MONA MARTENSON : POPULAR SWEDISH STAGE AND FILM ACTRESS

This vintage real photo postcard features pretty actress Mona Martenson (1902-1956) as she appears in the film, “Inmarsarvet” (1925). Translated into English, the film is titled “Ingmar’s Inheritance”. The movie is a Swedish silent drama film and was directed by Gustaf Molander and produced by Nord-Westi Film. Mona was 23 years-old when the postcard photo was taken. Martenson was an active performer from 1923 through 1949, appearing in 29 films. Mona was raised in Helsingborg and studied at the Royal Dramatic Theater Academy. She made her first film appearance in 1923. That same year, Mona and a classmate were selected by the school to audition for celebrated Swedish film director, Mauritz Stiller. Incidentally, you may be familiar with her classmate. Her name was Greta Garbo. Both Martenson and Garbo were cast in his upcoming film. The film was very successful and Mona and Greta were invited to Hollywood. Martenson was not interested in leaving Sweden, and turned down a contract offer from Louis B. Mayer. She remained in Stockholm and acted in theater and film. In 1929, Mona spread her wings and starred in a German film and in a Norwegian film. Mona was able to cross the “sound barrier” and appear in a number of “talkie” films. Her last film was “Pippi Longstocking” (1949). She played the supporting role of Pia. The photographer of Martenson’s portrait seen on this postcard was Axel Eliassons Konstforlag. He operated a studio, and then a postcard publishing company in Stockholm. The company was named “Axel Eliasson’s Art Publishers (AE) and began selling postcards in 1890. The company was Sweden’s leading producer of postcards during the first half of the twentieth century. In the middle of the 1890’s, Jenny Nystrom and Anna Palm were hired as illustrators. The company specialized in illustrated Christmas cards. Eliasson died in 1932. In 1941, the company was sold and underwent several name changes. The company still exists today, under the name “Axel Eliasson AB” and is located in Sagmyra, Sweden. It no longer publishes postcards. Instead it produces art publishing items (ie Christmas cards and gift items). This vintage postcard is in very good condition (see scans).

PORTRAIT OF AN ADORABLE TRIO OF LITTLE GIRLS PERFORMING A CHARITY CONCERT (1906)

This vintage real photo postcard features three precious little girls performing a charity concert. The girl’s musical instruments include a squeeze box, a pipe, and a violin. I hope I identified the instruments correctly as my knowledge of such things is limited. In fact, I would settle for accurately identifying two out of three of the musical instruments. The photographer of this image used some interesting props. Note the music stand, sheet music, and the sign stating “Charity Concert”. I particularly like the violinist’s hat. I could imagine a present day blues player wearing such a hat. This postcard was published by the Rapid Photo Printing Company. The company existed between 1901 and 1910. It was located in London. The company is best known for their portraits of actresses. The card was part of the “Real Silverprint Photograph Series (no.2728). This English postcard was postmarked in 1906. The card is addressed to someone at the “Semore Convalescent Home”. This vintage postcard is in very good condition (see scans).

SWEET GYPSY WOMAN (RPPC)

“From nowhere through a caravan. Around the campfire light. A lovely woman in motion. With hair as dark as night. Her eyes were like that of a cat in the dark. That hypnotized me with love. She was a gypsy woman.” This vintage real photo postcard features a pretty gypsy woman holding a tambourine. She is wearing flowers in her hair, large hoop earrings, and a beautiful smile. The lyrics in quotes above are from a 1970 song written by Curtis Mayfield and sung by Brian Hyland. The song is named “Gypsy Woman”. I would be remiss to not point out that the woman in this portrait postcard may not be a gypsy at all. Instead, she may be a non gypsy woman wearing a traditional folk costume from whatever country she hails from. (SOLD)

ONE OF “THE BOYS IN THE BAND” IN SHELBYVILLE, ILLINOIS

The gentleman featured in this cabinet card is clearly a member of a band. He is wearing a band uniform and holding his trombone. Note his cap and bow tie. The studio which produced this image was Babb’s Ground Floor Gallery in Shelbyville, Illinois. James A. Babb (1855-?) and Jacob P. Babb (1857-1908) were the proprietors of Babb’s photographic studio. James was a native of Missouri and worked on a farm until 1879 when he came to Sullivan, Illinois and worked in a photographic gallery. He then returned to Missouri (Jefferson City) and worked for a photographer named S. Winans. He then moved to Shelbyville where he worked several years in the grocery business until he and his brother Jacob, established a Photography business. James Babb married Miss Mollie E. Oliver of Shelbyville. Jacob Babb was also a Missouri native and started his work life as a farmer. At age twenty-four he began working in the lumber industry and in 1883 he began a career in photography with the same S. Winans previously mentioned. His next job change occurred when he partnered with his brother in the Shelbyville gallery. In 1887 Jacob married Miss Anna Sampson of Shelbyville. The major source of information concerning the Babb brothers was the “Illinois Genealogy Trails” section on Shelby County. SOLD

PRETTY TEENAGE GIRL AND HER ACCORDION

This vintage photograph features a pretty teenage girl and her accordion. She has bright eyes and a lovely smile. She is casting a shadow on the wall behind her. The shadow enhances the photograph by providing interesting contrast. Hopefully, a visitor to the Cabinet Card Gallery, will be able to identify the Maker and Model of this musical instrument, and leave an informative comment. I can identify the words “Concerto”, “Melodija”, and possibly “Hohner”, on the instrument, This photo of this lovely musician and her accordion, was found in Serbia. I can not decipher the inscription on the reverse of the photograph. The scallop edged photograph measures about 5 1/4″ x 3 1/4″ and is in very good condition (see scans).

“THATS ENTERTAINMENT”: A PRECIOUS LITTLE GIRL AND HER ACCORDION

This vintage photo postcard captures a most adorable wide-eyed little girl sitting on a wooden chair and holding an accordion. The girl’s expression is precious. She seems happy to be posing for this photograph. She is sitting in front of a collection of her toys including a nutcracker man, a dog on wheels, and a doll. The accordion has the logo of the Cucciolo company. This company operated in Italy and this postcard is likely of Italian origin and produced in the 1930’s.
