This wonderful vintage real photo postcard (Postcard 1) captures actor Mr. Charles Garry and actress Dora Barton (1880-1966) in a dramatic scene from the play “Ivanhoe”. Ivanhoe was a dramatization by William Palmer of Walter Scott’s novel.Dora Barton plays Rebecca while Charles Garry plays the role of Isaac of York. Both actors later had film careers. This photograph does an incredible job of capturing the performers emotions. The photographer of this image was well known for his talent and family ties. Alexander Percy Guttenberg (1870-?) came from a family that produced a number of photographers. His father, Marcus Guttenberg (1828-1891) began as a daguerreotypist in Hungary, Prussia, Poland and Germany before starting a photography business in England (1851). One source reports that he established 24 studios in England but settled in the Manchester area. Percy, like his father, was also very successful. In fact, there are fourteen of his photographs in England’s National Portrait Gallery. Percy was famous for his work photographing actors and actresses. The image above was photographed at his Queen’s Theater studio in Manchester as part of a “Revival Series”. The postcard has been mailed and is postmarked in Sunderland in the year 1909. Sunderland is in the northeast of England.

Postcard 2 features a portrait of Dora Barton. Barton, an English actress, appeared in films between 1916 and 1938. Her mother and her sister were also actresses. The IMDb reports that Barton appeared in 12 films. She also appeared in a Broadway show in 1902. This postcard was published by Rotary Photo as part of a series (No.1654C). Barton’s photo portrait was done by Alexander Bassano. Bassano (1829 –1913) was a leading royal and high society photographer in Victorian London. The postcard has a 1904 postmark.  (SOLD)

Marcella Albani (1899-1959) was an Italian film actress that appeared in 50 films between 1919 and 1936. Albani was “discovered” by writer/director Guido Parish (Schamberg) when she was twenty years old. They became a very successful film couple until 1924 when they parted ways. Their movies were predominately tear jerkers and adventure stories. The actress also worked with other famous directors such as Joe May, Friedrich Zelnik, and Wilhelm Dieterle. Albani was a major star in the European cinema in the late 1920’s. Her films were made in five different European countries. Many of Albani’s roles were portraying elegant Latin beauties. At the advent of sound movies, Miss Albani turned to writing. One of her several novels was turned into a movie. She continued to act until 1936. Albani was married to director Mario Franchini in 1931.

Albani certainly looks elegant, sensual, and beautiful in this Postcard 1 portrait. She is dressed exquisitely. The postcard image is a bit risque for it’s era. This postcard was published by Ross Verlag of Berlin, Germany. The postcard is part of a series (no. 538/1). This portrait of Miss Albani was taken by celebrity photographer, Alexander Binder.   (SOLD)

In the photograph seen on Postcard 2, Albani again looks elegant, and beautiful. Her hat is a fashion statement in itself. The card is of German origin and published by Ross Verlag of Berlin. The postcard is part of a series (no. 1521/1). The photo is by Aafa film. According to one reliable source, the postcard was issued sometime between 1927 and 1928.  (SOLD)

Postcard 3 features a beautiful risque portrait of Miss Albani. The publisher of this postcard is also Ross Verlag of Berlin, Germany. The postcard is part of a series (no. 596/3). Printed on the postcard is the name “Albani Film”. The company was a film production and distribution firm and was active in 1934.  (SOLD)

Postcard 4 accentuates the beauty of Miss Albani. The portrait is artistic and risque. This postcard was published by Ross Verlag as part of a series (no.596/4). Print in the bottom right hand corner of the image states “Albani Film”.  (SOLD)

MORMON METEOR & AB JENKINS : EARLY INDIANAPOLIS 500 ; CHARLES BELL : TOWER : (1946)

This vintage photograph (lithograph) features a look at racecar driver, AB Jenkins and the Mormon Meteor. In the 1930’s, Ab Jenkins built three successive versions of the Mormon Meteor. The cars were built to break land speed records. Jenkins worked in conjunction with August Duesenberg to build the car. The automobile was powered by a modified Curtis Aircraft engine. Jenkins began breaking speed records in 1936. In 1937, he set a 24 hour record with an average of 157 mph. Interestingly, Ab Jenkins went on to become the Mayor of Salt Lake City (1940-1944). PRETTY LITTLE GIRL IN MIDDLETOWN, NEW YORK : FASHION : CABINET CARD

This cabinet card portrait features a full portrait of an adorable little girl. She is standing on a chair and appears a bit dubious about the experience of being photographed. She is smartly dressed. The photographer of this image is H. Osterhaus and the retoucher is R. B. Weeks. The photograph was taken at Osterhaus’s studio in Middletown, New York. (SOLD)

COMTESSE DE NOAILLES : POET, NOVELIST, FEMINIST : ALFRED NOYER : PHOTO BY HENRI MANUEL : RPPC

This vintage real photo postcard features Comtesse Mathieu de Noailles (1876-1933). She was a Romanian French writer, poet, and socialist feminist. Her birth name was “Princess Anna Elixabeth Bibesco-Bassaraba de Brancovan”. Her father was a prince and her Greek mother was a musician. In 1897 she married the son of the 7th Duke de Noailles. The pair became very popular in Parisian high society. Anna de Noailles wrote three novels, many collections of poetry, and an autobiography. Her first work was published in 1901. She was a part of the elite group of intellectuals, artists, and authors of her place and time. A New York Times article from 1929 reported that she was one of the finest poets in France. Anna was a very popular woman and a number of great artists painted her portrait. Auguste Rodin sculped her image in 1906 and the sculpted bust resides in the Metropolitan Art Museum in New York City. Anna won many literary awards during her career. This postcard was published by Alfred Noyer. Anna’s photo portrait was taken by the esteemed photographer, Henri Manuel (1874-1947). Manuel opened a portrait studio in Paris in 1900. Manuel specialized in portraits and photographed many celebrities from the world of sports, theater, art, and politics. He was also the official photographer of the French government for 30 years. This postcard was produced in France.  Note the light blue mark near the top right hand corner of the card. The postcard is in overall Good Condition (see scans). The photograph seen on this postcard was used as a cover photo for a biography of Anna Noailles. This particular photo is uncommon or rare.

FRATERNAL ORGANIZATION MEMBER WEARING A LARGE STAR

This cabinet card presents an image of an older man in his fraternal organization garb. Note the large star on his jacket. There is no information on the card to assist in identifying the gentleman in the photograph, nor to identify the photographer and location of  the studio. Perhaps a visitor to the Cabinet Card Gallery can examine the clothing in the image, and identify the particular fraternal organization represented in the photograph. The card stock of this cabinet card is quite thin, making it likely that the photograph was produced in the early years of cabinet card photography (1870’s or early 1880’s).  (SOLD)

NORTHWEST AIRLINES STRATOCRUISERS : WORLD’S FASTEST AND MOST MODERN AIRLINER

This vintage lithographic postcard features a Northwest Airlines Stratocruiser in flight. The stratocruiser, for it’s time was the fastest and most modern airliner. The plane was manufactured by Boeing and was a double-deck plane that held 75 passengers and had spiral stairways, lower deck lounges, and large dressing rooms. The plane was introduced in the late 1940’s. This postcard was issued by the airline.  (SOLD)

YOUNG BOY GIVES SISTER A RIDE ON THE BACK OF HIS TRICYCLE : WATERTOWN, WISCONSIN

This cabinet card image features an adorably dressed little boy giving his little sister a ride on the back of his tricycle. Note the children’s hats and the boy’s high top shoes. There is a wonderful view of the antique trike. John B. May, an Englishman, is the photographer of this portrait. The Wisconsin Photographer’s Index falsely reports that he operated a studio in Watertown (Wisconsin) between 1879 and 1899. In fact, according to his obituary, May ended his photography career in 1891.  After his leaving the business, he supervised the telephone Exchange. He later moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was brought back to Watertown for burial in 1899. (SOLD)

These vintage real photo postcards feature beautiful German film actress Elga Brink. The IMDb reports that she appeared in sixty-nine films between 1922 and 1951. Brink was blonde and slender. She began her career in silent films. She often played supporting roles. She appeared in comedies, science fiction, drama, and even in a sex education film. She was recognized for her roles in “Comedians of Life” (1924), “Love in Intoxication? (1927), and “Marriage in Trouble” (1929).  At some point she was married to director Georg Jacoby. After the second world war she mostly did stage work until her retirement from the entertainment world. She then worked as a clerk in a Hamburg law firm.  

Postcard 1 was  published by NBC as part of a series (No. 7375/6). The stamp box of this postcard has an interesting story. “NBC” (Neue Bromsilber Convention) was a price cartel established in 1909 that continued until the 1930’s. The purpose of the cartel was to ensure that the minimum price charged for postcards was kept at a sufficiently profitable level.This color tinted photo postcard portrait captures the beauty of Elga Brink. She is very expressive in this photograph. She appears quite amused by something. She is bundled up for winter weather.  (SOLD)

Postcard 3 was published by Iris Verlag as part of a series (No. 620). On the bottom right corner of this postcard is the logo for Sascha-Films. The company was the largest Austrian film production company of the silent film and early sound film era. The film company was established in 1910 in Bohemia and in 1912 it moved to Vienna. Sascha remained in business through the 1960’s although it went through many changes of ownership and company names through the decades.   (SOLD)

Postcard 4 was  published by Superfot as part of a series (No. 645/1). The stamp box of this postcard states Fotocolore. This photo postcard portrait captures the beauty of Elga Brink. She is very expressive in this photograph. She has the appearance of a “deer in the headlights”. This close-up portrait is almost too close for comfort. The card is uncommon or rare.  (SOLD)
