PORTRAIT OF AN OLDER AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMAN (1917)

An older African American woman poses for her photograph at an unknown studio in an unknown location. The woman projects and image of wisdom, warmth, and amiableness. An inscription of the reverse this vintage real photo postcard reveals that the photo was taken in 1917. The AZO stamp box confirms the date since it indicates that the postcard was published during that period (1904-1918). Photo postcards of African Americans, that are in good condition, are not all that common. This postcard has great clarity and is in very good condition (see scans).

AFRICAN AMERICAN LITTLE GIRL BASKING IN THE SUNLIGHT

This snapshot features an African American little girl asking in the sunlight. She has a lovely smile. The child is wearing a sailor outfit and has a bow in her hair. She is standing on a cement sidewalk in front of a large building. Note her shadow, which appears on the column behind her. Judging by the architecture, this photo was likely taken in a city or a large town.  The photograph measures about 4 1/4″ x 2 1/2″.   (SOLD)

PHOTOGRAPH OF THE FINALISTS OF THE MISS BLACK OHIO BEAUTY PAGEANT (1976)

This vintage photograph features a portrait of the finalists of the Miss Black Ohio Beauty Pageant of 1976. The contest was hosted by the Bel-Aire Civic Club. All six of the African American women in this photograph are quite pretty but there could only be one winner and you can identify her by the crown on her head. This 8″ x 10″ image is likely a press photo.   SOLD

POTRAIT OF AN AFRICAN AMERICAN FAMILY STANDING IN FRONT OF THEIR HOUSE IN THE TEXAS HILL COUNTRY

This vintage photograph offers a glimpse into Texas history and African American history in the Lone Star state. The image features an African American family posing for the camera while standing in front of their house. I found this photograph in Fredericksburg, Texas. The town is located in the Texas hill country and is very close to Johnson City, Texas, the boyhood home of former President Lyndon Baines Johnson. A tour of the area reveals similar houses still standing today. This photograph was very likely taken in that locale. The family seen in this image is composed of a father and mother, and their two sons. All four family members are dressed in their sunday best clothing and wearing hats. The family’s dog is included in the picture and even their cat makes a cameo appearance as it walks away from the front porch. This is truly an interesting and historic photograph.   (SOLD)

LOVING AFRICAN AMERICAN GRANDMOTHER AND HER TWO ADORABLE GRAND DAUGHTERS

AFR AM FAMILY_0003

This photograph is emotionally moving and it elicits a story that we tell ourselves. Most people will likely see it as a story about a grandmother and her grandchildren. Grandma has a tight loving grasp around the waist of  her youngest granddaughter while the older granddaughter clings to grandma’s shoulder for security. This is a portrait of a tight knit family. The little girls are adorable. They are wearing bows in their hair; and both girls are wearing necklaces. It is difficult to tell for sure, but grandma seems to be containing a smile. The girls however, seem a bit bewildered by their experience of being photographed. Grandma was not living in easy times. At the time of this photograph, slavery had already ended but prejudice and discrimination was prevalent. There is dearth of early photographs of African American individuals and families. This image certainly serves a role in representing African American history. Unfortunately, the photographer and subjects of this image are unidentified.
