This vintage real photo postcard features the Oriental Hotel, which was located in Dallas, Texas. The street scene includes a working trolley. The hotel opened in 1893 and was referred to as “Field’s Folly” because of it’s extravagant elegance. Field was a real estate man active in Dallas in the 1870’s through the 1890’s. He was also a talented promoter of his city. The hotel was demolished in 1924 to clear the way for the construction of a new hotel. This postcard was published by Davidson Brothers as part of a series (no.1189 A). The card was postmarked in Dallas in 1912. SOLD
This vintage real photo postcard presents a portrait of a mother and her two young daughters. Some may claim that this is actually a portrait of three sisters. I’m sticking to my interpretation, though I recognize that my hypothesis is debatable. The two young children are cute and appear unintimidated by the photographer or the photographic process. The older daughter is holding some flowers. This photo postcard was produced by Moore’s Studio which was located in Camberwell, a district in South London, England. This vintage postcard features a view of the steamboat landing in Huntington Harbor, Long Island, New York. In addition to the two steamboats seen at the landing; there are a number of other boats visible in the busy Harbor. The steamboats carried passengers to New York City, Connecticut, and other places. This postcard was published by Photo & Art Postal Card Company as part of a series (No.14). The firm was located in New York City. The message on the reverse includes the writer’s phone number. It only uses three digits. The card was postmarked in Northport, New York. It was postmarked in 1928. Note that the card has a bit of wrinkling in it’s top left hand corner. SOLD
Look who’s riding into town! Its the Roberts brothers. Someone better go get the sheriff. George and Paul Roberts are spoken about in the same conversations that occur about such criminal brothers as Jesse and Frank James, and Jim, Cole, John, and Bob Younger. This vintage real photo postcard featuring the Roberts brothers, shows them with their “game face” on. They may be small in stature but they were scary dudes. Enough with the horse s**t. This real photo postcard is actually quite interesting. These boys look comfortable on their horses. The kids are on large horses, not small ponies reserved for inexperienced child riders.They appear to know what they are doing. One of the boys has a whip. No cowboy hats for these guys. One is wearing a wide brim bowler while the other is sporting a cap. Note the dirt streets. The town may actually be a frontier town in the “old west”. Also take notice of the boy standing on the sidewalk. He seems truly interested in the horseback riders, or perhaps, the photographer. The young bystander is wearing knickers. The AZO stamp box on this postcard reveals that it was likely published sometime between 1904 and 1918. The cameraman was a studio photographer who was willing to take difficult photographs in the outdoors. This vintage real photo postcard is in very good condition (see scans).

This vintage real photo postcard features a serious looking wedding couple. The bride is holding a bouquet of flowers and the groom is wearing a boutonniere. The bride looks very young, significantly younger than the groom. The stamp box on this postcard indicates that it was published by K Ltd., sometime between 1918 and 1936. The postcard has excellent clarity and is in very good condition (see scans).

This vintage real photo postcard features two brindle terriers. They appear to be Jack Russell terriers. They are beautifully posed. This postcard was published by Valentine & Sons as part of their Real Photo Animal Series (no.RP.18). The Valentine and Sons printing company was founded in Dundee, Scotland in 1851. The founder was James Valentine (1815-1879). The company became the leading manufacturer of picture postcards in Scotland. After James died, his two sons operated the business. The company was purchased by John Waddington Limited in 1963, In 1980, the Valentine business was bought by Hallmark Cards. In 1994, the company ceased operations. This card was printed in Great Britain. (SOLD)
Fay Compton (1894-1978) is the subject of this vintage real photo postcard. Compton was an English actress who appeared in many films, but was best known for her stage performances. She was a versatile actress who appeared in Shakespeare, Modern Drama, Comedy, and Classics (ie Ibsen and Chekhov. She appeared on stage in Britain, and toured the United States and Australia. Compton was born in London. Her father, mother, brother, and grandfather were all actors. She was the younger sister of actress Viola Comton. Compton’s stage debut was in 1911 with Pelissier’s Follies which was produced by H. G. Pelissier. Though still a teenager, she married Mr. Pelissier who died soon thereafter, leaving her with a child. She quickly married singer Lauri de Frece. Compton’s first American appearance was in 1914 and occurred at the Shubert Theatre in New York. In 1917, she played the title role in the London performances of Peter Pan. In the 1920’s and 1930’s she performed in many of Shakespeare’s plays. She also played in a number of plays written by J. M. Barrie. Barrie wrote the play, “Mary Rose” especially for her. Her second husband died in 1921 and in 1923, she married actor Leon Quartermaine. During the 1930’s she played in both West End plays and Shakespeare. The 1940’s and 1950’s found Compton continuing to play in Shakespeare productions, and other roles including Noel Cowards “Blithe Spirit”, “The Importance of Being Earnest”, “Uncle Vanya”, and “What Every Woman Knows”. In 1942, her third marriage failed and she married actor Ralph Michael. Their marriage dissolved after four years. Compton also appeared in films. Her IMDb filmography reveals that she appeared in 82 films between 1914 and 1970. The IBDb indicates that she performed in three Broadway shows between 1915 and 1959. At one point, Compton had her own drama school. One of her students was actor Alec Guinness.
Postcard 1 Miss Compton’s portrait on this postcard was taken by Rita Martin, a well known celebrity photographer. The card was published by J. Beagles Postcards as part of a series (no.258.8). The company produced a variety of postcards including an extensive catalog of celebrity (stage and screen) portrait postcards. The company closed in 1939. The card was postmarked in 1920. SOLD
Postcard 2 was printed in Britain and was part of the Lilywhite Photographic Series (no. L 4). Miss Compton looks absolutely beautiful . She is wearing a pretty dress and a beaded necklace (pearls?). The publisher, Lilywhite Ltd, Halifax (L.L.H.), was founded by Arthur Frederick Sergeant. He also was the founder of Halifax Photographic Company which was based in Halifax, England. Lilywhite began publishing postcards in 1910; and in the 1920’s, the company took over Arrow Series Postcards. The company then published postcards under both the Arrow and Lilywhite names. SOLD
This vintage real photo postcard features Diana Dors (1931-1984). English film and television and singer. Diana began her film career by being promoted as a “blonde bombshell”. She was marketed as an English version of Marilyn Monroe. She maintained her image by appearing in sex film-comedies and risque modeling. As her career progressed, it was apparent that she actually had talent. She had success as a television actress, singer, cabaret peformer, and frequent talk show guest. She also showed acting prowess in some of her latter films. Upon birth, her name was Diana Fluck. When she began her film career, she was encouraged to change her last name. As she explained, there was concern that if her name was in lights , one of the letters could go out, causing embarassment. At the age of 14, she began studies at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. A year later, she signed a contract with the J. Arthur Rank Organization and began appearing in films. By 1949, Diana was taking on leading roles. In 1956, Dors signed a contract with RKO to act in a movie with George Gobel. In 1958, the studio canceled the contract stating that Dors had become an “object of disgrace” for her off screen behavior. Dors had a problematic social life. This postcard was likely issued sometime between 1956 and 1958. She liked hosting parties and did so regularly. It was important that she made the tabloid headlines to keep her glamorous and sex star reputation. Her first husband exploited her for money and influence. After Dors death, biographers and friends stated that her husband would loan her out sexually to producers and leading actors on condition they put her in their films. She was known to have a number of affairs with the likes of Rod Steiger and other movie people. At one point, she was married to Richard Dawson, the actor/comedian associated with “Hogans Heroes”, “Match Game” and “Family Feud”. She had a total of three marriages. Dors filmography appearing in IMDR states that she had 100 film credits. This postcard was published by International Press in the mid 1950’s. (SOLD)

The postcard was published by RotoPhot. The stamp box indicates that the company was part of the NBC price cartel. (SOLD)
This vintage real photo postcard (Postcard 2) features beautiful German silent film actress, Ally Kolberg. Her movie career was brief. She appeared in films between 1916 and 1923 and they included 16 German films and 1 Swedish production. She was often directed by female directors. During her career she was also credited as Ally Bing and Ally Kay Bing. Initial research revealed very little about the life of Miss Kolberg. More intensive investigation is required. This postcard was published by Rotophot, which began publishing “RPH” postcards sometime around 1916. This postcard is part of a series (no 4794/3). The production of film star postcards was continued by the Ross Verlag company who’s origins can be traced back to the earlier Rotophot postcard company. This postcard has a Bavarian stamp and is postmarked from Weilheim, Bavaria.
* The second postcard (Postcard 3) features a real photo portrait of Miss Kolberg. She is dressed in a more subdued fashion in this photograph than in the first postcard. She is wearing “every day” clothing compared to the high fashion, attention grabbing style seen in the first postcard. In this photo, Ally is posed clasping her hands and looking dreamingly toward heaven. The backdrop behind her could be viewed as sky. As in the first postcard, Miss Kolberg is quite beautiful. This postcard was also, like the first, published by Rotophot and has the “RPH” logo. The message on the reverse of the postcard dates the card to 1913. This date is a bit earlier than when some sources believe RPH began publishing postcards. The sources are close, but incorrect. This postcard was part of a series (no. 3697/5). (SOLD)
* Ally Kolberg is the subject of this third vintage real photo postcard (Postcard 4). Miss Kolberg’s beauty is apparent in this photograph. She is wearing a long translucent veil and an alluring smile. The stamp box of this postcard has an interesting story. “NBC” (Neue Bromsilber Convention) was a price cartel established in 1909 that continued until the 1930’s. The purpose of the cartel was to ensure that the minimum price charged for postcards was kept at a sufficiently profitable level. A number of postcard publishing companies joined the cartel in an effort to stave off the effect of competition on the pricing of postcards. This postcard is part of a series (no. 119/1). The logo for the motion picture company “Film Sterne” can be seen in the lower left hand corner of the postcard. The photo studio that took this photograph was Becker & Maas. This vintage real photo postcard features a smiling baby sitting on a fur covered chair. The child is not sitting on the seat unsecured. The baby is likely sitting on his mother’s lap. Mom is hidden from our view. It is also possible that the baby is being held in place by a brace hidden by his gown. An inscription on the reverse of the card reveals that the child’s name is Vernon Walker. This postcard has an AZO stamp box which indicates that the card dates back to between 1904 and 1918.
