FOUR ADORABLE SCHOOL GIRLS ON THE MOVE IN AGEN, FRANCE (1946)

school kids Four adorable school girls are captured by an amateur photographer in Agen, France. The girls are carrying their school books and they appear to be quite happy. In the background, it is evident that the sidewalk is filled with pedestrians. An inscription on the reverse of the snap shot indicates that this photo was taken in 1945. It is interesting to note that World War II ended in 1945, no more than a year before this photograph was shot. Agen is located in southwestern France and is beside the Garonne River. The city is 85 miles southeast of Bordeaux. This photo measures about 3 1/2″ x 2 5/8″ and is in excellent condition.  SOLD

HAUNTING PHOTOGRAPH OF NORTH AFRICAN MAN AND HIS DAUGHTER

refugee This photograph of a North African man and his daughter is one of the most moving photos that I have ever seen. This image pulls at my heart strings and won’t let go. I know very little about the story behind this photo. I assume that we are looking at a father and daughter. Each is displaying an expression of grave concern. In fact, they look traumatized. The previous owner of this photograph stated that the photo was taken in North Africa during a time of war. The image is a snapshot and measures about 4 1/4″ x 3 1/4″. The photograph is in very good condition (see scans).

A MAN AND HIS DOG SITTING ON THE FRONT PORCH NEAR AUSTIN, TEXAS (SNAPSHOT)

This vintage snapshot photograph features a man and his dog sitting on his front porch. There is a bench on the porch and there appears to be a blanket hanging on a clothes line. His house is made of wood. There is a jar on the ground in front of the porch. The vegetation in front of the porch suggests that the house is located in a dry climate. The photo was obtained in the Hill Country outside of Austin, Texas. Paper residue on the reverse of the photo indicate that it is a refugee from a photo album. The photograph is in very good condition (see scans).  (SOLD)

AFRICAN AMERICAN LITTLE GIRL BASKING IN THE SUNLIGHT

This snapshot features an African American little girl asking in the sunlight. She has a lovely smile. The child is wearing a sailor outfit and has a bow in her hair. She is standing on a cement sidewalk in front of a large building. Note her shadow, which appears on the column behind her. Judging by the architecture, this photo was likely taken in a city or a large town.  The photograph measures about 4 1/4″ x 2 1/2″.   (SOLD)

BRITISH CHAP RIDING HIS DOUGLAS MOTORCYCLE (1920’S)

An Arlo Guthrie song has the following lyrics. “I don’t want a pickle. Just want to ride on my motorcycle. And I don’t want a tickle. Cause I’d rather ride on my motorcycle.” Motorcyclists often have a passionate relationship with their bikes and riding, Perhaps the chap in this vintage snapshot shares that same enthusiasm. This photo features a middle aged or older motor cyclist. His bike has a British (Bristol) license plate and was manufactured by the Douglas company. Douglas was a British motorcycle manufacturer that operated from 1907 through 1957. The company was based in the city of Bristol.  Interestingly, the company also built cars in its early days (1913-1922). This photograph measures about 3 3/8″ x 2 3/8″.  I believe that this photograph is from the 1920’s.  (SOLD)

PORTRAIT OF TWO MEN AT THEIR HAM RADIO STATION

This vintage snapshot features two enthusiastic men manning their ham radio station. The large desk that these men are sharing hosts numerous electronic devices. The electrical wires that power this station seems to be jerry rigged. It appears to be an electricity nightmare and I doubt this amateur set-up would pass an official fire or electronic inspection. Note the telephone, table radio and typewriter captured in this photograph. These two ham radio operators seem to be having a good time pursuing their hobby. It is possible that the men are actually at work and performing their duties utilizing the radio. The poor, and possibly dangerous wiring, leads me to believe that the men are amateurs and that this ham radio station is a home set-up.   SOLD

MEET THE PIN BOYS: OCCUPATIONAL SNAPSHOT TAKEN AT A BOWLING ALLEY

 

This snapshot captures three pin boys as they work at a bowling alley. Pin boys, also known as pin setters were stationed in a sunken area of a bowling alley which was located behind the pins. The pin boy removed pins after they were knocked down, replaced pins each frame, and returned the bowlers ball. The day of pin boys is long over as automation and computers became employed in bowling alleys. At least two of the young men in this photo are smoking while they are working. The pin boys are wearing tee shirts, presumably because they were exerting themselves in a hot environment. Being a pin boy doesn’t look like a fun job.

SNAPSHOT OF A LOVELY COUPLE IN FRONT OF A BEACH HOUSE

Some couple look like they belong together and the pair in this snapshot are one of those couples. This is a handsome couple. They are posing in their bathing suits in front of a quaint beach house. She is wearing a pioneering bikini and he is wearing an unbuttoned casual shirt displaying part of his bare chest. She is holding a swimming cap. In the background you can see the boardwalk that is between the house and the beach. One can also observe the beach vegetation. In addition, there appears to be beach chairs, or some kind of rack, close behind this romantic couple. The scene reminds me of the beach houses on Fire Island, though this photograph could have been taken at many beach communities along the US east or west coast. This snapshot likely dates back to the 1930’s or 1940’s.  (SOLD)

MEET THE NIGHT CREW: THREE MILITARY RADIOMEN IN HAWAII

Three handsome military men pose in front of the radio shack for this snapshot portrait. The soldiers look like their having a great time. The man in the middle has a cigarette hanging out of his mouth. He looks like he’s playing a part in a World War II movie. Judging by the inscription on the reverse of the photograph, these guys are not in a war zone. In fact, the use of the word “Aloha” probably indicates that they are located in Hawaii. They are likely radiomen who worked the night shift which is logical since they are posing by the “Radio Night Crew’ sign seen above the shack’s door. This photograph was likely inscribed to, and sent to, “Arnolds” girlfriend. Along with the snapshot, the inscriber sent his “smiles” and “love and kisses”.  SOLD
