This Cabinet Card subject is a military sharpshooter photographed by Heath of Bangor, Maine. The soldier is wearing medals including one that names him as a sharpshooter. The other medals include one representing Sons of Union Veterans. He also appears to be wearing Medical Maltese Crosses on his collar. The Boys are Back in Town: Three Farm Boys in Chenoa, Illinois
The boys have come to town to pose for this Cabinet card at the studio of Besett and Phillips in Chenoa, Illinois. Note their terrific hats, suspenders and boots. Chenoa is in Central Illinois and was founded in 1854 to provide a retail and trade center for farm tenants. A grain shipping facility was also built for this area which is noted for having some of the finest soil for farming in the entire world.

Bernard Roelker: Esteemed Lawyer and Friend of Longfellow
Bernard Roelker (1816-1888)) led an active life in Literature and Law. He attended the University of Bonn on the Rhine where he studied law. He came to the United States in the late 1830’s. He settled in Bridgeport, Connecticut and privately taught German and Music. He then went to Harvard and became friends with Henry Longfellow who was a professor there. Roelker became friends with a number of literary luminaries. He taught at Harvard and renewed his study of the law. He then practiced law in Boston and later moved to New York City where he started the law firm of Laur and Roelker. He built a large practice, especially among the Germans of the city. He was expert at wills and contracts. He argued an important case, Meyer vs Roosevelt, in front of the United States Supreme Court in 1863. It was the first legal tender case heard before the court and Roelker won the decision. Roelker and his friend Samuel Tilden organized the Prairie du Chien Railroad in Wisconsin. Tilden ran for President in 1876. Roelker never married. The photographer of this Cabinet card portrait is the famous photographer Sarony of New York City. The photograph is dated November, 1879.
Great Mustache in Plainfield, New Jersey
This gentleman has a mustache worthy of adding to the esteemed category of “mustaches (Only The Best” ) in this blog. He is posing for his portrait at the studio of Fisher & Monfort in Plainfield, New Jersey. Does anyone know anything about the pin he is wearing on his lapel? Plainfield was originally settled by Quakers, became a township in 1847, and the New Jersey legislature made it a city in 1869. The city is located in Northeastern New Jersey. Russian Educator in St. Petersburg
This Cabinet card photo is of a Russian teacher or administrater of a Learning Institution founded under the auspices of Emperor Alexander I or Emperor Nicholas I, circa 1900. The photographer is Alexander Semenenko Photo Studio in St. Petersburg. The reverse of the card has images of two awards in photography exhibitions of 1883 and 1889.
“It’s Miller Time”: Three Guys Having a Beer in Milwaukee, Wisconsin
This Cabinet card depicts three guys out for a beer. They look like they are going to do some serious drinking and have a pitcher ready on the floor for refilling their glasses. The photograph was taken by F. W. Streit of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. How appropriate! Milwaukee is and was the unofficial beer capitol of the United States. The city was once the home to four of the world’s largest breweries and was the number one beer producing city in the world for many years.

Amazing Mustache in Waterville, Maine
The gentleman pictured in this Cabinet card has a mustache of distinction. In my years of collecting Cabinet cards I have yet to find a mustache quite as impressive as this one. Preble and Jordan of Waterville, Maine is the photographic studio where this picture was taken. Waterville is located in south central Maine. Early industries included fishing, lumbering, agriculture and ship building. There was also a waterpower company established and a number of mills.
