PORTRAIT OF A MOTHER AND THREE DAUGHTERS : WITH LONG LONG HAIR : CABINET CARD

This cabinet card portrait features a family of four posing for their portrait at an unidentified photo studio. Mom is wearing a dark dress with a veil. Is she in mourning? Note the length of the two oldest daughters hair. Their hair is quite long. to say the least. This cabinet card was found in a shop near Bethel, New York. The photo is from the earliest part of the cabinet card era. My hypothesis is that the photo dates back to sometime between the 1860’s and early to mid 1870’s. SOLD

PORTRAIT OF A FAMILY OF SEVEN IN RICHLAND CENTER, WISCONSIN

This cabinet card photograph features a lovely family of seven. Mom did not take long rest periods between each of her five children. The family dressed nicely for their trip to the photographer’s studio. The photographer of this cabinet card was the Hillman studio of Richland Center, Wisconsin.  The 1900 US census reports that William J. Hillman was a 51 year-old photographer, born in New York, and living in Richland Center with his wife Caroline (age 54) and his son Charles B. (age 22). Charles B.Hillman was listed as working as a photographer. The Photographic Times (1907) printed a paper read by Hillman. The paper was entitled ” The Successful Photographer” and the advice given in his presentation was excellent and would  be relevant and helpful to modern day business owners. If Hillman was alive today, he would have been an incredible business consultant. The Bulletin of Photography (1914) contains an announcement that the Hillman studio was sold to Frank Dickson. (SOLD)

PRETTY YOUNG WOMAN RECLINING ON A COUCH AND READING A “FORBIDDEN BOOK” (RISQUE)

This vintage real photo postcard features a pretty young woman reclining on a couch and reading a book. The caption on the card indicates that she is reading a “Forbidden Book”. She is likely reading a racy novel. This postcard is a bit risque for it’s era (c. 1905). This postcard was published by Paul Fink (Germany) as part of a series (No. 5009/3). He was a fine art printer that operated between 1899 and 1905. The stamp box of this postcard has an interesting story. “NBC” (Neue Bromsilber Convention) was a price cartel established in 1909 that continued until the 1930’s. The purpose of the cartel was to ensure that the minimum price charged for postcards was kept at a sufficiently profitable level. (SOLD)
