PRETTY WOMAN TENNIS PLAYER : RED HEAD : GREAT SMILE : P.C. PARIS : RPPC

This vintage postcard features a pretty red headed woman tennis player. She is holding a racquet in one hand and a tennis ball in the other hand. Note her tennis outfit. One would have a hard time guessing that she was wearing a tennis dress, but that was typical tennis fashion during the era that this postcard was published. The message on the postcard is in Spanish and from Pepita to Antonia. The message was written in 1920.  I have made an attempt to translate it. The message appears to state, “everyone wishes you a sea of happiness”. This postcard was published by P.C. Paris and the card is in good condition (see scans).

THREE MEN IN A FAUX PLANE : NOVELTY STUDIO RPPC : BRICKFIELD HILL : AUSTRALIA

This vintage real photo postcard features three affectionate well dressed  men sitting in a faux airplane flying over a painted ocean. This novelty real photo postcard was produced by the Crystal Palace studio which was located in Brickfield Hill, Sydney, Australia. There is an amusing message on this postcard. Harry writes to Lucy and that she should tell Ben to get lots of booze for a planned get-together. He adds “we all like a little draft of whiskey”. He also asks her how she enjoyed her first “motor ride”. In the message, Harry descibes his flight on the pictured “airship” as if it was a real plane.  (SOLD)

PORTRAIT OF AN ATTRACTIVE FASHONABLE COUPLE : WOMAN HOLDS CABINET CARD

This is an interesting cabinet because of the way that this couple is posing for their portrait. It is unusual to see a a woman sitting on the floor while posing for a cabinet card photograph. It is also not typical to see a woman sitting at the feet of a man in cabinet card images. The subjects of this photograph may be married, or perhaps, they are brother and sister.  The couple is nicely dressed and the woman is holding a photograph of a man. The backdrop is high quality.  There is no identifying information about the two individuals in the image or about the photographer. This cabinet card portrait is in excellent condition (see scans).

PORTRAIT OF MOTHER AND SON : FASHION : JOHNSTOWN, NEW YORK

This cabinet card photograph features a portrait of a mother and her son. Neither subject seems to be too happy about being photographed. The pair are wearing some of their finer clothes. Note the boy’s neckwear. Is that a bow tie? This photograph was taken at the Kibbe studio in Johnstown, New York. William H. Kibbe (1846-1910) was born in Johnstown. As a school student he exhibited a great deal of talent via his pen and pencil sketching. He then worked briefly as a paint shop decorator but soon found more satisfying work at the studio of renowned engraver Vistus Balch. While working there he assisted in the production of engravings from drawings by Felix Octavius Carr Darley who was famous for his illustrations appearing in Charles Dickens’ novels. During this time Kibbe became acquainted with Napoleon Sarony’s portraits which contributed to his becoming an apprentice with photographer James F. Ryder. From this apprenticeship, Kibbe learned about every aspect of operating a photography studio and in 1871 he opened his own studio at 123 West Main Street in the “Kibbe building”.  His studio was decorated with his own oil and watercolor paintings and he was often joined there by his wife and son (Arthur Fonclair Kibbe) who would assist him. Kibbe was a major contributor to several photographic journals. This cabinet card portrait has some staining on its reverse. It is in overall good condition (see scans).
