PRETTY EDWARDIAN YOUNG WOMAN AND HER WHIMSICAL HAT

This vintage real photo postcard features a beautiful young woman and her whimsical hat. She is looking over her shoulder and looking coyly at the photographer. The postcard was published by Paul Finkenrath, the Berlin postcard publishing and printing business. It is part of a series. (no. 1018). The Paul Finkenroth company made quality photo postcards and the company was heavily oriented toward export. They were known to be responsive to printing postcards that they’re customers desired over time. They were quite profitable but closed in 1911 when protective tariffs interfered with their business. The company was established by Paul Finkenrath and Paul Grasnick in 1897. The partnership lasted about a year and then Grasnick left to start his own lithography studio. The postmark on this postcard indicates that it was stamped in Kortrijk, a Belgian city in the Flemish province of West Flanders. It was postmarked in 1916 and has a Belgian stamp.

PRETTY COWGIRL AT MURDOCH’S BATH HOUSE IN GALVESTON, TEXAS

Louis Tobler was a photographer at Murdoch’s Bath House in Galveston, Texas. This vintage real photo postcard is an example of his work. The young woman in this photograph came to his studio and decided to wear a costume. She dressed as a cowgirl and she used many of the props offered to her by the photographer. Note her wooly chaps, gunbelt, holster, gun, bandana, and cowpoke hat. It appears that she is wearing regular shoes rather than boots. The cow girl in this portrait appears to be having a great time being photographed. She is flashing a wonderful smile. The AZO stamp box seen on the reverse of the postcard indicates that the photograph was taken sometime between 1924 and 1949. Murdoch’s Bathhouse played an important part in Galveston’s history. It was originally built in the late 1800’s, and for some reason, wood building was built on the beach. A storm destroyed the bathhouse in 1900. The Bathhouse was reconstructed in 1901 but was destroyed in the storms of 1909,1915, 1961, and 2008. Murdoch’s rented bathing suits and provided showers for beachgoers. When the bathhouse reopened in 1910, it had 542 rooms and a gift shop. The store sold souvenirs, shells, and other hazarai. The bathhouse also had a restaurant named Gaido’s Seafood. Having lived in Houston during the 1980’s and 1990’s, I ate at the restaurant many times and it was considered a Galveston institution. The restaurant remains in business today. The photographer of this postcard portrait, Louis Tobler (1866-1944), was born in Russia and immigrated to the United States in 1879. This portrait postcard is in very good condition (see scans).

PORTRAIT OF A BESPECTALED WOMAN WEARING A FINE HAT IN LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS

This cabinet card portrait features a well dressed woman wearing a spectacular hat and spectacles. Her glasses are modern versus old school. They have temples and are not the pince niz variety of eyewear. The woman in this image appears quite serious. The photographer of this photograph is Napleon J. Loupret. His studio was at 51  Central Street, in Lowell, Massachusetts. According to an online researcher, Loupret occupied this building from 1885 until 1893. City directories indicate that he worked as a photographer in Lowell between 1880 and 1911. The 1913 directory reveals that Loupret was working as a watchman. Mr. Loupret was born in Canada in 1858 and moved to the United States around 1880. He married Frances H. Hevy in 1883. Interestingly, Loupret , at one point in his career, was partners in a studio called Hevy & Loupret. It is likely that Louis N. Hevy was Loupret’s father-in-law or brother-in-law. Napoleon Loupret died in 1925. A portrait of the Loupret family can be seen below. I believe that Napoleon is the young man sitting on a chair in the back row. PORTRAIT OF “MISS DIX” IN ROCHESTER, NEW YORK (CIVIL WAR VETERAN PHOTOGRAPHER)

A young woman poses for her photograph at the Gregg Studio in Rochester, New York. She is wearing flowers pinned to her dress, as well as earrings and a nice smile. An inscription on the reverse of this cabinet card photograph reveals that the subject is named “Miss Dix”. The photographer of this image is Sherman Gregg (1838-1891). He is listed as a photographer in the 1865 New York State Census. The year before, (1864), he entered and left the Union Army. During the Civil War he served as a First Lieutenant in the 3rd Regiment, of the New York Cavalry. He is cited in the Photographic Times and American Photographer (1884). Gregg was listed in Rochester Directories as a photographer until 1890. He died in 1891 and is buried in Rochester’s Mt. Hope Cemetery.

PRETTY YOUNG WOMAN IN A WHITE LACE DRESS IN FREEPORT, ILLINOIS

This photograph features a pretty woman wearing a very fancy white lace dress. Hopefully, some of the cabinet card visitors with fashion interest and expertise will make some informative comments about this fashionable woman’s attire. The woman’s hairstyle is interesting. She is wearing her hair up and its in a puffy, but neat, pile. This photograph was produced by the Wilkins studio in Freeport, Illinois. Charles E. Wilkins was born in 1859 in Red Wing, Minnesota. He lived in Freeport for forty-two years and operated his photography studio there for twenty-five years. His studio was located at 123 Stephenson Street for an unknown number of years. He retired about 15 years before his death.  At age seventy-two he took up golf and “played a remarkable game” according to his obituary which appeared in the Freeport Journal Standard (1940). SOLD

PRETTY TEENAGE GIRL IN THE DARK IN MIDDLETOWN, CONNECTICUT

This cabinet card portrait features  a pretty teenage girl posing at the Hennigar studio in Middletown, Connecticut. She is well dressed and is adorned with flowers. She is wearing a ring and holding a feathered fan. This photograph presents a sharp image of the young lady and the dark background contributes to that sharpness. The photographer directory “Langdon Road” lists a number of photographers with the name “Hennigar” that worked in the Middletown area. There was a Hennigar studio in Lambertsville, New Jersey in the 1870’s. A studio called “Hennigar Brothers” operated in Middletown from at least 1892 through 1901. Who were the principals of Hennigar Brothers studio? The answer is unclear but this is what is known. George Wainwright Hennigar  (1832-1910) was a photographer in Middletown in the 1860’s and 1870’s and is listed as a photographer there in the 1900 census. The New York Public Library has a stereo card photograph by George in it’s collection  The photo captures a damaged steam ship after a collision with a bridge. John W. Hennigar was located in Lambertsville before moving his business to New Rochelle, New York. He was listed in the New York City directories of  1867 and 1868. Morton W. Hennigar (1855-1927) had a studio in Middletown between 1877 and 1909. Charles L. Hennigar (1842-1897) was a photographer in Middletown from at least 1868 through 1872. In 1876 he is listed in the Brooklyn, New York directory as a photographer. The 1880 US census reports that he was a photographer in New York City. It is likely that George W. Hennigar is the photographer that took this photograph. He was present in Middletown around the time that this photograph was taken (1880’s or 1890’s).   SOLD

This oval image features a very pretty well dressed young woman. She is wearing a necklace and a locket pinned to her dress. The woman’s hair is up and topped with a bow. The photograph measures 4″ x 6″. The identity of the photographer and the subject are unknown.   SOLD

PORTRAIT OF A WOMAN WEARING AN UNUSUAL HAT

This vintage real photo postcard features a woman wearing an unusual hat. I am thinking that the millinery designer of this hat designed it in the fog of a bad hangover, or perhaps the woman in the photograph wore the hat into the woods and exited with a branch stuck through her hat. In addition, the branch appears to be hosting one leaf and a caterpillar tent. The subject of this photograph is wearing a winter coat and a nice pursed smile. The AZO stamp box on the reverse of the postcard indicates that it was produced sometime between 1904 and 1918.  The identity of the hatted woman and the studio that took the photograph are unknown.  SOLD

CHARMING YOUNG WOMAN AT AN OPEN GATE IN JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK

A charming and pretty young woman stands at an open gate as she poses for this cabinet card portrait. The woman is beautifully dressed and well adorned with bracelets, a feathered hat, and a parasol. The photographer of this image is A. N. Camp of Jamestown, New York. He began his photography business there in 1885.
