partners” (1888) and “A Child of Naples” (1890). He is very well known for his role in “The Three Musketeers”. In 1896, he became ill with “organic trouble” and after four months of being bed bound, he died. A Sarony cabinet card portrait of Alexander Salvini can be found in the Museum of the City of New York. This cabinet card portrait comes from the collection of Brown Brothers. The firm was the first stock photo agency. It was established in 1904. It built an archive of over one million photographs and negatives. This cabinet card is in good condition (see scans)

This carte de visite portrait features a very cute little boy and his cute little dog. The child has his arm affectionately wrapped around the dog. Both the boy and his dog are sitting on a bench. The child is very well dressed. He is wearing a terrific cap. Advertising on the reverse of the cdv indicates that the photograph was taken at the Arena studio in Napoli (Naples), Italy.
