YOUNG WOMAN : CRIMPED HAIR : BEADED DRESS : CROWN POINT, NEW YORK : CABINET CARD
This cabinet card photograph features a young woman with crimped hair and wearing a beaded dress. She is also wearing a tassel and earrings. The womans photo portrait was taken by E. M. Johnson, who operated a studio in Crown Point, New York. The town of Crown Point is located on the west shore of Lake Champlain. The photographer’s full name was Elbert M. Johnson (1844-1910). He was born in Whiting, Vermont. Sometime before 1850 his family moved to Wadhams Mills (near Westport), New York. Growing up, he worked on his family’s farm. In 1864, during the American Civil War, he enlisted in Company E of the 2nd New York Cavalry Regiment. He was a private. At the war’s end, he returned to Westport and learned the art and business of running a photography studio. He opened his photography studio in Crown Point and was an active member of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR). SOLD

This vintage real photo postcard features two cute siblings. An inscription on the reverse of the card indicates that the children are Susan (age 8) and Richard Carey (age 6). The photograph was taken in 1912. Note that Richard is wearing a sailor suit, a popular style of this era. The card has an Artura stamp box. SOLD
YOUNG GIRL IN TYROLEAN COSTUME WITH MANDOLIN IN BECKENHAM, ENGLAND
This exceptional cabinet card portrait features a young girl wearing a Tyrolean costume and playing a mandolin. She looks absolutely adorable. The photograph comes from photographer F Valery who operated a studio in Beckenham, England. When Frederick Valery went home to his wife and family, he was no longer Frederick Valery. Instead he became James Frederick Lowrie. Apparently, Frederick Valery was Lowrie’s “nom de camera”. Lowrie was born in London in 1853. He was married to Millie (1855-?) and the couple had two sons and one daughter. Lowrie was a photographer from at least 1901 through 1907. The British Journal of Photography (1906) reported the “sudden death” of Mr. Lowrie. He had two studios, one in Beckenham, and the second one in Bromley. The journal states that Lowrie “dropped dead” while photographing a girl in his Bromley studio. He was 53 years old at the time of his death. His cause of death was heart disease. If this image is typical of his work, Lowrie certainly was a gifted photographer. This cabinet card portrait is in very good condition (see scans).

THREE YOUNG CHILDREN POSE FOR THE COLUMBIA VIEW AND BUTTON COMPANY (MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE OR PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA
Three young children pose together for a cabinet card portrait by the Columbia View & Button Company of Memphis, Tennessee and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This photograph precipitates a number of questions. Was this photograph taken outdoors, or is this an in-studio portrait? Was this image produced in Memphis, or, in Pittsburgh? Finally, why is the photographic studio called a “View & Button Company”? Lets attempt to answer the previous questions. It is not clear if this is an indoor, or outdoor photograph; nor is it apparent in which of the studios, the image was produced. However, one source reports that the Pittsburgh studio existed between circa 1893 and 1900. This cabinet card is marked on its front as being photographed in 1901. Does the 1901 date preclude the possibility that the image comes from the Pittsburgh studio? The answer is a resounding no. The date on the card was preprinted and the source is not certain the Pittsburgh studio definitely closed in the exact year 1900. The third question concerns the reason the name of the studio includes the terms “View & Button” . The likely answer is that the studio originally produced stereoviews and photograph buttons. The buttons were generally portraits and varied in size. They could be worn or displayed on a piece of furniture or shelf. Large photographic buttons were most popular between 1900 and 1930. The smaller pinback buttons were popular beginning the 1890’s. There is some other information that may prove to be important in learning more about the image. On the reverse of the cabinet card, there are two names written. These names likely identify two of the subjects in the photograph. The two subjects names are Mary Baker and Guy Baker. Searching census data with a common name like”Baker” was an exercise in frustration, in regard to identifying these probable siblings. After viewing this cabinet card, one notes that the three children in this photograph are not fashionably nor expensively dressed. They are different from most of the children seen in cabinet cards. The majority of children tend to wear their sunday best, which is generally much nicer than these children’s wardrobe. One surmises that these children are not from an affluent family. This cabinet card is in very good condition (see scans).

STREET SCENE : FREDERICKSBURG, VIRGINIA : CLASSIC CARS, W T GRANT, WOOLWORTH’S
This lithographic chrome vintage postcard features a street scene in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The card shows Caroline Street, which according to the caption on the reverse of the postcard, is the town’s major retail street. Judging by the classic cars shown on the postcard; this card is likelky from the 1950’s. Note the signs for Peoples Drug Store, W. T. Grant, and Woolworth’s. Other interesting details seen in this image, include two buses and a parked red car. The car has lettering on it’s door. It is difficult to decipher the words on the door but it appears to me that they state “Official Car”. The postcard was published by Curteichcolor and distributed by Cussons, May & Company (Richmond Virginia). (SOLD)

This vintage photograph features a lovely couple on the occasion of their wedding. Judging by their smiles, they seem very happy on their special day. The young woman is wearing an unusual hair ornament. The photographer of this image is unidentified. The stamp on the reverse of the photograph has the word “Penig”. Most likely, this photograph was taken in Penig, Germany. The residue on the reverse of this photo reveals that it is a former resident of a photo album. Overall, this photograph is in very good condition (see scans).

FOUR FEMALE STUDENTS AND FOUR YOUNG CHILDREN CELEBRATE MAY DAY AT WHITELANDS COLLEGE IN LONDON, ENGLAND
This vintage real photo postcard features four students at Whitelands College, along with four children, celebrating May Day. They are holding a thin rope behind their backs. The previous owner of this postcard described the photo as a photograph of a “daisy chain”. I am not sure of what that means, but I find the individuals in this photo, and the nature of what they are doing, quite intriguing. Whitelands College is located in London and is one of the oldest of all higher education institutions in England. The college is part of the University of Roehampton. The college was founded in 1841 by the Church of England’s National Society. The school was established as a teacher training college for women. It holds the distinction of being England’s first college of higher education to admit women. The school has a long tradition of holding two major annual festivals. One of these is the May Day Festival. Whitelands College held it’s first May Day festival in 1881. The festival is held annually and traditions include electing a “May Queen”. The queens’s “coronation” is presided over by a visiting Anglican Bishop. It is interesting to note that photos reveal that children took part in the coronation ceremony. For example, a young girl would walk behind the queen holding the train of the queen’s gown during the procession. Another tradition at the school is the maypole dance. This postcard was published by J. Russell & Sons. The studio was located in the Crystal Palace. The Crystal Palace was built of cast iron and plate glass. It was constructed in Hyde Park, London and it was the home of the Great Exhibition of 1851. The structure was destroyed by fire in 1936. James Russell & Sons were photographers in England that were active between the 1850’s and 1940’s. The studio has 692 portraits residing in the National Portrait Gallery. This postcard records interesting social history. It is in very good condition (see scans).

YOUNG CRICKET PLAYER HOLDING A CRICKET BAT IN TORONTO, CANADA
This original cabinet card photograph features a boy wearing his cricket uniform and holding a bat. This young athlete is identified on the reverse of the photo as Edwin English. He was photographed by N. Bogart of Toronto, Canada. Most Americans know very little about cricket. Cricket is a “bat and ball” team sport originating in England and played in over 100 countries around the world. Cricket can be traced back to Tudor times in the 16th century. In regard to this photograph, it is interesting to note that the tradition of photographing children in their sport uniforms continues today. Many parents of children participating in sports buy individual and team photographs of their children. Some things don’t change. (SOLD)
