PRETTY YOUNG WOMAN IN NORWICH, NEW YORK

This cabinet card photograph features a pretty young woman posing for her portrait at the Hotchkiss studio in Norwich, New York. The subject of this photograph appears to be in her teenage years. She is wearing a particularly large corsage, probably supplied by the photographer. The photographer of this cabinet card is Alston E. Hotchkiss ( c 1846-1907) of Norwich, New York. A. E. Hotchkiss came to Norwich in 1872 at the age of twenty-six. He ran the most popular photo gallery in town and it is reported that he took on the persona of an artistic and cultured gentleman. His wife played a major role in his running the studio, and at one point, he employed at least twenty workers. The Cabinet Card Gallery possesses several photos by this excellent photographer. This cabinet card portrait is in very good condition (see scans).

This vintage photograph captures a young woman dressed for winter in her lamb wool coat and lamb wool hat. Her left hand rests snugly in a muff. The photographer of this photograph is H. E. JENNIE HALL HUTCHINS: PROFILE PORTRAIT OF A PRETTY WOMAN FROM EAU CLAIRE, WISCONSIN

This cabinet card portrait features a pretty young woman named Jennie Hall Hutchins. The identification is made by an inscription on the reverse of the photograph. The inscriber describes her as “Grandpa’s half sister”. Preliminary research did not yield any further information about Miss Hutchins. The photographer of this image is no stranger to the Cabinet Card Gallery. At the time of this writing, the gallery has four other photographs by Frederick Bonell.  In addition to having a studio in Eau Claire (the location where this photograph was taken), he also conducted business in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. One source states that Bonell worked as a photographer between 1879 and 1890. To view other photographs by Bonell,  click on the category “Photographer: Bonell”. PRETTY WOMAN WEARING A CHOKER IN WAYLAND, MICHIGAN

A pretty young woman poses for her portrait at the Philley photographic studio in Wayland, Michigan. She is wearing a frilly dress and a dark choker. She is posed to look away from the photographer and has a somewhat aloof expression. The photographer, Silas Philley (1845- 1926) is listed in “The Directory of Early Michigan Photographers” (2014). He operated in Wayland between 1888 and 1894. Philley was raised in Steuben County, New York. His early jobs included working as a laborer and shoemaker. He began his photography career in Wayland but also worked as a photographer in Kalamazoo  and Bloomingdale, Michigan. For part of his later photography career he worked in a partnership  (Evans & Philley). Philley was married twice. He outlived both of his wives, Thirza (11 years his junior), and Lizzie. In 1920 he was working again with shoes; this time as a shoe repairer. Philley did an excellent job creating this image. The subject is well posed and the close-up perspective enhances the portrait.

PRETTY YOUNG WOMAN IN FOSTORIA, OHIO

This cabinet card features a portrait of a pretty young woman with luminous eyes. She is wearing a rose corsage and a serious expression. Note the photographer’s expert use of light in this photograph. This portrait was taken at the studio of James Ball. He operated his photography business in Fostoria, Ohio. The city of Fostoria is located in the northwestern part of the state. The town was created in 1854. During the end of the nineteenth century, at the time that this photo was taken; the city was the home of over a dozen glass factories. The glass factories concentrated there because of the discovery of natural gas in the area and the easy access to the many railroads that ran through the town. The photographer of this image, James Ball , was born in Ohio in 1843 or 1844. Ball married his wife, Anna, in 1875. He was an active Fostoria photographer between at least 1880 until at least 1903. Ball died in Fostoria, in 1905. This cabinet card portrait is in very good condition (see scans).

PRETTY GOLD MEDALIST FASHIONISTA IN BROMLEY, ENGLAND (1889)

E. Davey Lavender is the photographer of this cabinet card portrait of a pretty well-dressed woman in Bromley, England. Bromley is a suburban town located outside of London, England. The woman in this photograph is is flashing a half smile as she sits beside a newspaper on a table. Edgar Davey Lavender was born in Westminster in 1855  and was married to Harriet Lavender (b 1869). Records indicate he operated his studio in Bromley in 1881 through at least 1891. In 1901 he was located in Grove Park (another suburb of London). Lavender died in 1909. Printed on the cabinet card are a few items of note. First, both the front and back of the photograph are marked (“Gold Medalist 1889”). This likely signifies that Lavender won a gold medal for his work at an exhibition in 1889. This accomplishment is being used as an advertisement. The second noteworthy item is that on the reverse of the photograph his business is referred to as “Portrait and Equestrian Studios”. It is my belief that the term “equestrian studio” means that Lavender had the ability to photograph people on horseback and produce photographic portraits of horses. This cabinet card portrait has excellent clarity and is in very good condition (see scans).

TEENAGE GIRL IN BUFFALO, NEW YORK

This scalloped cabinet card features a slim figured teenage girl. She is wearing a necklace and earrings. The reverse of the photograph has a stamp which identifies the photographer as Thomas Ryerse and lists his address as 31 Emslie Street in Buffalo, New York. YOUNG VICTORIAN WOMAN AND TASSELS IN ROCHESTER, NEW YORK

The photographer of this cabinet card is A. L. Lehnkering located at 87 East Main Street in Rochester, New York. She is wearing a gorgeous dress with rows of ruffles at the bottom. Note her tiny waist, likely courtesy of a corset. She is also wearing jewelry including a band around her wrist and a ring. She looks pensive. She is leaning on a chair with tassels. August L. Lehnkering seems to have occupied a few different addresses on East Main Street. In addition to number 87 (listed on the reverse of this image). he also operated out of 87 and 89 East Main Street, as well as 208 East Main Street. He was working out of 87 East Main in 1879, according to the Rochester Business Directory. He is mentioned in the American Journal of Photography (1891) for being awarded a photographic patent, and also in two photography journals published in 1906 for contributing to a charitable fund. WOMAN FINDS DISILLUSIONMENT IN TRINIDAD, CUBA

This cabinet card portrait of a young to middle aged woman was taken at a photographic studio located in Trinidad, Cuba. She poses next to generic chair and in front of a poorly painted backdrop. She holds a small hand fan. The photographers name, according to a stamp on the reverse of the image, is Tomas Gil Gzalez. The street address of his studio was Calle De Desengano 73. Interestingly, “Desengano” translated to English means disillusionment or disenchantment. Most of us, at some time in our lives, have found our way to Disillusionment Street.  SOLD

PORTRAIT OF A PRETTY WOMAN AND HER SMILE (TINTYPE)

This tintype photograph features a well-dressed and pretty young woman. She appears to be dressed for winter. She is wearing a dark heavy dress and a cape. She looks very pleasant and has a lovely smile. Tintypes were popular in the 1860’s and 1870’s. Over time, they were replaced by Carte de Visites and Cabinet Cards. This lovely tintype portrait measures about  2 1/2″ x 3 3/8″ and is in excellent condition (see scans).    (SOLD)
