This vintage arcade card features a pretty skater who has taken a spill on the ice. She sits on the ice in a risque position. The caption reads “Who Said Beautiful But Numb”. This card was published by Mutoscope in 1945. The back of the card is blank. Here is a little history of arcade cards. They were generally purchased at carnivals and fairs, and boardwalk arcades. They were bought from machines manufactured by Esco. The Exhibit Supply Company was a major producer of arcade cards. This is a classic artist pin-up. The colors are very vivid. SOLD
FRENCH COLONIAL AFRICA : SENEGAL : MANDINGUE ETHNICITY : 2 TOPLESS NATIVE WOMEN
This vintage postcard features two women members of the Mandingues ethnic group. They are topless and wearing native garb and jewelry. The Mandinka are a West African ethnic group numbering about eleven million people. Most live in southern Mali, eastern Guinea, and northern Ivory coast. This postcard is part of a series (no.I117). The women’s photograph was taken by a well known and skilled photographer. Francois-Edmond Fortier (1862-1928) was a French documentary photographer and ethnographer. He published more than 3500 postcards of French West Africa “Afrique Occidentale”. Fortier was based in Dakar, Senegal. This vintage postcard is from the 1920’s. (SOLD)
A TROUBLED WOMAN : NICE BRACELETS : CLEVELAND, OHIO

This original cabinet card photograph features a forlorn looking young woman. She is wearing two lovely bracelets. This image was photographed by Edgar Decker (1832-1905). He was one of Cleveland’s earliest and most renowned photographers. Decker was raised on a farm in New York. He grew up to be a shopkeeper. He developed an interest in photography. When he moved to Cleveland in 1857, he went to work in photography studios. After two years of experience, he opened his own studio, which operated for over 40 years. His subjects included many accomplished people including performers, businessmen, and politicians. In fact, Decker photographed four US Presidents, John James Audubon (ornithologist), as well as General William Sherman. In 1862, he photographed encamped Union army soldiers before they left Cleveland to be engaged in the civil war. Decker won many awards in photography competitions. In 1887, he was elected President of the National Photographic Association. He served on Cleveland’s City Council from 1878 through 1882. Decker was succeeded by his protege, George Edmondson. Edmonson became a successful and well known photographer in his own right. (SOLD)


BESSIE WYNN: ACTED IN “THE WIZARD OF OZ” AND “BABES IN TOYLAND”
This cabinet card features a portrait of stage actress, singer, and comedienne, Bessie Wynn. She appears quite attractive despite her rather bizarre hat. Are those grapes atop her hat? Wynn was famous for her roles in the original cast of Victor Herbert’s “The Wizard of Oz” and “Babes in Toyland”. Wynn introduced the classic song, “Toyland”. She wrote the lyrics for “Toyland” as well as for other songs. She introduced several of Irving Berlin’s songs. Wynn was a showgirl in “The Little Duchess” company that featured Anna Held. Bessie Wynn played a number of “trouser roles”. These roles were defined as roles in which a female actress played a man in men’s clothing. Wynn acted in nine Broadway shows between 1900 and 1912. The photographer of this image was James Samuel Windeatt (1861-1944). The English census (1881) found Windeatt living in Callington, Cornwall and residing with his parents and older sister. His occupation at that time was working as a photographer. The next year he emigrated to the United States and worked as a photographer in Chicago, Illinois. He was a partner in the studio of Gehrig & Windeatt and later operated his own studio. He married his wife, Augusta, in 1888. Census data indicates that he had three daughters (Blanche, Charlotte, and Dorothy). SOLD

This vintage real photo postcard features an adorable Jack Russell Terrier sitting on a pillow atop a table. The dog looks alert and ready for action. The terrier is wearing a wide collar with an attatched dog tag. The photographer did an excellent job of posing and shooting the photograph of this expressive canine. The photographer of this image was located in Paris, France. The name of the studio is embossed on the bottom right hand corner of the card. (SOLD)
PORTRAIT OF BEAUTIFUL STAGE ACTRESS NINA SEVENING (RPPC)
This postcard features a portrait of beautiful English stage actress Nina Sevening (1885-1958). Miss Sevening began her stage career as a child in 1894. She became a major theater actress, singer, and light comedienne. Some of her credits include “Three Little Maids” (1903), “The Merry Widow” (1907), and Peter Pan (1913).
Postcard 1 was published by Rotary Photo as part of the “Rotary Photographic” series (4096 L). Miss Sevening’s photograph was taken by the Dover Street Studios. The studio was active between circa 1906 and circa 1912. The gallery specialized in taking theatrical portraits and was located in London, England. The card is in excellent condition (see scans).

NANCY ALWYN : PRETTY ACTRESS : UNCOMMON RPPC
This vintage real photo postcard features theater actress, Miss Nancy Alwyn. There not much easily accessible information about this actress. Although her photograph appears in a number of cigarette card series, it is difficult to find another Nancy Alwyn postcard. Alwyn cards are certainly uncommon. The only Alwyn cards on ebay at the moment are this one and another. I am the seller for both of them. Miss Alwyn’s photo portrait was taken by James H. Jamieson. ANDREE MEGARD : FRENCH ACTRESS AND STAGE BEAUTY : PHOTO BY REUTLINGER : RPPC
This vintage real photo postcard features a portrait of French actress and stage beauty, Andree Megard (1869-1952). She was born in France. Her parents were “well-off peasents” . At some point, her parents sent her to an Aunt to work in the aunt’s dry goods store. At fifteen years of age, she ran away to Paris. At first, she worked as an artist model. From 1896 to 1925, she appeared on the Paris stage in such works as Shakespeare and plays directed by her husband, Firmin Gemier. In 1913, while playing in Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac, she had an affair with Rostand. In 1907, she starred in “Anna Karenina”. In 1909, she appeared in a silent film. Megard was viewed as representing the highest echelon of fashion and beauty. She was considered “tall, graceful, and distinguished looking”. The international public monitored her hairstyle, and her costumes very closely. She was the subject of many magazine and newspaper articles. The portrait of Miss Megard seen on this postcard was taken by Leopold Reutlinger’s studio in Paris, France. It is part of a series (no.2268). Reutlinger was a very popular celebrity photographer.
